Overrated aging resort - UPDATE

1.0 of 5 bubblesReviewed 19 Jul 2019
*** UPDATE: I stand by my previous comments below because that was our experience as it happened. But, I had the opportunity to chat with Six Senses about our experience. Housekeeping: they said they are working to address the cleanliness of the rooms and trying to be pro-active in understanding guests' needs. Dining: They are looking into lighting solutions at restaurants so guests can enjoy their meals. Amenities: She said the pool and Hilltop Reserve are being refurbished. But, what was not addressed was that the pool would still be closed until 11am which is disappointing as a paying guest. Excursions: they said they will look into being flexible with excursion pricing if a share excursion is not able to be conducted due to a lack of people. OVERALL: it sounds like some progress is being made, but prior to booking I'd recommend you check with Six Senses to see how these items have been implemented and whether this is the right resort for you.

Original post:
Let me premise by saying that we have stayed at Six Senses in the Maldives which was lovely and well worth the expense, but unfortunately I can't say the same for Six Senses Yao Noi.
Room - We were room 47, an ocean pool villa. The room had a great view of the karsts. However, the amount of gecko and animal feces and dead bugs detracted from the view because you weren't able to sit in any of the outdoor areas. We understand this is outdoor eco-friendly resort, but the simple solution is for the cleaning staff to clean up when we go down for meals or are out of the room. We felt the cleaning staff was very poor and not attentive. Another example of the lack of attention, and this may seem petty, but we'd expect the room attendant to figure out that we only wanted cold still water. However, they kept bringing sparking and did not keep it chilled in the refrigerator. There were other little things that you would expect especially paying $1000 a night, something that would set you apart from a Holiday Inn.
Dining - we got the full board meal plan and would not recommend it. If anything do the half board. If you are looking for 5-star food, Six Senses underperforms. One issue we had was a bug and gecko infested dinner at the Living Room. This was due to the table-top light which attracted bugs, which attracted geckos. Again, this is an outdoor eco-friendly resort, but this is a little more than distracting when trying to enjoy your meal. A simple solution is to use more over-head lights, rather than table-top to reduce unwanted dinner guests.
Amenities - one big disappointing item is the fact that the pool does not open until 11am. The common pool has the best views, especially for sunrises, but you'd never know because it is closed. Again, at this price, you'd expect to be able to use these amenities during reasonable hours. Despite the view, the pool, itself, is aging and could use a refresh.
Excursions: We tried to book a shared excursion to Phi Phi Islands, but we were told this was not a possibility because not enough people had signed up and they wanted to force us into their private charter. This is disappointing because you'd expect better customer service, for example possibly a discounted private charter. Instead, we left the resort disappointed because we never saw the Phi Phi Islands and all it needed was some flexibility by Six Senses, which was never offered.
Overall - the views are extraordinary, but that's all this resort has to offer. To put things in perspective, the Princess of Thailand visited Yao Noi while we were there, but she stayed at an adjacent property.

The Six Senses Yao Noi is a spectacular property nestled into a remote cliff side of Yao Noi island - reached by speedboat via Six Senses, 30 minutes off the coast of Phuket. The property is a eco-dream with treehouse style villas and sprawling views overlooking the peaceful sea. Off in the distance you can see the limestone caps of nearby island that look like statues strewn across the emerald sea. The views are remarkable!

The service is outstanding and their personalized touch is second to none. Their barefoot luxury experience in Thailand makes them a category of their own. Each villa is appointed with a guest experience maker to ensure you have the most welcomes stay. They assist with everything from top to bottom during your time and make the experience truly wonderful. Our GEM was Tokyo from Northern Thailand and he was the most kind hearted, funny and helpful young man. We were so delighted is his presence.

The resort is quite intimate with only a limited number of villas. There are 2 beaches on the resort, 2 restaurants and 1 large amenity pool on the hilltop overlooking the view (there are also large plunge pools in each of the villas)

Six Senses practises the utmost sustainability and gives back to the local community of Yao Noi. It is nice to support a hotel chain that has the best intentions in their heart when it comes to their impact on the local and global environments. Their sustainable practices make Six Senses resorts in a league of their own.

There are many daily activities to keep you busy throughout your stay and tours you can easily do off the resort as well. I highly recommend the local tuk tuk tour where you can spend a morning getting to know the island and get the flavour of life in Yao Noi. The island is a small community of very friendly locals. It is also very safe.

My husband and I also visited the nearby islands by long tail boat and it was an incredibly memory experience for us both.

One last note is about their spa. Their spa is wonderful and they offer a tailored wellness journey for the duration of your stay. You can return from vacation with an even healthier mind and body than when you arrived :)

The Six Senses Yao Noi was an unforgettable experience and made for the most memorable stay in Thailand. I can’t wait to go back one day!

We had a wonderful experience at the six senses. The staff are wonderful (ploy was our personalised butler) she was so lovely, warm and welcoming. We did a beautiful yoga class one morning which was lovely. The breakfast was probably the best I've been to... like 10/10. The accommodation was next level, so beautiful. I wouldn't hesitate to stay here again, it's obviously expensive but you really do feel like you get your value for money.

We stayed here as a family of three (two adults and our five year old son) for four nights in a hideaway pool villa in mid April. Having stayed at the Six Senses Laamu previously we had high expectations and were not disappointed.

Our GEM, Oui looked after us for the duration of our stay and was excellent, always available to help or organise if required.

Our hideaway villa was set in the jungle and whilst not benefiting from the stunning views of the Ocean facing villas it was spacious indoors and out, modern in a rustic sense, private, perfect for relaxation and provided an opportunity to spot some of the local wildlife.

As many other reviews mention the views from the infinity pool and restaurant at the Hilltop are stunning.

We mainly ate at The Living Room and Hilltop restaurants and all the food was excellent with a good menu for kids. The free ice cream a delicious bonus!!

There are lots of activities to keep children entertained and the hotel organised an Easter Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday. The kids movie at the cinema on the beach enabled my wife and I to have a quiet drink at The Den, whilst our son was entertained for 90 minutes. In summary this is a very family friendly hotel.

We booked a day trip to Phi Phi Islands, which I would highly recommend. We went out on a boat for approximately six hours during which we visited to some great snorkeling spots that were relatively quiet in addition to visiting some of the more well known lagoons that sadly were not as quiet but still a great experience.

If I had to come up with something negative, then I would say that if you're a beach lover and want to sit on a beautiful beach everyday, this might not be the place for you but the fact that the beach is not the greatest really didn't bother us.

If you want to go somewhere and relax and switch off in luxury for me this is the perfect hotel.
