“Great Park”
Reviewed 4 December 2011

Sundrum Castle is a lovely park in a great location, it is convenient for Ayr town centre and beach and there is a supermarket close by. The swimming pool is good and the on site restaurant is excellent, good food and very good value. The staff were very good and nothing was too much trouble for them.

My wife and 6 year old son stayed here during the school holidays in October. My son loves it here because of the various activities. He adores the swimming pool or rather the slide; and looks forward to the nightly entertainment for the kids - the kids reps have changed since our last stay 2 years ago but they all had boundless energy and are brilliant with the kids.

The accommodation is spacious and of a high standard, clean and tidy which is all you can ask for really. The tv channels are in need of upgrading esp. for the dad's that want sky sports!

We stayed at the end of the season so hopefully some of the attractions will be tidied up for the start of next year. For example in the games room the pool tables were both damaged and some of the cues damaged - not so much the owner's fault but rather the people staying here should take better care of the equipment!

The football / basketball was tired. It is meant to be all weather but after a day's rain it could not be used for the rest of our stay as it was squelching and mud etc. had strayed in making it messy as well as wet. The fencing was in need of repair as well.

The restaurant was surprisingly good. I expected basic but it is definitely better than that. I am coeliac and so have a gluten intolerance and they were able to accomodate my dietary requirements ok.

Overall, despite some signs of tiredness this was a very enjoyable break and we will return again

Iain

We are a family of 5,we have 3 daughters 3 /7/11 and always book a 3 bedroom caravan
my mum and I go in October with the 3 girls for a cheeky caravan holiday which we always love. we travel by boat and train every year from Dunoon,

we enjoy the peaceful setting close to Ayr’s popular beaches and the beautiful Ayrshire coastline,
Sundrum Castle offers us the best of both worlds a fun filled family holiday or a quiet, relaxing break taken at your own pace.
Among a host of facilities to suit all ages and tastes are a superb indoor pool complex,
crazy golf, an adventure playground and the fabulous children’s clubs.
The Tam O’Shanter bar and restaurant offers the perfect way to round off your day before taking in the fantastic family entertainment.

we have been to Sundrum Castle Holiday Park 6 times over the past few years.

we always go Monday to Friday
ive stayed in 2 types of caravans

You really do benefit from a car when visiting this site,

it’s about 4 miles from the centre of Ayr and can be costly using taxi’s (Approx £10 each way), The site is aproximately 4 miles from Ayr and as a previous reviewer mentioned, if you don't drive, then travelling to and forth can be costly. we only went into Ayr on a Wednesday so wasn't to bad

There is a local bus service from the main road ( 10/ 15 min walk?) but there is a bus service (which is often a taxi but is ran as a bus servic) from the site itself. This runs from the site at 10am and 12 noon each day (£2.40 per person) and the return service is 2.15pm and 4.15pm..we found taxi was better for us

The site is nice and safe for children to play and people to walk around. There are three main clusters of caravans, then a central grassed area used for tents and then a small touring caravan site. The touring caravan site had hard standings and power points and there was a small toilet block and laundry which was clean.

The whole place felt well run, the staff were very helpful and polite and I felt secure enough during my time there to allow my children to have a bit of a roam by themselves.

Tam O'Shanter

there’s plenty of choice from the Lets Eat menu at the Tam O’Shanter Restaurant.
From healthy options to delicious snacks and hearty meals, you’ll be spoiled for choice.
we had great meals and we ate out in there every night. Great food and great prices, one of the most reasonable eating areas ,

There is a chip shop / takeaway on site too, but we never tried it.

the soft play area was great for the little one as we could sit under patio heaters & watch her play & my older girls made friends & was able to amuse them self at the amusements,

There is a laundry with 2 washing machines and 2 driers, which was handy as we were staying for a week. There machines cost £3.50 - £4.50 for a wash (they have different sized drums) and the driers cost £1 for 15 minutes, so it cost us about £10 for our 2 loads of washing.

The shop is handy for essentials, but if you're staying for more than a few days you'd be better off going to Ayr for your shopping,

If you're taking young kids, I can recommend some local attractions: Heads of Ayr Farm Park (only a few miles away) is great for a family day out (it cost us £30 for the family), but go early to make sure you can get around everything.great day out

There is an amusements area, with the usual slot machines and video games, pool tables, and a nice little mini ten-pin bowling game, which the kids loved, costing £2 per game.

the pool was lovely my kids had a ball at it but it was very cold , was of an adequate size with flume Emily and Sophie loved it,small pool for smaller children which did my 3 year old grand as she hates water at the best of times but she loved this pool .

when we were there
For the kids there's entertainment with Maxi Million and his friends from Treetops Grove.
join Maxi and his friends for fun and adventure down at Treetops Grove and enjoy:
arts & crafts competitions team games singing & dancing treasure hunts maxi shows

There is also an entertainments room, but although we got a leaflet which had lots of events for kids and adults on it,

this did mean it was peaceful.love going back time and time again x

My partner and i visited Sundrum Castle in August for a fortnight and booked a Belle Isle caravan (with 3 beds and extra space) as we were staying for 2 weeks. After an 8 hour drive from our home in the West Midlands, they let us have the caravan early as it was cleaned ready.

The site is a long way out of Coylton village and is nearer to Ayr, but is in some stunning countryside and is clearly signed (brown signs) from the main A70 but note it is a sharp turn to the castle drive from the fast main road.

The Belle Isle caravan was extremely spacious and spotlessly clean. It was new last year and was in good condition (aside from a couple of minor repairs to the back door and toilet seat). It had a good sized lounge/diner, a kitchen with microwave and fridge freezer and 3 good bedrooms. It was very luxurious and had a cd player/radio, heated towel rail in bathroom, Even in August the central heating and insulation came in very welcome.

The parking was at the front of the van and was fine for one car. Our neighbours had 2 cars and parking was a problem for them, as you cannot park between vans. The grass is kept for people to sit out or for kids to play and the “No Parking” is strictly enforced.

The site is nice and safe for children to play and people to walk around. There are three main clusters of caravans, then a central grassed area used for tents and then a small touring caravan site. The touring caravan site had hard standings and power points and there was a small toilet block and laundry which was clean. There are some nice walks in the country lanes up towards the castle (private property) and down towards the A70 with some inquisitive cows!!!

The entertainment complex at Sundrum is at the entrance of the site (almost in the centre of the site). The complex has an arcade, pool hall, club room with entertainment and a pub and restaurant (Tam o Shanter Bar). The centre is well used, especially as there is no nearby pub as Coylton is a long walk or car drive away. The site is in the middle of nowhere! The prices were a bit steep in the bar, with a coffee and a wine being around £6! And also, there is no near cash machine, so make sure you get cash whilst out and about.

There is a superb Costcutter supermarket, which is well stocked and the shopkeepers were really pleasant. It had a good range of souvenirs and hot bread and cakes too. For a big shop, Tesco and Morrisons are both in Ayr and within 10-15 minutes of the site.

The site is in a pretty part of the world and we found much to do, from getting the train to Glasgow from Ayr (about £6), having walks and fish and chips in Troon, Largs, seeing many castles and historic sites, seeing the Robert Burns Museum in Alloway (A must), Culzean Castle (Gorgeous) and Heads of Ayr Farm Park and going from Ardrossan to the lovely island of Arran. The reception has lots of leaflets on attractions in the area. A sat nav is worth taking on a trip to Sundrum!!!

We would certainly return and is a great base to explore this west coast of Scotland, with a day to Dumfries and Solway coast not beyond possibility. Enjoy it, it’s a great site for families, couples and anyone wanting a relaxing or active break!!! Hope our review and photos help.

Room Tip: The Belle Isle caravan is very spacious and ideal for couples for a long stay as we did or for famil...

Stayed for a weekend. Caravan was really spacious. Everything was new and the place was spotless. Actual site is well maintained and pretty. Had a takeaway on Friday something I don't very often do-the food was pretty reasonable and the ladies in the takeaway were very pleasant and accomodating. Checked in at the bar with a charming young blond barman .

Quiet at night so had a good sleep-I hate having my sleep disturbed. Good Football area for boys to go off and have a kick around -usually someone playing 10 am-10pm.

The swimming pool was clean and pleasant with a nice slide. There are sessions which are a bit of a faff and you can only get in within 15 mins of the start of a session so you have to time it right.

Ayr town has really been done up and the sea front is well kept. There is an excellent playpark with some really innovative play equipment.

The Burns Museum is nice to stop in and vsist the garden and have cake and coffee -you don't need to pay for the museum .

FREE wifi in bar-very much needed with teenagers!

Plenty to do, nice shops , excellent park and amazing Caravans .

Room Tip: p139 is pretty nice.

Just returned from our 4th visit and once again had a fantastic time. Clean, small, friendly park with everything you need. We stayed in a Roxburgh caravan this year which was very spacious but an older caravan so looking a bit tired now. The whole family always have a great time and the children are already asking when we can go back. Had 2 lovely meals in the restaurant and not overly priced and the bar prices for drink are very reasonable too. Stayed at other Parkdean sites and have always found them to be spotless and good value for money. Will definitely be back next year.
