“Amazing views-blissfully peaceful”
Reviewed 31 May 2017 for a stay in May 2017

We enjoyed four perfectly quiet days here with the best views we have ever had from a holiday cottage and an ideal base from which to explore the Beara peninsula and surrounding area. Colette was an attentive but not intrusive host and able to advise on where to go and where to eat. The only slight downside was the 4'6" bed when we are used to a kingsize; that said, the views, silence and scenery were wonderful and just what we needed for a quiet getaway.

“Fantastic cottage with views”
Reviewed 9 May 2017 for a stay in April 2017

Great cottage with amazing views overlooking the sea with hills of ring of Kerry beyond . Spacious accommodation with clean and modern facilities and traditional features provide a great base for exploring the surrounding areas. Lots to do within a short drive, including great walks, restaurants and points of interest.

Colette (the owner) was great and supplied eggs from her hens and homemade jam as well as lots of good information for things to do. We made friends (and with her dogs too)! Would definitely recommend.

“Perfect base for exploring the Beara Pensinsula”
Reviewed 5 October 2016 for a stay in September 2016

This spacious and well-equipped cottage provides the ideal base for exploring the Beara Pensinsula and, for those wishing to drive further, the adjacent parts of counties Cork and Kerry. The view over the Kenmare River to the Kerry mountains beyond is stunning. In a week's stay we never left the peninsula, finding sufficient interest in Allihies, Castletownbere and Gleninchaquin amongst other places. We were warmly welcomed by Colette and her three dogs and, given the opportunity, would have no hesitation in returning.

“Outstanding accommodation, beautiful location, warm welcome”
Reviewed 16 August 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We stayed here for a week and enjoyed it so much. I usually hate staying near to the owner of a cottage rental, however Colette is so warm, interesting and respectful of your space that this was not an issue. We spent two lovely evenings with Colette, she is a very open person who has the ability to get on with anyone. However I also sensed that she would be as involved with guests as much or as little as they wanted. Colette also has real knowledge of the area and is able to give lots of tips and advice, including where to pick delicious chanterelle (in season). The house itself is idyllic - with amazing views from every window. The peninsula is fantastic for walking and is stunning - with much less tourism than the Dingle or Inveragh. I would certainly recommend this rental, we felt really at home in this magical place.

“Delightful holiday cottage, spectacular location and a warm welcome!”

We had a blissful and relaxing stay at Hill Top Cottage. The views from the cottage are spell-binding and the peace and quiet just what we wanted. Colette was charming and helpful and I loved meeting her menagerie of animals. The cottage is beautifully decorated throughout, cosy and well equipped - I enjoyed all the books and eating out on the patio overlooking the bay. The bay is a 'stone's throw' from the cottage and we enjoyed beach combing there and taking photos of the spectacular scenery. There's plenty to see and do along the coast and we particularly enjoyed the walks at GlenInchaquin Park, watching the waves at Dursey Point and the colourful array of houses at Eyeries.

“Lovely appealing house with fantastic views”

Hilltop Cottage in Collorus is one of the very best holiday rentals we've ever had. We'd a great week there in 2014 and were delighted to return. It's located on the Beara Peninsula in the southwest of Ireland on the Wild Atlantic Way, and has fantastic views across the bay to an ever-changing panorama of the mountains and headlands of the Iveragh Peninsula, where the famous Ring of Kerry is. On this occasion, the weather didn't give us much opportunity to sit out on the patio and gaze at the views but we knew they were there! And there was plenty else to enjoy in the house and in the area.

The house is genuinely old (quite unusual for rentals on Ireland's west coast - too many carbon copy bungalows) and has been wonderfully renovated in a way that makes it spacious and comfortable and yet showing its thick walls and other traditional features. It's full of interesting pictures and objects to look at along with cosy rugs and cheerful colours - so it's not a sleek or luxurious style, instead it's the kind of house that you know is genuinely loved and lived in.

Hilltop Cottage is incredibly quiet and peaceful: it's away from roads, traffic and towns, so the sounds to be heard are the birds, the wind in the trees and occasionally Colette's dogs. There are no shops, pubs or restaurants within walking distance but the house is so comfortable and well-equipped that we were very happy to eat there most evenings. It's about 20 minutes drive to Josie's lovely restaurant in Glanmore; a similar distance to the great Eyeries Bistro, and to O'Sullivan's pub and seafood bar in Kilmackillogue; and maybe half an hour to both Kenmare and to Castletownbere. So plenty of options - but visitors to Ireland should be aware that the roads are quite narrow and twisty in places!

As so many other reviewers have said, Colette is wonderfully welcoming and generous, and we enjoyed her tasty offers of eggs, potatoes and herbs, as well as conversations on life and culture in Beara and her travels elsewhere - but as noted in a previous review, she's also very good at allowing guests to enjoy our own company too.

Beara is still uncrowded and off the beaten tourist track, and at the same time has lots to do for anyone interested in hillwalking, garden visits, art galleries, archaeology, food, pubs, islands and much else. We had fantastic - and quite easy for anyone who's fairly fit - walks on the Beara Way nearby from Drung Hill to Cashelkeelty, on Knockatee, on the Rábach Way in a remote valley, along the Eyeries coastline, towards Crow Head south of Allihies and near the Dzochen Beara Buddhist Centre. There's a beautiful small beach for swimming at Garinish south of Allihies; there are incredible rock shapes and formations on the mountains; the views from the Healy Pass never fail to elicit gasps; there are several good pubs in the area including the justly famous McCarthy's Bar in Castletownbere; the new Beara Gallery only five minutes from Hilltop Cottage has interesting and affordable art for sale or simply for viewing, with a great welcome and lively chat from Sue; and the Garra Fadó garden and plant centre near Eyeries is another lovely and welcoming attraction.

We're delighted to have stayed at Hilltop Cottage again and hope this recommendation will encourage more guests to enjoy it as much as we did.
