This cool ground-floor suite with its lovely grapevine-covered private garden was just great for our stay in the heat of July. The building is medieval but decor is very contemporary. Owner Anne gave us some really good tips on where to eat and what to see. We made full use of the garden, eating an al fresco breakfast every morning before exploring the pretty town and the area around (you’re no distance here from the wine producing areas of southern Chianti). Having a kitchenette meant we could explore fantastic local produce. I’d really recommend this as an very comfortable and stylish base for getting to know a fascinating bit of Italy.
We felt very privileged to be one of the first guests in this beautifully restored town house which is hidden away in a back alley in the medieval hilltop town of Città della Pieve. The exterior is medieval, the interior is spacious, light, contemporary, with every detail carefully thought through, pared-down luxury at its very best. This is perhaps not surprising as the proprietor, Anne, is (among other things) a travel writer who knows a thing or two about what really matters to the independent traveller. Thus there is fast and reliable wi-fi, brilliantly comfortable beds, crisp white linen, luxurious bathrooms with monsoon-like showers, generous towels, power points aplenty. Our room was provided with a kettle/fridge/coffee maker etc (and will apparently soon have a mini-kitchen) although we didn’t eat in much, preferring to explore the town’s many cafés and restaurants, all within a few minutes walk. Anne helpfully provided us with a ton of local information (she knows the area backwards), directing us to (among other things) a concert in the town’s very own opera house, an olive oil festival and the local terme where we spent an afternoon wallowing in hot water. We stayed in the garden suite which must be particularly gorgeous in summer with its vine-covered terrace, aromatic border and mesmeric views over the Umbrian hills while our friends stayed at the top of the house, their bed rather romantically set on a platform, under the eaves. As you can probably tell, all four of us were utterly charmed, by the town, by the house and by its proprietor … We will be back soon!
