Our BnB host recommended this to us and we were not disappointed. A beautiful place that combines history and art. Some astonishing artifacts and world class pieces of art. Do not miss if you are nearby.

This is how to do it. A provincial town with a coal mining history now hosts an extremely effective outpost of the biggest museum in the world.
You approach the building by way of a long path and are faced with a silver building which inside is light, spacious, uncluttered and welcoming. The museum is arranged as a cultural timeline and although the collection is not large it is superbly displayed and encourages you to take your time over its treasures. The aim is to change the collection at regular intervals which certainly has encouraged us to visit it again. Currently there are some astounding pieces and paintings on view.
Special exhibitions are also there and there is a pleasant cafe too.
A lovely experience.

If you can’t make it to Paris to see the original, this small museum in northern France is well worth a visit. The permanent collection features a variety of pieces spanning different cultures and different eras. Kids will love the audio guide that has them participating in a scavenger hunt through time.

Went to visit the Loyvre-Lens museum after hearing many local people speak highly of it. I can understand that if you live locally and do not have access to other museums this must be a great place to visit.

However...

It really isn't worth the visit unless you're stuck locally with nothing to do. The permanent exhibit is one large hall with a couple of hundred items spanning ancient Egypt to 19th century works of art. There is little if no explanations apart from some tour guides and limited audio guides.

The architecture is very interesting.

That is all.

The Louvre - Lens is a must visit for the extraordinary setting, the fabulous architecture and the museum organisation based on the time line. We were a group of architects, culture tourists and engineers from the US, France, China and loved the experience. We also benefitted from the trip to visit Lille and other nearby sites like the Villa Cavrois.
