Ah, we had a lovely stay here all on our own mid-week. The drive to the lodge is spectacular-especially for bird watchers (take it slow!!) and as you bend around more and more corners of the lovely gravel road, your anticipation grows-what lies at the end of the road??
The lodge is one long building that stretches across the edge of a huge mountain face that overlooks the entire Cathkin Peak, Cathedral Peak and Ampthitheatre mountain range. A huge lawn lies infront of the lodge and happily grazing semi-wild horses are the only obstacle to a breathtaking view.
The decor of the lodge is a little outdated and could do with a few fresh flowers and a little less yesterday but that is not what you are there for, right? Choose one of the stunning big corner rooms with windows on all sides; the nights are deathly still, the mornings ridiculously picturesque and you'll probably sleep very well in the very comfy beds with wonderful white cotton sheets.
Yummy country food is provided (by candlelight and with much love) so all you need to do is take a rug, a good book and a cup of tea to the edge of the lawn and spend your day gazing at the view or staring up at the Lammergeyer circling in the skies. There are great walks too-

High in the Drakensberg Mountains, at 1700 m altitude, some 50 kms north of Bergville, at the end of a very well mapped 12 kms long dirt road, you will find Drakensberg Mountain Retreat. It consists of the Barnhouse conference facility and the Vergezient Lodge. We had booked ourselves into the latter.

Their website gives very precise information on size and equipment of the respective rooms, and prices vary accordingly. Hence we were accommodated in our requested very large room 1, impeccably clean (with some slippery risks on the very polished wooden floor), unfortunately with a bathroom just not up to the overall standard of the room. The views from the room and from the place are stunning. The overall atmosphere breathes "relax, relax, relax".

We were welcomed warmly and given an explanatory tour of the place. As it is so remote, dinner is served on site and is included in the room price. It turned out to be a very pleasant experience. The overall ambiance in the general rooms is a bit eighties, and we could not suppress some suggestions resembling the place with often found old peoples' homes.

Service was very nice and relaxed. How good it is that a conscious generation of black people has emerged in South Africa that is fit and prepared to communicate with differently coloured (incl. white) guests at equal and open level. Once you show as a guest that you respect them and offer your openness, very pleasant black-white encounters take place, as we experienced all across the Rainbow Nation.

The experience of sleeping, dining & breakfasting at Vergezient Lodge was very nice indeed, and adequately priced. Highly recommended, when our travels bring us back to the area we will certainly return to Drakensberg Mountain Retreat.

I love this place. This is my second stay there. The first time we stayed in two different rooms so I stay in three rooms in total. The best by far is the room on the other side of the pool area, but don't tell anyone! It is like having your own apt. with access to the pool. It is always quite and relaxing and the food is great. There is an honor bar in the dining area which is great for some sundowners. The place is very relaxed and comfortable. Great value for money. The sheets on the bed are so nice I was considering stealing them!
The first time we were going hiking in Amphitheater every day which became a bit of a slog because the route is quite circuitous and probably takes 45 mins if driving in a low clearance car. Much quicker if you are in an SUV.
There is new management in place and Paul seems like a great chap.

FYI, there seems to be 3 separate places to review this lodge in TripAdvisor...

My daughter and I spent one night at Vergezient Lodge. As stated in previous reviews, the views from the lodge are magnificent and the food was very good!
I have only two complaints. Firstly the walls are very thin and anything but soundproof so sounds from adjoining rooms filter through the walls. Secondly, we had no hot water the following morning as the geyser had been switched off. Although this was rectified, we had to go to other rooms to shower which was very inconvenient.

You cannot but love this lodge. It's like an eagle's nest high in the mountains. The way to get there is challenging but no 4WD is required. The environment is simply stunning! We walked a day in the Royal Natal Parc and another day we left straight at the lodge, but all necessary explanation from Dolly. Both walks were amazing, every 3 steps another fantastic view.
The Vergezient lodge, is a cosy place, with lots of charm. A warm welcome, always a chat, nice fires in the evening, very good food. The cook is a real gem! In the evening, after diner, we retired with a beer or a glass of wine from the honesty bar in one of the seating areas. There even is a library room!
We didn't use the pool, but it looked fine. The rooms are large and the showers hot. All we needed was provided. We need more places as this one!
