What makes Wild Horses Mountain Lodge special is its location within the Sterkfontein nature reserve adjacent to the Sterkfontein dam. There are very few places on earth with such a special setting. The views are breathtaking and there are many ways in which to enjoy what nature has to offer when visiting this lodge. We went kayaking during our visit and enjoyed every minute.

I went on an outride with John and this was the highlight of my stay. One could not ask for a better backdrop than the Drakensberg mountains when riding. The horses are very affectionate and you can spend as much time with them as you wish.

On our last day we went for a boat ride. Service at the lodge is friendly and the boat ride was scheduled at a time that suited us. The boat ride was very serene and we recommend that you try and fit this into your itinerary.

Dinner was superb and the chef went out of his way to accommodate our requests. Lunch and breakfast was also very enjoyable.

I am giving the experience a five star rating.

If you have certain expectations with regards to small luxuries in your room I would inform the lodge in good time. I am sure they will do their best to accommodate your requests in order for the room to meet your five star expectations.

Room Tip: Choose a room with a view of the dam.

We spent my wife's birthday for the weekend of the 26th October 2012 at Wild Horses Mountain Lodge. The scenary on route to the lodge was breath-taking. Upon arrival we were welcomed by the very friendly Esmeralda and taken in to complete the formalities. Thereafter she showed us to our room and everything I had requested, from the rose petals on the bed, the bouquet of flowers and the bottle of wine was all perfectly in place. My wife was pleasantly surprised and I was really impressed. I must add that the wine, which I left in her capable hands, tasted absolutely divine. The evening progressed with a dinner which was all romantic and private in the winner cellar and it just made the evening so much more special. The Chef, Van Heerden has great talent and we were really impressed with the 3 course meal whicch we were served. It was great not having to choose from a menu and we were pleasantly surprised with the presentation and more importantly the taste of the food. Day 2 was just as great and we definitely enjoyed Esmeralda and Van Heerden's company that evening. We will definitely go back to Wild Horses and will recommend it to anyone looking for a time out or a romantic getaway from all the hustle and bustle.

Room Tip: The Sunrise Room has a good view of the Sterkfontein dam and surroundings...

We heard about Wild Horses from a friend who lives in Harrismith when we were looking for a wedding venue.. We went to view in the beginning of the year and loved the place from the start. Seeing as we love the dam and the lodge was breathtakingly beautiful. A venue you only dream about and hear about in fairy tales came true. We stopped looking for venues straight away as we fell in love with Wild Horses and the people were amazing. Both Hosts are amazing people, Esmeralde (true organiser, and makes mouth-watering cocktails :-) was also our wedding planner and she did an excellent job (I am so grateful for everything she planned and organised) and van Heerden (makes food to die for) Thanks Wild Horses for the most amazing wedding (15 September 2012) we could ever dream off. We left after the wedding not only happy that we had the most amazing and perfect day we could wish for with special memories but with new friends we made as well. We can only thank Es and van Heerden for special and fun times and also lots of laughter and for making our special day even more special and also the owners who were there to help if we needed anything and who also shared in our special day. We’ve been to Wild Horses a couple of times, sometimes just popped in and twice stayed over (when we viewed and also our wedding weekend) and everytime we’ve been met with the same friendliness and efficiency as the first time we’ve been to Wild Horses. We will definitely be back often.

Room Tip: All rooms are stunning and have gorgeous views

I question when this establishment received their 5* rating as it fell short of such a rating - There is not 24 hour service. You can only have brown bread (no white or whole wheat, or other) for toast in the morning. Don't expect a muffin in the morning even though you have asked the night before, you are told there is no flour !!

The Manager is aka chef, aka handyman (plumber, electrician etc), aka Front manager, aka general manager aka barman - his wife who should be the front person only does admin and don't expect a smile

As I like my privacy and like to keep to myself and not interact with other guests when I am away (as it is my 'recharge the battery time') & my 55th birthday, we asked to have the dinning table for supper in a room they call the cellar. As the Manger was more than quin-tasking did not notice we had arrived I had to call for assistance

Even though the establishment rates itself as 5* dont expect a chocolate on the pillow or tea time mid morning or mid afternoon, you must pre-ask for it !!! Due to its decor and quality of decor I give it a maximum 4*

Our stay at Wild Horses was most enjoyable. Stunning setting, fantastic food, very relaxing and peaceful. The hosts are both attentive and welcoming, making you feel at home immediately. We were only able to stay one night but would have loved to stay longer.

When Chef Van Heerden makes a suggestion for breakfast take him up on it, you will not be disappointed. Both the 3 course dinner and breakfast were absolutely perfect and delicious.

We would definitely recommend the Lodge to anybody.
