Our twelve day stay at Antoremba Lodge in December 2013 was one we will never forget, in fact we struggle not to keep thinking about it. We travelled from South Africa as a family of five, including three children aged 9, 6 and 3. As a family we are drawn to interesting places, we love the sea, nature and wildlife. We were keen to have a relaxing holiday in an island beach setting, while still being sure to feel like this was Madagascar. Antoremba allowed for all of those wants.

The lodge is situated on the mainland, but successfully tricks you into believing you are on a much smaller island. And for this we were grateful as we were far removed from the very touristy nature of Nosy Be, but still had easy access to all the attractions of Nosy Be and surrounding islands as well as further exploration of Ankify and the plantations and forests in the immediate area. We would wake up to the daily calm of the ocean and go to bed listening to the sounds of the natural forest behind our room.

Antoremba is extremely well managed and maintained, with a compliment of friendly and efficient staff. But you can feel that Antoremba is loved and not just managed by its owners, especially in the absolute spoil that is the food. Lunch and dinner are three course affairs of the palate and in twelve days we never had the same meal twice. The food is fresh and full of flavour, prepared by a local cook and heavily influenced by the owners' French heritage and excellent knowledge of fish and shellfish. We were introduced to frogs legs and treated to a beautifully constructed Christmas dinner with complimentary wine pairings. And while the adults were happily explorative, meals were easily adapted to accommodate our children. But, beware the local rum!

Phillipe, the owner in residence, is kind and very generous with his knowledge and his willingness to arrange excursions and make your stay comfortable and memorable. We were overwhelmed when he even went out of his way to ensure our children woke to little Madagascan presents for Christmas. Phillipe and Hoby, who help with client liaison and English-French translation, are very attentive and lovely people. We have missed all three in our daily lives back home again.

On days when not on excursion, we lazed on the beach, swam and snorkelled with afternoon walks in the garden looking for land and hermit crabs and elusive chameleon and lemur. We were treated to sights of both as well as an incredible encounter on our third night with a green turtle laying her eggs at the edge of our verandah. We look forward to hearing of the hatchlings progress in mid-February.

From Antoremba we made day trips to Nosy Komba, to view macaco lemur, boa and endemic tortoises; to Tani Kelly (twice) for exquisite marine reserve snorkelling from the beach and the boat, as well as sightings of fulvus lemur on the jungle walk to the lighthouse; to Nosy Be for some shopping; boat fishing for the boys; an excellent cocoa plantation tour to Millot's with Madame Madu and a humbling visit to Mamok fishing village where life seems largely untouched by outside influence. On each of these trips Phillipe, the owner, ensured we were well taken care of and added opportunities to circle the islands, swim, explore and be well-fed and watered. Fellow travellers took the opportunity to dive and had magnificent sightings of large shoal coral fish and the incredible spoil of snorkelling with a whale shark.

We had an absolutely incredible time in the care of very special people. Thank you Antoremba, Phillipe, Hoby, Phillipe and all the staff.

We stayed at Antoremba in December 2013 and it was honestly one of our best holidays ever.

From having almost your own secluded beach (we shared it with only 5 other guests), to food that some of the best restaurants would find difficult to equal. We had an amazing time.

Philippe, Hoby and Philippe (owner), yes there are two Philippes, were outstanding hosts and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed.

We would recommend Antoremba to anyone who is looking for a relaxing holiday away from the usual tourist traps. We had 2 amazing dives (with a wreck included) and outstanding snorkelling (both on out trips or just off the beach of Antoremba).

Many thanks for a holiday we will never forget.

Stayed here mid July. The property is only accessable by boat and has its own private beach. There are only 6 rooms in private villas, all fronting the beach. The dining experience was amazing, some of the best food we had eaten in Madagascar and served while overlooking the private beach. The rooms and entire property were immaculate. One of the cleanest places I've stayed. The owners are a retired French couple who treat you as if you are family. They set up any activities you would like. Just one example of their thoughtfulness is when I had scheduled a scuba dive. The dive master wouldn't go out with less than 4 in the group, because it wasn't financially benificial for him. We had 3 in the group. The owner, Phillipe went on the dive just so we would be able to experience it!

I really can't say enough about this place - amazing private beach, extremely clean rooms, only 6 bungalows, unbelieveable food, great owners. This was one of the nicest places we stayed in Madagascar and I would definitely recommend staying here to others. We travelled to nearby Nosy Be, and I can't imagine staying there after being at Antoremba.

Antoremba is a tiny, secluded resort sandwiched between a lush rain forest and gorgeous beach. With only six rooms, it is never going to be bustling, which is exactly how I prefer my holiday accommodation to be!

The owners are French, but do speak a little bit of English - just enough to make communication not totally impossible. However, what they lack in English language skills, they totally make up for in the friendly, warm and hospitable way they treat their guests. The same goes for every single staff member at the resort; within a few hours, you will feel as if you have come to visit family and you will be sad to leave - guaranteed!

The rooms are basic but lovely. Don't let the lack of air-conditioning worry you; there is always a lovely sea-breeze blowing through the wooden shutters and we really didn't miss it.

A definite highlight is the food. Seafood is on the menu everyday (which might be a problem if you're not keen on seafood, but I am pretty sure some arrangement can be made), and I looked forward to every meal! Breakfast is a simple affair and consists of bread and breakfast cake, but eaten in those surroundings, everything tastes amazing!

I would certainly recommend Antoremba for those looking for a quiet get-away.

Room Tip: We stayed in Room no 7, which was right at the end. It was perfect.

This very secluded and private, reached only by a boat, family own piece of paradise is something for all dreamers out there. The cottages, or lodges are beautifully decorated, with nice warm showers (even though you need a little bit of patience for the water to warm up), comfortable beds with mosquito nets, lovely breakfasts and beautiful dinners/lunches... Owned by a very friendly and accommodating French couple this place is like a little home away from home (a really posh and dreamy home that is). Island hopping trips to the snorkeling paradise of Tanikely and the lovely Nosy Komba with a 'mini zoo' and some really good markets with the typical Malagasy handicraft are a possibility, but you should check well in advance. The beach is to die for and the sand so soft your feet just can't get enough of it!

Eating breakfast watching turtles popping out their heads! The excursions include snorkeling, diving, cacao plantations and visiting the nearby islands (Tani Keli is a must!!!). Fantastic quality vanilla pods at the market at Hellville. My husband and I have visited many islands up to date, but we really want to go back to Antoremba!! The food is great and the hosts are friendly and even taught me some tricks in chess! My husband caught his first tuna whilst returning from one of the excursions. Absolutely in love with this secluded lodge!!! Went there April 2012.
