“2 nights at this lovely guest house”
Reviewed 8 July 2013

Thank you Alison & Alan for a lovely comfortable two night stay at your guest house. A warm welcome from Alan and very tasty breakfasts from Alison, we didnt need lunch as these saw us through to dinner. rooms extremely comfortable especially the beds, dont be put off by the room with bathroom across the landing as this was the room we had and it was very private and a bit cheaper , fluffy robes and towels , the usual nice extras in the bathroom . they also catered for our mum and dad as they cannot go upstairs easily and they were put in the room downstairs as requested, very comfortable for them and nice views out to the garden, mum now wants a sleigh bed ! they especially enjoyed the cake and the sherry!!. lots of info from Alan about the area and where to eat. I would definately book this guest house again. see you again hopefully from the Haywards (& the old duffers) :-)

Thank you all so much for this super review, it was a pleasure having you stay with us. We hope that the sleigh bed shopping is successful!!, if not you can alway come back again. Once again it was our pleasure to have you stay with us and we hope that you enjoyed the rest of you trip around the country. We hope 'the old duffers' are still hitting the sherry and that we have started a trend!!
With our warmest regards.

If you are looking for a peaceful, quality B&B, off the beaten track, then this is the place for you. We were greeted very informally by Alan and Alison (no checking in). They explained the layout of the lounge, garden etc then showed us to our room.
We had a 4 poster bed in a decent size room plus a large bathroom with roll-top bath and shower cubicle. Only quibble there was no dressing table which we think most ladies like. The bed proved to be very comfy and the well-stocked tea tray was very welcome.
Breakfast was fresh and tasty (we had full English), and there was fresh fruit and juice. Although eggs and smoked salmon were advertised online you would have to ask in advance in order for the salmon to be prepared from store. There were printed directions available to a lovely little bistro (The Wild Olive) in Gosforth, 4 miles further up the A595, and we had a meal there on our 2nd night. (Our wedding anniversary)
We stayed 2 nights and although we like peace and quiet we never saw another person staying there which made things rather short on atmosphere. Very handily placed for Ravenglass railway, Muncaster Castle & gardens, Wastwater lake.

Room Tip: Only 6 rooms which all face towards distant fells.

Many thanks for your review of your midweek stay with us, we would just like to respond to a couple of items mentioned in it. We were actually full during your visit, mainly with regular guests some on business and some up to do specific walks, they were on this occasion out early and in late. We do offer alternatives at breakfast which usually do not need to be pre-ordered, we had unfortunatly run out of smoked salmon. Muncaster fell is approximately 1 mile away. We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your comments and for the high score given.

I have to say a fantastic thank you to Alan and Alison for making our stay so nice.
It is a fantastic place, off the main road and everything about it is beautiful.
My husband and I are 6ft 8 and 6ft 3 respectively, and it is the first time ever we have managed to get both of us into the very glamorous four poster bed. All of the rooms boast 6ft 6 mattresses and the whole experience was great. Extra bonus is the sloe and damson gin on arrival in the sitting room, and cakes in the bedroom for an extra treat.
We cannot wait until we have another opportunity to come back and see you both.
The breakfast was gorgeous, and chatting with Alan afterwards, well it was like we have known him for ages. THANK-YOU

Room Tip: They are all equipped with extra long beds and the whole place is quiet due to the location off the...

What an absolute gem of a B&B this is. Greeted by Alison and made to feel so welcome. Shown the guests sitting room with free Sloe Gin - Yes totally free!. There was cake waiting for us in the room on the tea tray and we were made to feel like friends rather than guests. Alison even offered to book us somewhere to eat in the evening as it did get quite busy with it only being a small, sleepy village.

The rooms are amazing. King sized beds with brilliant views from the windows of the Lake District. In fact the B&B was so nice, we didn't want to go outside!

Alan and Alison go out of their way to help you, the breakfasts are brilliant and the building is gorgeous. A grade II listed building - outstanding.

We will certainly be booking again - thank you so much for a fantastic short break.

Room Tip: The 4 poster rooms look out over the hills - great views.

We selected this hotel because we were going to the Lake District in high season and wanted to avoid the large crowds. Well, this is the place to do that. Holmrook is a sleepy little town with one only pub owned by Latvians. The food in that pub is strange, but we also had the best trout that we've eaten in all of Britain! However, don't let Alan tell you that the pub is 500 feet from the hotel. It's a mile away, but a fine little walk. This hotel is a great base for visiting the western lake district, and there's a nuclear reactor just miles away! They have rooms with private baths and shared baths; the latter is cheaper, and if we'd known that the hotel was never at capacity, we would have opted for the latter as well. One day we did not get our room cleaned, and that was surprising for a hotel of this caliber, but otherwise our stay there was great, as were the homemade breakfasts made to order by Allison. And the local beer is to die for!

Room Tip: Ask first if there will be other guests at the hotel, and if not, go ahead and get the room without...

We initially came to stay at Carleton Green whilst planning for our wedding at nearby Muncaster Castle. We enjoyed our first stay so much that we decided to book the property for the bridal party to stay in for the wedding. The discovery of such a relaxing, stylish but still homely B&B meant that it was the natural choice also for all of our subsequent planning visits. On all our trips, Alan and Alison were extremely welcoming and friendly and, in our specific circumstances, played an important (and much valued) part in helping to organise our big day.

All the rooms are beautifully decorated and appointed. A particular treat are the cakes which Alison provides on the tea trays (which also came with vintage tea cups which we rather liked). The breakfast is served in the sunny dining room and brings with it a fabulous choice of cereals, yogurts, fruit and toast etc. together with cooked breakfast options. The 'Full English' is not to be missed - my husband still raves about it (particularly the potato cakes).

The B&B is situated in a peaceful location which is, nevertheless, handy for a number of location attractions, including Muncaster Castle, the Ravenglass and Eskdale railway, the pretty village of Ravenglass and a number of beaches - not to mention, of course, nearby Wasdale with Britain's deepest lake and favourite view. Alan and Alison are knowledgeable guides to the many attractions that the local area has to offer (including ideas for walks to suit any ability) and are always willing to provide tips to guests for days out, the best local eateries and watering holes etc.

We would unhesitatingly recommend a stay at Carleton Green (we know that our guests are all extremely keen to return in the near future). The label 'B&B' does not really do justice to the property or guests' experience - both are really more akin to the feel of a small boutique hotel.

This is the most outstanding B & B we have visited. From the moment of arrival Alan and Allison made all feel so welcome. The tranquility and ambience of Carleton Green pervades the house. The rooms are beautiful and so comfortable. Their willingness to make everything right for their guests was impressive. The 'exceptional' evening meal for our large family and their friends before a wedding day was perfect, despite considerable problems with our timing due to wedding organizational problems. They dealt with a large diverse requirement from their guests with such charm and efficiency, although it must have tried their patience since we ranged from 11 months to 65 years of age.

The food was delicious, their hospitality wonderful and their good humour a joy. This was an extraordinary house run by an even more extraordinary family.
