“Great wedding, average room”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 16 October 2013 via mobile

We recently had our wedding at the Bridge which we could not fault. Diane, the manager, made sure everything went smoothly and everything was done exactly as we requested. The food was delicious and served very well.

The function room needed to be reset 3 times throughout the day and this was done so that it was not an inconvenience to the guests.

We had an amazing day and would highly recommend anyone wishing to get married to do it here. The staff were all very helpful with all our requests. Due to the close proximity to Wasdale lake we were able to get some amazing photos taken at the lakeside as well as outside the Bridge itself.

We were a little disappointed with the bridal room. There were no toiletries other than a bottle of body wash and the room was very dark. Good tea making facilities though and the bed was very comfortable. We have stayed in many hotels and feel £90 per night to be rather steep for the standard of the rooms here. Great breakfast though.

Overall I would definitely come back for a meal as the food is consistently excellent.

Thank you for your review, sorry we did not meet your requirements with regards to the room.
We will be looking to improve what we provide with our rooms on special occasions.
Just to point out the room was complimentary, as with all bridal parties. We are updating rooms as we business allows us.

Thanks again.

We stayed at the bridge inn for a family wedding, which was brilliant and very enjoyable.

The issue however was the accommodation. We paid £90 for a cramped uncomfortable bed and a shower which had zero pressure and zero temperature. It's at £50 bed and breakfast standard at best. Breakfast was, however superb.

Some very simple things could improve the accommodation immeasurably - a new boiler for one and a new bed the other. As for the bathroom, the old 1970's sliding door is a bit poor, but there is little space.

I would throughly recommend the bridge inn for dinner or a wedding, but I would stay elsewhere unless you can negotiate a substantially reduced rate.

Thanks for the honesty with your review. We have to date only had two comments on the water pressure and they where both on the same weekend! We are looking at this issue.
As for the room size we have a selection of rooms and on this occaision you got one of the smaller ones with a view of the river. We are upgrading the rooms in general and the sliding door will be replaced soon.

The Bridge Inn was nice but very overpriced, we stayed here for a long weekend, and was not very impressed, the bar staff could learn some manners when serving, and the food was nice but very expensive for what it was, the room was nice but well overpriced, the final crunch came when we left, there was a bouncer in the carpark with his car engine running, I think they thought we were going to do a runner,we found this very intimidating, I would not stay here again

Thanks for the review. Can I start by saying that we are surpised by some of your comments as we do not have bouncers on our doors at any time let alone 08:00 in the morning! We do have some senoir engineers from the local industry who stay with us and some of them get picked up to save on the number of cars on the roads!!
As for our staff and prices we have a very good reputation for both of these as can be seen by the constant reviews we get and in our visitors book.
We are sorry you felt that the room was not to your standard and we are undertaking a program of refurbishment as we communicate,

Very accommodating staff, clean and comfortable rooms with all you might need. We didn't have a bath, (room16) only a shower so if you're particular about this, check before you book.

The pub itself is really cosy with a fire, great ales, still cider and snug nooks to settle into for the night. The food is pub food, average I would say with a bit too much use of the microwave for my liking but I must commend them on their 'real' chips - fantastic.
Breakfast is a good spread of cereals, muesli, granola, fresh fruit, toast and either kippers or full english with black pudding - the works and plenty of it too. Again though the full english was somewhat microwaved, but this won't bother alot of people, it's just a personal dislike.

It's in a great location for walkers looking to trek up Scafell Pike or Great Gable, you'll need a car to get there but it's only about 20 mins up the road where you can park at Wasdale (and you must visit the famous Wasdale Head Inn, if only for a pint after a hard days walking, the food is good here - go for the lamb tattie hot pot, very nice)

Room Tip: Rm 16 had no bath just a shower so if you like a bath make sure you request a room with one. Our ro...

We were in the area visiting family and the Santon Bridge Inn has been a venue for us to eat on a number of occasions before. Frankly we've never found it to be anything more than average and always a bit pricey but today we wanted to have lunch with my mother-in-law before heading away back to Scotland and so my sister-in-law had suggested we give the place another go because they run a carvery on Sundays till 3pm and this fitted well with our schedule.

So, we arrived at twenty past two - not I think unreasonably late for a Sunday lunch. There were five of us and we had a dog with us (meaning we couldn't go to the restaurant area and had to stay in the bar). As they were quite busy, there was a little bit of staff consternation about where to seat us but kindly a couple who had a large booth table were preparing to leave and very kindly offered us their table - which we accepted gratefully.
And here began the unpleasantness. As we thanked the couple for their consideration, the staff member who was showing us to the seat said loudly and very rudely "they were leaving anyway" in a very harsh voice. I felt utterly mortified because it was clear that the couple had cleared up a little early and had been very sweet about it - so I was shocked by her complete lack of manners.
So then as we were being seated, the same woman said rather commandingly, 'are you just in for a drink?'. We explained that we were actually in to eat and were told rudely and abruptly that we would 'have to hurry up' because they were about to stop serving in ten minutes. Having been told they served till 3pm we questioned this and reluctantly she admitted that they do normally serve till 3pm but were closing the kitchen early as it was quiet. This seemed a bit confusing as the bar area was easily more than half full. We were then basically bullied into hurrying an order on pain of not being fed.
The woman was so rude and abrupt we were tempted to just leave but with a four hour drive home ahead of us, we couldn't be bothered to start searching for somewhere else as we would run the risk of missing lunchtime somewhere else.
The carvery was ok - generous portions - a bit dry but tasty and the lady serving there was delightful - kind, helpful and a pleasure to deal with - she was particularly kind to my kids.
Two of us ordered from the menu - this was less generous - small portions, wilted salad, warm coleslaw and frost bitten lettuce. My experiences of ordering from the menu here in the past have been similar.
Last moan really is that the pot of tea we ordered was homeopathic strength (two mean bags in a massive pot).
So what was meant to be a nice parting lunch out with my Husband's elderly Mum, who we don't see very often, was completely soured by us being made to feel like we were only grudgingly being tolerated.

I can understand an establishment perhaps deciding to close the kitchen a bit early if they think it's quiet but all the points she made could have been said kindly and politely. As we left, I noticed the staff all piling into the hotel sitting room to eat a carvery lunch - so I wonder if the rudeness and early closing was just that they wanted their own lunch and couldn't be bothered with serving anybody else.
If that's the case then I think they've missed the point of what's involved with running a restaurant.

My husband and I called in at the Santon Bridge yesterday intending to have a swift drink and a sandwich, but found ourselves tempted by the Sunday Carvery. We had previously been warned by friends who had already dined at the Carvery that it wasn't very good and portions were small and a bit "cardboard". Well, chef has obviously pulled his socks up as not only was our meal delicious but there was plenty of it too !
We were served by a very pleasant young lady who told us she lives at Egremont, roast beef, roast turkey and a lovely selection of vegetables, and further more we were invited to return for seconds if we wished. No thanks, not necessary as we were more than adequately filled with one plate full, and I must add that by no means do my husband and I have small appetites. We will return.

Room Tip: Don't always believe what other's tell you, go and find out for yourselves.

We're bagging Wainwrights and had a few to do in the southwest corner of The Lake District. The Bridge Inn was ideally located for this purpose, being about a 10 minute drive along Wastwater to Wasdale Head. The Herdwicks did slow us down a couple of times! Our room was very pleasant with views over the river and we were lucky enough to be there when the house martins were feeding their young above our window, which was quite a sight. The breakfasts were very good - the full English was substantial and you could help yourself to coffee, tea, fruit, cereal etc. We ate in the bar a couple of times during our stay and the meals were very good, the prices about average for the area and generous portions provided. All in all, a very nice place to stay. Sally & Chris from Devon

Room Tip: Rooms on the river side have lovely views.
