We arrived by bus from Alicante and soon discovered that the whole of Elche is a palm garden. Palms are everywhere but there is a special artistic garden which has been laid out with palms, cactus and water features that provide a spectacular setting. We walked down to the Elche visitor centre from the bus station and found a small road train that left on the hour and stopped at the Garden and picked you up later on any half hour. The garden is signposted with about 25 view points and has seating to allow you to take in the various sights. Took a lot of photos which included the ducks and terrapins lazing in the water. The "noddy train" was 2 Euros for over 65s and the garden was similarly priced

One of our favourite day trips this palm garden has surprises round every turn. Beautiful palms in a garden setting with under planting of strelitzia, agapanthus etc., with bourganvillias trained into "sunshades" and by one of the very large "water features" a large slope is planted with succulents and cacti from different regions of the world. The lake has small islands on which terrapins sun bath and annoy the water birds. The most spectacular part of the garden are the palms many dedicated to famous Spaniards and European royalty, one has divided into eight trunks and stands alone which makes it all the more unique. One of the many copies of the Dama del Elche is, at this time, standing on a water feature not far from the small shop part of which is also the admission gate. We tend to take a picnic with us as it's so relaxing and peaceful to sit on a bench overlooking the lake having lunch (much to the amusement of the non British visitors)! The palms of Elche were originally planted by the Phoenicians some 2,500 years ago and the huerta is part of the palm forest which has been enclosed into a garden. Parking is a problem as much of the area has narrow roads with no parking but parking can be found within a small walk of the garden. There is a choice of souveniers in the shop but we always take away with a a small fig "cake" very good if you have a sweet tooth!

in the heart of Elxe in Spain is this beautiful palm park with over 200,000 palms! It's quite breath-taking with palms from Europe, the Americas, Australia & ASia. It was named after Jose Csstano who owned it till 1918. From squat cacti to umbrella ferns to a literal tall cactus tree to an eight armed palm--it's a wonderful sight.
Then go for a drink - or food - opposite at the fabulous Hotel Huerto del Cura!
