Campanile Bethune - Fouquieres Les Bethune
Reviewed 6 August 2013

Stayed here for one night on our way back to the UK from Spain. I did not have great expectations of the place, and indeed they were met! Firstly the place looks a bit run down like it's due a re-furb soon, with the paint in our room peeling ETC. Can live with that though. What was not so good was that the Air Con was FEEBLE and did not cool the room at all. Also our toilet whilst functional was I'm afraid not the cleanest we have seen. We ate at the place and again our expectations were not high, but in an effort to get a decent meal I went for the top priced set menu at I seem to remember 23E. I ordered a steak which was very tough and only just edible. Not the best Campanile we have stayed at. ( We have stayed at quite a number over the years) On the plus side all the staff seemed friendly and helpful enough. If it was us again in the area we would stay at the "Premier Hotel" type place that is just next door and is 20E a night cheaper.

My brother and I spent four nights here in mid-June 2013, as we visited the nearby site of the Battle of Loos, tracing where our grandfather fought in 1915, and then various other First World War cemeteries and battlefields heading up towards Ypres, 30 miles north.

The Campanile was well-placed for this (it did take us a while to find it, even though we had been warned that it was well-hidden). It was very much what we expected from a Campanile - we shared a twin room, and the bathroom was clean, and unlike the Campanile at Peronne, where we stayed last year (visiting the Somme battlefields), there were hooks for dressing-gowns on the bathroom wall, and the bath shower-attachment worked properly. The hotel is motel-style, with every room's front door opening to an outside walkway. The rooms have thick walls , and we didn't hear the people in the neighbouring rooms.

Once you discover the little pedestrian cut-through beyond the McDonalds and alongside a car showroom, the walk into central Bethune (a pleasant town) is only 20 minutes, and there are plenty of excellent cafes and bars around the central square, and the locals are very friendly, although slightly surprised that tourists should be visiting Bethune!

The staff at the Campanile were delightful and efficient, happy to speak in English when our French ran out, and the four breakfasts and two evening meals that we ate there were excellent. If you are visiting the Loos battlefield, or just passing through this bit of France, then this motel-style hotel is absolutely fine.

Room Tip: Don't expect too much - this is a good no-nonsense place to stay when passing through or touring...

A modern hotel conveniently situated just off Junction 6 of the A6 Motorway. The insignificant looking access road is just at the entrance to a large retail park (first right after the roundabout) and could do with better and more prominent signs. Rooms are basic but comfortable and very clean. A tea/coffee tray is provided (with top-ups available on request) and there is good free Wi-Fi.

In the restaurant there is a choice of menus, but the stars are the buffets for starters and sweets. These were ample, imaginative, and frequently topped up by a chef to ensure they were kept fresh. The cheese course was also good, and the main course was OK but not special. The buffet breakfast was pretty standard but fine - cereals, breads, ham, cheese and jam. Staff were friendly but in the evening seemed a bit pushed.

Would certainly use it again as a stop-off between Calais and destinations further south.

This was our first experience of staying at a campanile and chosen primarily on location, a few minutes off junction 6 (bethune) the main A26 about 50 mins drive from Calais. After the peage at the first roundabout take second right into the retail park and then take sharp first turn on the right. Head straight past decathlon and you will see the hotel on the left.

Check in was great and he kindly provided us with directions to our restaurant that night (Les Trois Brasseurs in nearby Bruay la Buissiere). Room was clean and the bed very comfortable with crisp white sheets. Bathroom was fine with good over bath shower.

The rooms arent huge and had a few marks and knocks but with a big desk, blackout blind, flat screen TV and a heater and aircon overall the offering was more than suitable for our needs. Nice touch for a french hotel was a kettle and free tea and coffee. Our room at the back faced a lovely quiet grassy area whilst those at the front face large car park and the road. Only slight downside was the walls are very thin so if you end up with noisy neighbours this might be an issue.

Recommended and we will definitely return.

A great location and

This hotel had great rooms at a good price. The staff were very helpful, the room was clean and bathroom was good. Complimentary tea and coffee were in the room, parking was easy and convenient and although on a trading estate was very quiet.

Room Tip: There was no swimming pool

Béthune is not the place you would go for a holiday - but booking for three generations and a party of eight at short notice in the middle of August, choice was limited.

But the place is totally adequate, the facilties ideal including tea making which I like, the breakfast Ok.

And Bethune is an ideal centre for the war cemeteries, Bruges and the Opal coast.

But finding it! Satnav takes you to within 100 metres - then it was down an almost unsigned lane at the corner of the Decatholon carpark. The management need to put out clearer signs

Room Tip: Some rooms are in a separate building - motel style

Part of a spilt holiday in Bethune and Peronne and the Campaniles couldn't have been more different! This was a pleasure - great staff, great food and great value. In a quiet part of the usual location of this sort of hotel (out of town shopping centre) but tucked away down a drive shared with a Premier Classe and surrounded with hedges. Close to lots of things to do/see, with tourist brochures available. Staff moved an table outside to the terrace for us when all tables were taken (we'd booked a terrace table for dinner earlier). Complimentary glass of gazpacho soup while we chose from the menu. Campanile are good value normally, and this was a special offer.
