Cold, shabby room (scorch marks on table, stink of an old smoking room, faded covers) - but seemed clean. I was put in the building that isn't part of the main hotel - a pet hate of mine as it makes me feel unsafe as a lone lady - no hotel staff present in this building!

Don't be fooled by the menu of the onsite restaurant - it sounds nice, but it's poorly executed. For example, I had the baked camembert - an entire box, with warm tomatoes but cold camembert - quite a revolting combination. This was followed by a risotto that appeared to have been made with white bog-standard rice and had 'veg' to accompany that were just roasted potatoes! I was seated next to a table of drunken lads, which was quite intimidating as I was on my own.

The room really was cold - in the hotel guide they suggest that if you find it cold, you can use blankets - a helpful, parental approach (or maybe they could turn up the heating?). I seriously considered wearing my coat! The bed was soft and uncomfortable.

I'd recommend staying in one of the nearby cities rather than out here - it's got to be better. This place must just suffer from having no competition!

This is a lovely building with nice gardens but the service leaves a lot to be desired. Restaurant food very expensive but very ordinary - staff pleasant but obviously not trained. Bar food terrible! My West Retland salad was described as a tossed salad with tuna and olives but was served with neither tuna or olives. When I informed the girl she took it back to the kitchen and it returned with tuna but no olives!!
We had a newly refurbished standard room - it was OK although we had no bulb in the only bedside lamp. The sash window would
not open properly - it kept sliding down. The shower wouldn't turn off fully, the desk/dressing table was on the verge of collapse. The pillows were tiny nasty foam type. I think most of the rooms were in a building away from the main hotel building.
We ordered morning newspapers but had to collect them from the reception ! Car parking space was a problem when we were there maybe because there was a wedding - weddings seem to take priority at this hotel.
Breakfast on sunday morning at 9am was busy yet only one young lad appeared to be on duty. There was no fresh fruit left on the buffet only coco pops and rice crispies were available it was noisey with lots of people milling about the self service buffet - again there seemed to be a shortage of experienced staff to give service to hotel guests. We left without breakfast.
The management of this hotel need to get their fingers out and get some supervisory and trained staff in place.

I've stayed at the West Retford Hotel four times now. I really enjoyed my stay on the first three occasions, the only fly in the ointment being the poor value for money of the food (poor quality in the case of the bar food, high prices for quite ordinary stuff in the restaurant). Previously I would have rated the hotel 3 out of 5.

My most recent stay in November 2006 has dropped the rating to 2 out of 5, and this is largely due to the sheer unpleasantness, rudeness and hostility shown by the new operations manager towards my party.

Disappointed with the food, blandest pate I've ever eaten.

Asked for a room service menu on arrival and it never appeared in 3 days.

Morrisons Supermarket close by, just as well.

No toilet brush in the room and the maid didn't seem to have one either.

Noisy wedding reception on Saturday evening with kids out of control and screaming in the garden till midnight. Night porter couldn't deal with it and admitted as much.

Breakfast adequate but so boring

Bed as hard as nails

Overcharged by reception but adjusted after it was pointed out.

There is refurbishment happening in the grounds and it will be nice.

Shame about the overall experience.

Advice avoid.....
