We stayed at the Sheraton Airport Hotel in Zaventem, Brussels for one night in order to catch an early flight the next morning. The location of the hotel is its best asset as it is the only hotel which is located just across the street from the check-in area at the airport. Hence, there is no need to take taxis or shuttles in the morning. The building has been the same ever since its inception in what I believe must have been the late seventies. It’s an uninspiring, gloomy, monolithic block of concrete with dark interiors. Having said that the hotel has done its best to update the public space. The reception area has got a nice lounge area beside it and the hotel’s restaurant looked actually pleasant and cozy. The bar area likewise was pretty enjoyable. We did not try the restaurant but did look at the menu on offer and the prices at least looked correct – not at all the inflated prices you would expect from airport hotels. The drinks in the bar -we did try the bar - are rather expensive on the other hand (a glass of average white wine for 9 EUR?). We chose to walk across the street and eat at Belle & Belge at the check-in area. They offer similar dishes there that are also served at the table but with a view of the runway and at lower prices. The rooms then. We were given a room at the second floor. Upon entering the room we found that there was an extra foldable bed on the floor occupying most of the space. The bed linen looked like it had been slept on. Given that we were only there one night we decided to ignore it but it certainly shouldn’t have happened in this type of hotel. The room was – just like the rest of the hotel – dark. A window that couldn’t be opened looked out over a sad, abandoned atrium inside the building. The room had no external windows. The room was correctly furnished albeit in a boring and impersonal style. The bathroom was uninspiring and boring as well. Nothing to get excited about in this hotel in fact. The air-conditioning dispensed an economically dosed airflow that did manage to lower the temperature of the room enough to be acceptable. However, for those accustomed to air-conditioning in warmer climes: expect to be disappointed. Check-out was painless. The bill was correct. The price-quality is obviously not good but then that is typical of airport hotels. Oh yes, the staff: I guess that’s just about the only nice thing about this establishment. Both at reception and in the bar they were helpful and friendly. In short: a mediocre airport hotel, ok for one night, devoid of charm that leaves you wondering if perhaps you shouldn’t have checked in downtown and taken that early taxi instead after all.
