This gem on lake Lugano is only a half hour drive from the ferry port on lake Como where you can visit Bellagio and other towns if you buy a day pass. The rooms are very basic but comfortable and quiet, with balconies facing the spectacular lake/mountain view. There is a sunning deck for swimming in the crystal clear water and breakfast is served in the lush shady lakeside garden. The restaurant is very good albeit pricey, service excellent. We took the advice from the concierge regarding day trips, hiking, etc. and every suggestion was perfect. We felt very welcome in the family-like atmosphere.

Room Tip: Lake side for spectacular views and quiet. Our "queen" bed was more like two rollaways pl...

This our 4th visit to the hotel; it is always one of the highlights of our trip. This time my wife and I decided just to hang around the hotel, the gardens, the adjacent village and just relax......and relax we did. The hotel, situated on Lake Lugano, has an excellent view of the lake and surrounding mountains. People come from all over the region to dine in the garden restaurant; the food is cosnsistently...perfect. The 4th generation hotel is special to us and I am sure many others.

Stayed here for 2 nights and grew to love the place. The restaurant is excellent and it is woderful to be able to sit outside under the vines overlooking the lake. Lovely old village with two or three local bars and some good walks up in the hills. Unfortunately you can not walk around the lake here but you can swim in it. Rooms were clean and v comfortable.

Room Tip: All rooms have a lake view.

I write this three years after the event - but it's telling that the memories evoked by just looking through our wedding photos from our 5 days spent at the Hotel Stella D'Italia in August 2010 make my wife and I feel as if we were there last weekend.

My wife and I have stayed at the Stella D'Italia twice in the last decade. Once just after we'd met in 2001, then again just after we were married nine years later. Both visits to this incredible, family -run gem of a place were pretty much perfect. The location, right by the edge of Lake Lugano is sublime - not just because of the scenery - you are in the Italian Lakes for God's sake, the scenery is pretty much guaranteed - no, it's the fact that you are not surrounded by other hotels. The little village of San Mamete may have another hostelry or two but the Stella D'Italia feels detached and special and you genuinely feel that you might be in another century, when someone had first had the bright idea of attracting foreigners to this part of Italy and built this hotel to put them in.

The highlight of the Stella D'Italia is the restaurant - with friendly, attentive service and open air dining area. The superb food and wine make eating at the hotel virtually mandatory every night. Why venture further afield? There are other restaurants and hotels within 10 miles but why would you want to tackle the winding, narrow lakeside road straight out of the Location Finder's Handbook - chapter entitled: 'Photogenic road for lakeside car chases in convertibles / suitable for Bond, Bourne etc.' Certainly not me - after a glass of wine or two, anyway. I might write that handbook actually - hold that thought.

So: the hotel restaurant is where we ate, happily, every day for breakfast and dinner. The hotel rowing boat is what we (well, I) rowed, most days, across the lake, as one should on one's honeymoon. If there is a possible reason for the prices for this superb hotel being about half of what you'd expect - and about a quarter of a cheap hotel on the Amalfi Coast in summer - it's that the bedrooms are fine - but not luxurious. Decent, clean, relatively spartan. Yet fabulous nonetheless because you are overlooking a lake, in Italy. On honeymoon. My new wife gamely wore a marvellous headscarf like a 50s film star, as I drove our rented Mazda MX5 along that lakeside road and I felt - well, a bit like this was how life was meant to be. On the way back to the airport she confessed she had really hoped to meet George Clooney - who has a place round these parts - but the success of the honeymoon ensured we navigated that minor bump in the road with the tolerance, forgiveness and love expected from those marriage vows we had just taken. Go and stay at this hotel on your next visit to the Italian Lakes. Per favore.

We've visited this hotel a few times since I last reviewed it in 2005!!

The great news this year is that a tunnel that takes most of the traffic away from this tiny village on the shore of Lake Lugano is now open so (unless you are a fan of traffic wars!) it's a much calmer place.

We ate a meal in the hotel restaurant with good food and exemplary service from the lovely restaurant staff. On a warm night, it doesn't get much better than eating al fresco on the shores of the lake.

The hotel side was a little disappointing. As always, we booked a Superior room (these are the best in the hotel) for £160 but it was a little tired and in need of modernisation, especially the beds and bathroom. We were in room 105 which was also very noisy, being over reception and exposed to the road. (A large proportion of the village seem to drive off on noisy motorbikes at 6am) There is also no wifi in the rooms which was a bit of a pain.

We did enjoy our stay but the management seems to be relying a little too much on the hotel's sublime location and past glories.

Room Tip: Better views on higher floors.

We first saw this hotel 5 years ago while on a boat trip on Lago Lugano and were quite impressed with the beautiful terrace and vines. Last year we spent 2 nights there and then, 3 nights this year. For us it is the epitome of old world charm and service. Excellent food, quiet polite service, lovely rooms with an unbeatable view of Lago Ceresio, and at this time of year, air conditioning! The hotel dates back to the turn of the century, 20th that is, and is a mixture of old and new, very well done. It has been in the same family since the early 1900's and you can see the grandfather in the lobby with a brand-new baby in his arms, very typically Italian. For us it is our oasis of peace and tranquility.

Room Tip: If you need air conditioning be sure to ask specifically because some rooms do not have it.

I loved this hotel. We had a spectacular view from our room, the gardens are gorgeous and the location is the best in Lugano lake. Room was really nice, quite spacious and well in line with the decorations in other spaces around the building. The food was all brillian I suggest Linguine alle vongole:amazing!!.The hotel offers every guest the comfort and ease of life once reserved for nobility.
