Went as part of a tour group. The location is pretty amazing with a classic view of the drakensburg mountains. The service is top notch and so was their attention to details. Some aspects of the hotel needs upgrading but no bother really.
George, the owner needs special mention. He freely mingled with us and was great company. On mentioning that we were a few vegetarians in the group ,he instructed the chef to rustle up something special for us to remind us of home.
The property itself is very well kept and was a pleasure to stroll around in. A prayer room with a gorgeous view needs special mention.A really wonderful stay in all.

Room Tip: Rooms with a view of the mountains ..

We stayed 2 nights with our group and had a lovely time. The place is located at the foothills of the mountains and has amazing views. General Manager George gave a lot of personal attention and was great to spend time with him. Also, must appreciate the staff of the hotel, we had forgotten some items in the safe and they made it a point to inform our group and organised a drop off to out next stop. An amazing commitment and wonderful level of service. Thank you George and team.
Since, we were a group with all meals and events arranged, we did not really order any room service. Great place to be! would recommend it.

Room Tip: Ask for mountain view rooms, they have a lovely balcony.

We stayed at Champagne Castle rather than another lodge in the Drakensberg that we have visited on a number of occasions based largely on the glowing reviews on Trip Advisor. I wish I had read the reviews more closely. A number of reviews mentioned service as being a problem; they were being kind.

Every lodge in the Drakensberg has beautiful views. What we have come to look forward to in our stays in the mountains, in addition to the views, is the service and hospitality. The Champagne Castle has some disappointing problems with their activity staff as well as their front desk and dining room staff. For example, the staff guide for the daily hike set such a furious pace that of the eleven guests who set out with him, only two returned with him. The guide for horse back riding had trained his horses to trot when he whistled. The two hour sunset ride we had booked turned out to be an hour plus dash around the mountain where riders simply held on in fear of the next unexpected trot whistle.

I would write these activity staff people off as just fluke experiences. But the front desk and dining staff also just seemed to be tired and grumpy as well. Overall, I came away feeling like the Champagne Castle had gotten too big and was just going through the motions. It did not offer the level of hospitality we've experienced at other lodges.

Room Tip: Get far away from the main lodge so you do not hear staff arrive at 5:30 in the morning.

Having visited this hotel for the past 40 years or so we feel more like family than guests, this is emphasised when you are greeted shortly after arrival by management and by name. Over the years we have seen it grow from a small rather rustic but charming resort into a four (or is it five) star establishment. The accommodation suites are extremely comfortable and well appointed with soft terry towelling bathrobes, small carafe of port wine, satellite TV, comfortable armchairs. We recommend that if possible you book a room with a view as the Drakensberg mountains viewed from your patio or balcony are really outstanding. This is a full board hotel and each meal has a great choice of many dishes chosen from the buffet. Dinners are especially good with at least two roast joints and many alternatives available like stews, ox tail, pasta or vegetarian. On a chilly evening they light a log fire in the two lounges and bar and it is very relaxing to sit chatting or reading in a good atmosphere in lovely deep comfortable arm chairs. We were unfortunate on this visit as the clouds were down low most of the time which spoilt the views but we still managed a few hikes along well marked & signposted tracks to some of our favourite spots. Organised guided hikes are organised each day for those interested. In addition bourse riding, tennis, bowls & table tennis are available so whether you want an activity holiday or a place to chill out in this place has it all. Another of our favourite destinations that we will go out of our way to ensure that we can visit them. Ancient Travellers

My husband and I stayed in the hotel for 2 nights during mid-week. We had a room with a mountain view. Everything was excellent from arrival to departure and we enjoyed every minute of our stay. Our stay was a spur-of-the-moment decision while driving home from the KZN coast. Our booking was handelled efficiently as was our check-in. The room was very spacious with a lovely balcony overlooking the majestic mountains. The decor is tastefully and beautifully done.

The accomodation includes breakfast, lunch and dinner and all the meals are actually feasts. The food is well prepared, delicious and beautifully presented. It is served buffet-style and every meal was a gastronomical experience.

The hotel as well as the gardens are modern, neat and well kept. We also loved the aviary.

Our stay was special and memorable and we will definitely visit this hotel again. The excellent service is commendable. Thank you to the management and staff for a wonderful stay!

This hotel is all about location, location, location! The views are quite simply stunning. Rooms are very comfortable and the staff very friendly and helpful. Although not a fan of buffet style meals, the quality was generally very good. The very reasonable rates are fully inclusive of room, breakfast, lunch, dinner, morning coffee and afternoon tea.
We stayed for 3 nights and would have liked to stay longer. It can be a bit of a trek to get to, but there is plenty in the area of the Drakensberg Mountains to keep most people amused.
