On previous visits to Puerto we have walked past this restaurant and thought it was just a small bar for the locals, how wrong we were. The staff, atmosphere and food were all fantastic and we will certainly be calling again in December. Excellent value for money.

After reading other reviews of La Chalana, my boyfriend and I wandered over to the old town one evening to make a reservation for Friday night paella. I tried to ask the hostess in Spanish, but it turns out she speaks very good English (phew!). She seemed a little amused that we would book in advance, but since that's what other reviewers had recommended we thought we better had!

When we returned for our reservation (a bit late - we couldn't find a cashpoint nearby) at 8.30pm we understood her amusement - the restaurant was empty. It stayed that way until after 10pm when we left - the bar was busy but no one seemed to be eating. The hostess seemed to be doing everything short of actually cooking the food - she greeted people outside, served at the bar and waited on our table. I don't know how she managed it all without looking in the least bit flustered - she even took the time to advise us which wine we should try. We chose a local Lanzarote one but sadly the name escapes me. I should've bought an extra bottle to take home!

The seafood paella itself was lovely - beautifully presented with everything perfectly cooked - no stretchy squid, squishy rice or chewy fish here. Exactly how a paella should be.

The restaurant is beautiful - it has a nautical feel with sea-blue walls and ropes, model ships and nets for decoration. Soft lighting from lamps and fairy lights make it feel more intimate and even when the bar is busy the sound doesn't really carry into the dining area. We couldn't understand why we were the only ones eating. If you're going to Puerto Del Carmen you really should try La Chalana.

Eat here on regular basis but must rave about the paella we had recently. Needs to be ordered in advance with a reservation but the extra preparation is well worth it. Served beautifully it really sets the scene for the flavour sensation that follows

This is one of the best places in Puerto Del Carmen if you want proper Spanish food. This is a little gem in the harbour area of the Old Town. The staff were excellent and it was service with a smile, helpful . The food is wonderful. Just the right size portions and the Spanish omelette was excellent. The mussels and canaries potatoes with mojo sauce is the best I have tasted on the island. The bar was filled with locals and that tells the story. We will return on the Friday evening for live music Spanish style.
