Luz y Mar Apartments
Ranked #49 of 91 Hotels in Puerto Del Carmen
Reviewed 4 October 2013 via mobile

My husband and I have recently returned from a 10 night stay at the Luz Y Mar apartments.

We stayed in upper apartment, No.21. The 1 bedroom apartments are a great size. Good open plan kitchen/lounge area. Kitchen had fridge/kettle/toaster/4ring electric hob and various cooking utensils, more than adequate for putting together snacks and simple meals. Bathroom, again was a good size, complete with bath and over bath shower. Large double bedroom with twin beds, dressing table, bedside table and large wardrobe. (I think we were lucky as we had two proper thick mattresses on our beds. Others we spoke to complained of rather thin, campbed-like mattresses!) The balcony was a great size, overlooking the pool and caught the sun all day and was complete with patio table & 2 chairs. There was also a concertina style clothes dryer/airer attached to the wall. The apartment was cleaned twice during our 10nite stay and towels/linen were changed both times.

The complex is very quiet (if you're looking for 18-30's holiday, this is not the place for you!) There is a pool bar and its usually open about 10/11am until about 10pm, but if there are a few of you there in the evening, Liam will keep the drinks flowing (I think Liam maybe leaving, so he will be sorely missed!)

Apartments are in a great location, between the Old Town and New Town of Puerto Del Carmen. Right outside the apartments are a couple of supermarkets and a Spar! All very reasonably priced. (I will not be taking any toiletries next time as I'll just buy everything I need when I get there.)
There are also a couple of very good restaurants just outside, namely, O'Churassco and Blairs. (My husband said the Duck in Blairs was the best he'd ever had and I totally recommend the steak at O'Churassco!)

Head down the hill and at the roundabout turn left to go to the New Town/Strip/beach. Its a typical 'Strip'. Lots of bars/restaurants/souveneir shops and 'touts' trying to drag you in every couple of steps. We visited it once, that was enough! The beach was lovely. Clean, wide and gently shelving. There appeared to be lots of different watersports to try.

If you go straight through at the roundabout, on your left you will see The Drunken Monkey bar. Pop in and say "Hi" to Flo. Lovely French lady who speaks perfect English. She does ice cold beers, great cocktails and very large spirit measures!! Follow the road down and you're in the Old Town. Keep going and you'll find yourself at the harbour area. Lots of lovely restaurants overlooking the sea. We liked Oceano, for a cold beer and light snack and just watch the world go by. You can get the Watertaxi from the harbour, round to Puerto Calero. Takes about 15 mins and only €10 each return. Calero has a beautiful marina and lots of designer shops, so if shopping is your thing, its definitely worth a visit!

Also worth a visit is Fuertuventura. Ferries leave regularly from Playa Blanca and are only €23pp rtn. The bus from Puerto Del Carmen to Playa Blanca runs every 20 mins (you get it outside the Biosfera Shopping Centre at the roundabout) and is about €6 pp each way, however, as we went with a couple of girls who were staying at the apartments and fancied the trip too, we got a taxi which was €30 inc tip, and took about 20-25mins.

This was our first time in Lanzarote and loved it so much we've already booked to go back and stay at Luz Y Mar in Feb '14.

I've rated it 4/5 as the apartments are a little tired looking and could do with a wee spruce up, but that is the only negative in my opinion.

My husband and I totally recommend the Luz Y Mar Apartments and the resort of Puerto Del Carmen for a relaxed, chilled out holiday.

Room Tip: overall room average, maybe a bit quieter around other side.

Me and my husband stayed at the Luz y Mar Apartments in Puerto del Carmen from the 4th September for 1week self catering. Found the holiday on travel republic for just over £400 for 2 of us. Bargain as we were looking for something cheap and cheerful. We only took hand luggage each as we thought we would just buy all essentials we needed at a local supermarket (Ryanair wanted £70 per case pp - no chance!). Best thing we did as there was a Spar supermarket literally over the road for everything you need. I never seem to travel light but I can ensure you I had plenty of room for everything I needed which shocked even me!

Flight was rushed which is the norm for Ryanair but you get what you pay for. Added transfers when booked holiday which was just under £18 for 2 of us return which seemed reasonable. Only about 15-20 minutes from airport to apartments.

Arrived at apartments about 1pm. Went straight to reception where they welcomed us and checked us in straight away. Staff were pleasant and gave us all the necessary information we needed. Purchased a safe which cost 2€ per day with a deposit of 6€ which you get back. Additional extras can also be purchased such as hair dryers, fans, etc.

We were allocated apartment 2 which was a ground floor pool view room. I did ask for a 1st floor apartment when booked but this was fine as it opened straight out to pool area. The apartments are basic with sofa seating area with pull out bed. Kitchenette has fridge freezer, 2 ring hob, microwave, pots, pans plates, glassware, toaster and kettle. Didn't use kettle as seemed bit grubby and full of lime scale so just heated bottled water on hob which was fine. Bedroom was 2 single beds which were very uncomfortable. Me and hubby took the pull out mattress and cushion from sofa bed and put on top of beds which helped. Safe is located in wardrobe at bottom which is a bit of back breaker to get to. Bathroom in need of updating and some much needed DIY! Bath had moved and come away from walls and when you showered it moved with you!

Cleaner only came once during our stay so only had towels changed once, would of liked them changed more. Sheets not changed in week but beds where made and floors swept and moped.

Pool area is small but more than enough beds and sunbathing spots for everyone. Was never overcrowded while we were there but don't think resort was fully occupied. Some of the apartments have permanent residents occupying them. There is a pool bar which seemed to open different times and not everyday. Although it seemed nice enough we opted to purchase our drinks and snacks from local spar as it was cheaper. The pool bar seemed to do this too and just put bottled drinks in cold glasses rather then use draft beer/fizzy drinks.

The main strip of Puerto del Carmen (new town) was about 700m from apartment which was all downhill so could be difficult for some to walk to. Plenty of bars to choose from all offering variety of deals and offers. Lots of people trying to get you in their bars but nothing too harassing. We recommend Ruta 66 as had good atmosphere and good offers - 4 bottles Sol beer for 10€, cocktails 5€. Plenty of restaurants to choose from again with different offers - recommend Enjoy Asian Restaurant. Nice tasty meal and reasonably priced. Had a lovely McDonalds after few too many beers too just down road from apartments!

The harbour (old town) was about 500m away, again all down hill. Has some lovely restaurants overlooking the sea. We tried Los Marinas which was nice for seafood. Sangria lovely too!

Best part of our stay was visiting Bozena's restaurant in the old town. It is a polish/Irish restaurant. Food is some of the best food we have ever eaten. So good we went twice! Ribs starter was fabulous as was the sizzling garlic prawns. The zbojnik beef stroganoff served in a potato pancake was fantastic! Atmosphere was beautiful and staff friendly. Bo the owner is so lovely and welcoming. Prices bit on high side but definitely worth it. Look at Bozena's website for menu.

Overall our stay was lovely, few things could of been better such as more clean towels, sturdier bath, some of the outer areas of resort could be cleaner but we still had fab time and may even return next year. If cheap and cheerful is your thing then this place will be right up your street. We have been to 5* resorts but never expected this to be same. If you don't expect 4 or even 3*, you will have great time. These apartments are a great base for getting out and about.

Just back from 2 weeks family holiday, 7 of us in rooms 25 & 26 upstairs and we couldn't have been more pleased.
The apartments were clean and spacious, we only had the maid 3 times during the 2 weeks, but we managed ok!
I think these apartments are fantastic value for money. The pool and surrounding area was kept clean and tidy.
Linda and Liam who ran the poolside bar were extremely friendly and helpful - and they need everybody's support! Everyone enjoyed them being there and the music being played. Their prices were nice and cheap - yet few people seemed to give them any custom.
We had no bug problems, providing NO food left lying anywhere or you will be subject to lots of ants very quickly! The fridge and microwave are the only safe places for open packets!

Room Tip: both 25 and 26 had sun all day til about 7, lovely large balcony overlooking the pool

We found the apartments to be clean and comfortable. beds weren't much better than campbeds sheets clean but very grey (due to brownish water) which tended to make the bathroom appear dingy as well. Spacious and well equipped with good equipment.
Towels changed once mid week but bed wasn't changed during our 7 night stay.
Pool area could be nicer with pads on sunbeds and a few umbrellas as in July it was very hot.
Beware if you want sunbeds on beach which is a ten minute walk away down hill, as there weren't any during our stay. Apparently a dispute with council!
Good service fro reception, asked for extra pillows and a light to be fixed, both sorted within hours.
Good value for price of these apartments but wouldn't rush to go back.

Room Tip: Room 25 faced sun from mid morning, unless you like to fry avoid rooms around this number. Downstai...

You really cannot complain about £150 a week for a clean and pleasant one bedroom apartment (the sofa doubles as a bed) overlooking a very pretty pool. Coconut palms sway in the breeze and are home to sparrows and house martins who all line up chirping on the balcony every day, asking for a bit of bread, it was enchanting. The apartments in June are spacious, cool and airy with TV`s that work, fridge, toaster and so on. I was very pleased. The TV is expensive so pull the plug out when you are not watching it as standby will eat up your euros. We used about 2 - 3 during an evening if we watched anything. Luz Y Mar is situated at the top of the hill sloping fairly gently down to the old town and harbour but a bit of a trek coming back up! There are supermarkets very close by which is so convenient and lots of eateries, none of which were terribly expensive. There`s a little beach to the left of the harbour, a market every Sunday (lovely, ice cold lager being served with traditional Tapas, 1 euro each, very good,) and lots of Irish pubs. When we were there it was incredibly quiet which was lovely and I had the pool to myself most of the time, which is my idea of heaven. We bussed it into the capital Arecife (1 euro 30) which is a pretty journey along the coast. Arecife is a quite large town and if you go to Kings High Street you will find lots of designer shops. We ate at Lemon, at the harbour. We chose paella, which was moderately good but not brilliant.

The coast line is very pretty so we took a waterbus to the port of Puerto Calero which is where the real money is in Lanzarote, boy, some of the yachts at the marina were the size of my house! On the way the captain took us away from the shore because he thought he had spotted a whale. To our huge surprise and total delight, within minutes we were surrounded by about 100 dolphin, chasing a huge shoal of sardines. As if this weren`t wonderful spectacle enough, there then appeared not three but four HUGE sperm whale, three adults and a baby, I found it so moving to witness this once in a lifetime display of whales, water spraying us from their blow holes, tears of joy ran down my cheeks, it was incredibly moving and I shall never forget it. We paid just 10 euro`s for this magnificent experience. Some people pay hundreds and never see a thing, thank you Lord!

We ate at a fantastic restaurant there, called Wave, just a few minutes walk from the quay. i had tagliatelle with enormous and very fresh and juicy king prawns, served in a lime and mint sauce. it was heavenly and a snip at only 12 euros. I would HIGHLY recommend Wave, very classy.

We did a day trip around the northern part of the island and visited caves (most impressive) and a cactus garden which is really well worth a walk around with over a thousand different varieties of cactus some extremely large and impressive, from all over the world. I thought the food when we stopped for lunch was dreadful, the guide said we would taste something really different, we didn`t. It was chips and salad, cold lentil soup, chicken, claggy rice and something indescribable in batter that possibly used to be fish. A small niggle.

The weather was hot, around ninety, but breezy which is great if like me, you enjoy walking although if you don`t, taxi`s are frequent and cheap.

A couple of extracts from my Facebook page.....

12:55. Ola! It is really pretty here in Puerto del Carmen, I am enjoying exploring the old and new bits of the town, it is incredibly hilly so I shall have legs like a muscleman. It is also a centre for diving so there are many bewetsuited people sloshing around all over the shop. Refreshingly, the beach is not full of naked women, which always feels rather surreal to me, but in any event, the shore is littered with volcanic rocks which threaten to slice yer toes so I am sticking to the pool. Food is lovely, lots of fresh produce, I am eating enough (and drinking enough) for 2 people. Hah! xxxxxxx

We are ferrying over to another island today, it is baking hot and I am extremely brown. Its a hard life, sigh..... When I walk past shop windows, I am struck by how very much I resemble a biscuit barrel on legs..... xxxxx

I love the Canaries, cheap and cheerful and pretty and lovely. I`d go back to Luz Y Mar again, just not in August when it is packed and VERY hot, there is no air conditioning at the aprtments.. I must just mention the cleaner, she looked like Patty and Selma from the Simpsons and was a right old battle axe. We tipped her 10 euros and she still moaned at us in Spanish and clanked around noisily and turfed us out 20 minutes before we needed to go. Miserable git! Hah!

Room Tip: Only two stories so all rooms are easily accessible and most of them overlook the pool.

Another great stay at Luz y Mar. We stayed here during the week of the Ironman, Even though it was at full capacity the pool was nice and quiet. Big Thank you to Liam at the pool bar who looked after us all week, really good value for money and always kept us going with his ice cold beers and good food and sun tan lotion. Rooms are basic and clean, for two guys not spending much time in there, they were perfect! Also a thank you to Josune with an easy booking direct with apartments. Thanks and see you in the future! Gareth, Craig, Terry

Room Tip: As for a bottom floor room, Ideal for the pool and the bar.
