Myself and my partner have just returned from a stay for one week in Luz Y Mar. If I had written this review on Monday last, two days into our stay, I would have given it 4 stars as everything was fine. However.... this was not our experience for the rest of the week. We arrived (closed reception) and picked up our keys in a nearby pub. The apartment was basic but clean. There were ants in the bathroom. The beds were very uncomfortable but we were happy enough. We spent the mornings having breakfast on the small terrace outside our apartment overlooking a freezing pool. We would go for a walk in the afternoons and return for some downtime in the sunshine reading by the pool before heading out for the evening. We checked in on the Monday after visiting a closed reception several times and they were friendly enough.
On the third day, the pool bar opened.... and this was the downfall of Luz Y Mar. Firstly, our apartment was very close to the pool bar, which blared (I MEAN BLARED) a radio station called Gold, which was basically 20 songs from Barry Manilow to Rod Stewart on CONSTANT rotation. Each of their selection of 20 songs were played at least twice a day. It was so unsuited to holiday listening, and so utterly nose-bleed inducingly loud. I understand there is an older demographic in Lanzarote this time of year - but no one I could see was listening to the music. Many people wore headphones (us included) to drown out the loudness. It made it very hard to read and relax - especially as there were so few people it was meant to "entertain" (daily approx 5-8) and most were trying to drown it out.
Secondly, the pool bar man (and occasionally his mate) hung around drinking and smoking outside the bar day in, day out. The pool bar man looked utterly bored ALL of the time and did a lot of drinking, or pacing back and forth with a fag outside our apartment making us feel really uneasy. I know some people mentioned he was helpful with tours - I think he is paid a commission as he did try to convince us to take a tour. We didnt take it and I think he was annoyed.
A group of very loud tourists moved in next door to us about mid-week and roared and screamed all night until 8am for two nights running which meant we didnt sleep a wink.
Finally, AND THIS IS THE WORST PART!!! On our check out day, we stayed in the apartment until about 12.30 and let the cleaner in. We had all our stuff packed but our bus wasnt picking us up until 3pm, so we went for some lunch. On our return the pool bar man shouted at us that we should have checked out at 12 noon and that we needed to get out - he was INCREDIBLY rude. We had not been verbally told on our check-in that there was a restriction on check out. Im not sure if it was in the fine print but it wasnt anywhere obvious - our bad if it was but we didnt know as it had never been said to us. Either way, when the cleaners arrived at 12.30 perhaps they could have mentioned this before we left. Instead, they THREW OUT every single piece of food, bottles of wine and beer, all our toiletries, sunscreen, toothpaste, shower sponge, deodorant and anything else we had lying around. They piled up my change of clothes I had ready on top of my boyfriend's bag and threw all our stuff on the couch that they deemed was not to be thrown away.
I went directly to reception to complain about how much of our stuff had been discarded (that we had intended to bring with us) and the attitude of the pool bar man, but of course, it was closed as it remained perpetually during our stay aside from once when we officially checked in with our passports.
I plan to follow up with them directly but it would have been nice to have had any representative to complain to about the noise and the problem with our check out there and then.
I'm really not a diva or tough to please and had it not been for the noise and this incident on check out I would have been writing that this is good value and you get what you pay for. Unfortunately I could never recommend this place to anyone looking for a relaxing holiday.
