My husband and I have just returned from a lovely week away to the Riu Hotel Paraiso. We were allocated a room across the bridge but having read previous reviews this did not bother us. It really isn't a very long walk. On arrival we were given two big bottles of water and our cases were taken to our room for us. We arrived around 9.30pm and the hotel staff laid on a cold supper for us which we really appreciated.
The room was a lovely size, very clean and lovely bathroom too. My only criticism is the hair dryer which is a bit like the ones you find at swimming pools, I suggest that you take your own one. We were quite pleased that there were a few TV channels in English and we were able to watch a couple of films.
There are pools in both parts of the hotel and we tended to stick to the pool nearest to our room as it was quieter. There were always sunbeds available.
As it has been mentioned in other reviews the food could be a little samey but as we were only there off a week it didn't bother us too much. The tables for two are quite close together and this can feel a bit like a canteen. We ate at both the Mexican and Asian restaurants and the food was lovely. It definitely helped to break up the days at the main restaurant.
There is a wifi machine in the main reception and we purchased a weeks connection for €20. Unfortunately we could only connect to the wifi when we were in the main reception so it was a bit useless really. I think it should be made clear that you will not receive any signal in the rooms across the bridge as we would not have bothered had we known this.
With the room key we were given a key to the entrance on the main road which is across the road from the beach. The beach was lovely and the water was very clear.
Along this main road is the bus stop and we went to Puerto del Carmen a couple of times. It's quite a quick journey and only costs €1.35 each so a bargain. There are some nice shops including several designer type shops and Zara. If you like shopping it is worth a wander. We tried to go to Puerto Calero twice. The first time we missed the bus stop for Puerto Calero and the next stop was in Playa Blanca which is about another 30/40mins away! The second time we tried was a Saturday and we did not realise that the buses only came once an hour! I would recommend asking the travel rep for the bus times to avoid unnecessary waiting. We waited for a long time and when the bus came it was full and the bus did not stop which was a little frustrating. We decided to go into Puerto del Carmen again rather than wait another hour for the next bus. Be warned that the buses only come every 2 hours on a Sunday! It definitely seems better to go during the week rather than the weekend
Overall we really enjoyed our week away. This was the first time we had stayed at Riu hotel and we would definitely consider another Riu hotel. This was also the first time we have been to Lanzarote and it was lovely. The weather was just right, hot and sunny but with a breeze to keep you cool. We will definitely be going back.
