“Great, really enjoyed this hotel”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 May 2009

Me and my partner went in Oct 08 and found these apartments very good, clean and enjoyable.
The 2 pools and jacuzzi where great, the rooms where really clean and reception was helpful.
There are many activities to do like tennis, football, rent push bikes and much more.
A few other English people around but alot where germans, spanish etc. There is a bar to get pool drinks and a supermarket in the apartments.
I would recommend this hotel for couples and families with older childern (out of push chairs) as the hotel is on a hill and once inside the complex a few more slopes.
Would say it is not ideal for disabled / wheelchaired people if you want to leave the hotel.
There is a short cut to the centre and beach which is a 5-10 mins walk away but that has steps and is run down.
We did have a few bad points but doesn't everywhere.
Overall really enjoyed and would stay again.

My wife and I have just returned from the Sol Morromar in Matagorda on the island of Lanzarote. We spent one week there, from March 19th to 26th 2009

Like many people we were worried about our decision, after reading many negative comments on this site, as to if we had made the right choice. The main problem, as discussed by many reviews, was the poor food at the complex. I am writing this review, which I hope, will ease the concerns of other people who have booked the Sol Morromar and will shortly be off on their holiday to this complex.

To start with, the apartments were originally built as self catering apartments and the restaurant facilities were added at a later date. This I believe was due to the fact that food shopping in Matagorda is limited. There is a small supermarket on site with a limited range of goods and a larger supermarket can be found at the shopping centre, which is about a 5 minute walk towards the beach.

We booked our holiday with Thomas Cook and paid £340 each. This included in-flight meals and transfer to and from the airport. Considering a large part of the cost goes towards the airfare, we thought this was a reasonable price to pay. Lanzarote is a around a four hour journey from all UK airports. Both outbound and inbound flights ran to schedule and we had no problems with check-in at either end.

Being a realist, at the price we paid, we do not expect Anthony Worrall Thompson to come whizzing out of the kitchen with gourmet delights in hand. That said we do expect the food to be of a reasonable quality. As stated above, the main complaint from many visitors to the Sol Morromar was the food. During our stay we found the food to be reasonable if somewhat repetitive. It’s not the best we have experienced but neither of us suffered from any complaint and never starved!

I understand that improvements have been made over the past two months and further changes are in the pipeline. The deserts leave very little to the imagination and this I found to be the poorest area. Ice cream, jelly and sponge cake was the norm. Breakfast was the best, but not the full range one expects. For instance, if bacon is on that day – you won’t find sausages and vice-versa. Fried eggs one day and scrambled the next.

The “restaurant” looks more like a staff canteen and the bar area looks like something you would find in a youth club. Entertainment is poor, but we never stayed to enjoy the delights! All this is housed in one big area and just sectioned off from each other. All that said you soon get into the swing of things and it never spoilt out holiday one bit. The staff we’re pleasant and try hard to please.

The Sol Morromar is only a short ride from the airport and we paid £20 each for our coach transfers, which I thought was a bit steep! It’s worth mentioning that there are plenty of taxis at the airport and with hindsight this would have been a better choice as the fare is approximately 8 euro’s each way and therefore saving us £24 against the coach transfer cost. All taxis are metered and maintained in good order. Mercedes being the most used vehicle of choice.

Most tour operators to the Sol Morromar offer three options of stay. Self Catering, Half Board and Full Board. I would not recommend the Self Catering option for the reason I stated above. The apartments provide a two-ring electric hob, fridge and, sink, along with cups, plates, knife’s and forks etc. There is no charge for using these appliances – it’s all covered in the holiday price. However, they DO NOT provide an electric kettle or hairdryer. These can be rented from reception. The cost of the kettle is 5 euro’s for a week and you will get a full refund of this on return. A hairdryer will cost 10 euro’s for the week, with a 5 euro return deposit. A safe is also available for 18 euro’s for a week, with 6 euro’s returned on departure.

We found the apartments to be clean and in good order and the layout of the complex gives it a village appeal. Room service was three times a week and the maids were very pleasant. There are two swimming pools to choose from and the main pool has a large bar area. We found them to be clean and safe. They are cleaned each morning.
With a weak pound, you might as well say the exchange rate is one for one and therefore things will appear expensive. Example: - £2.39 for a small packet of chocolate biscuits. Beer is around £3 a pint, but there are cheaper if you look around.

We found Matagorda to be a very clean, tidy and quiet place. I think I saw only two pieces of graffiti in all. It is mainly a residential area consisting of one and two story apartments. The main resort is Puerto Del Carmen and this is about 4.5 kilometres away. You can walk it all along the seafront, which we did on more than one occasion. A comfortable walk would take around 45 minutes and its promenade all the way. Girls going out on the town and wearing their high-heels might not be fit to dance once they get there! There is a taxi rank at the back of the hotel and a ride into Puerto Del Carmen will cost you around 4-5 euro’s and take 5-6 minutes. There is never a problem in getting a taxi at either end as there are always plenty around. The back gate which leads to the taxi rank is locked from 8pm to 8 am – for security reasons – but it’s no big deal to walk around the corner to the rank.

I would not recommend this resort to young people who are looking for the nightlife – it’s not there! A taxi to Puerto Del Carmen is your best bet.

For those of you who are visiting the Island for the first time, please take note! Although the Canary Islands form a part of Spain, they are not part of the EU and therefore you need to be aware of the allowance of drink and cigarettes you are allowed to bring back.

Thank you for taking the time to read my review and I hope you make the best of your holiday and enjoy your stay.

Immaculately clean. Beds changed alternate days. Bathroom spotless. Curtesy toiletries provided. Hair dryers, kettles etc on request. Considering the numbers catered for they do an excellent job. Yes food can get a bit cool but it was varied, well cooked and clean. The dining room staff were very efficient but also very nice. The pools were lovely. The heated pool was not like a nasty hot local swimming pool. The last week in Feb was the coldest for years so everywhere was a bit chilly. The other pool, YES 2 POOLS!, was lovely. The walk to the sea was easy and took just a few minutes. The green parrots put in an appearance. We were amazed at how beautifully clean and unspoilt Lanzarote is. You can get to most places by the excellent & cheap bus service. Bikes can be hired or you can walk safely along miles of promenades. We would certainly go back.

I have been to Lanzarote on numerous occassions and have stayed in some lovely self catering apts over the years but this is not one of them. We were given a ground floor apt which we had requested with a pool view. The "view" was if you leaned out far enough over the balcony and looked in between the trees. It was dark & depressing. The bed linen was grubby looking and the sheets on my sons fold up bed just looked plain dirty. We requested a change of apt to one with a sea view and we were charged an extra €5 per day for the privilege. The new apt was a bit better as it was brighter and airier but again the sheets looked grubby and felt damp. There is supposed to be a heated pool with integrated childrens pool - there is a pool with a shallow end but in no way could it be described as heated - baltic maybe. There is a gym which my husband tried to use on 3 occasions and every time it was closed - we saw it open once.We were told the apt is located 300 metres from the beach which is right what they fail to mention is that its up a very steep hill - we are in our early 30s and are reasonably fit but pushing a buggy up it every day was a nightmare. You have to rent the basics like a kettle and a toaster which is no great hardship but I have stayed in much cheaper apts in lanzarote and they have provided such items which just makes your stay a little easier especially travelling with a young child. As we were self catering we didnt bother eating in the restaurant as there is so many lovely restaurants in Matagorda and I had read previous reviews of it. All in all if I was given a free holiday in these apts I would have to say no its just not worth it.

We've been to Lanzarote several times before but never all inclusive and after this holiday we will definitely return and go all inclusive again. It was great value for money. Although we were all inclusive our apartment stil had a kitchen with fridge, cups & sacuers, cutlery etc. We did know to bring our own kettle and hair dryer with us but you can get them from reception if you wish. The food was buffet style in the restuarant and, as per previous reviews, was not piping hot but they did provide 2 microwaves if you wanted to heat it up. We were well situated overlooking one of the pools with a sea view from the terrace. The apartment was quite spacious compared to previous ones we've had in Puerto del Carmen. If you wanted the remote for the TV you had to pay a desposit at Reception. They provided extra pillos and blankets on request and were very accommodating and friendly. The room was cleaned 5 days out of 7 and we never saw any bugs while we were there. The soft drinks included Coca Cola and Sprite but the alcoholic drinks were local ones so it was local lager, sangria, liquors etc. and the portions were very generous and you could have as much as you wanted on the all inclusive basis so it's worth the extra you pay up front.

Spent one week at this hotel,19feb-26, and was worried having read the reviews before we went but was pleasantly suprised the grounds were beautifull and the apartment was very clean, with fresh towels and beds changed three times. the food was much better than the reviews and we were told that the caterers had changed that week, the food wasn't always hot but we found plenty to choose from , the meat and fish was always cooked well, and there was lots of different salads. the area is quite good for a peaceful holiday but with pubs and entertainment in the centre. We would go there again.

We went to this hotel on a self catering basis on advise on here! excellent advise! Beautiful hotel, spacious apartments, very clean, and the two pools were perfectly posistioned! We stayed here from 26th Feb - 5th March 2009! obviously it was not too busy at this time of the year ! But a number of people did moan about the food! Which of course didn't apply to us! This Hotel is very close to Matagorda Centre, which is right on a golden sand beach! (Unsual for Canary Isles} You must call at the 'Funny Farm' Pub run by a British Family! Some people might know Tony Russell off the club curcuits in Britain? My advise is don't hire a car for more than 3 days! We hired one for 3 days at a total cost of 55euros! very cheap! But we went around the whole island over twice!
Couldn't fault the Hotel or resort and will be going back!!!
