“Great location, needs better mattresses!!”
Reviewed 3 August 2012

Firstly the location is excellent, handy for the beach (a hop, skip and jump away - well almost!!), shops and restaurants, taxis and buses. It's quite quiet in Matagorda which suited us just fine. The superior bungalow we were in (block 2, number 15) was clean, spacious, had a garden with sun loungers, a patio with a table and chairs and was situated right beside one of the pools in the complex with a snack bar beside it (we didn't use this as we were self catering). I've put up a photograph of the details of cleaning etc for Thomson customers. The kitchen was perfectly equipped for a two week holiday although the cooker only had two rings and you couldn't get the two largest pots on at once!! You'll also need a cork screw if you're drinking wine without a screw top as there wasn't one supplied. As we had a superior bungalow we had air conditioning but surprisingly only in bedroom? This wasn't really a problem though as there was a lovely breeze throughout the day and if you opened the windows and the back door the living area was kept lovely and cool. The only reason I gave this bungalow four stars is because of the beds!! The mattresses were the hardest things ever (and I like a firm mattress). I asked at reception if they could provide less firm ones only to be told these were all they had and the reason they were so hard was because they were new and hadn't been broken in!! In the end we put the padded covers from the sun loungers on top of the mattress on the bed which made all the difference. A taxi to Puerto Del Carmen cost us 6 euros including a tip and to Playa Honda was 8 euros. You could take a leisurely walk to Playa Honda following the promenade route round the airport in about 45 minutes but the walk to the centre of Puerto Del Carmen will take a while longer so I'd advise you to take the bus which costs about 2 euros one way. The tour company Customer Travel provides reasonably priced tours around the island and they do a tour to Teguise market which only costs 4 euros per person which is just as cheap as getting the public bus. The public bus can be found at the front of the Jameos Hotel which is a 10 minute walk away. Rancho Texas is definitely worth a visit and take your swim gear, the water park area is a good place to chill though there aren't any rides just a pool and kiddies play area. For a great meal walk along the beachfront to the Caballito de Mar restaurant, it's very reasonably priced, the staff are lovely and the food is delicious. For the money we paid this was a fab location and the bungalow was ideal for us.

Just returned from another lovely holiday, stayed in block 8 by the pool, very clean and well maintained. The staff are very polite and courteous. The food was good, and pool bar service was run well.
However, we had a major leak in the bathroom during the night and had no choice but to use ALL our towels and some bed sheets to soak it up as it was seeping throughout the bungalow. It would be sensible i would have thought for the accommodation to have a mop and bucket, but never mind. The leak was fixed the next day, but the cleaner who came in to do her job after the leak was fixed, was very rude and abrupt and spoke to me and my mum (who is 71yrs of age) aggressively, shouting in spanish and pointing her finger at us, as 2 hand towels were missing when she was replacing the wet ones. We tried to explain that the workmen had thrown them outside and she then proceeded to accuse my children of taking them. This behaviour did leave us feeling intimidated and upset for the duration of our holiday, she's obviously in the wrong job dealing with the public!!!! None of the other staff are like that.
On the plus side, we hope to go back to las gaviotas, it's great value for money and very relaxing.

These bungalows are in the perfect location, close to the beach, shops and restaurants. We stayed for 10 nights and our bungalow was cleaned everyday apart from Sunday. They are spacious and provide all that you need for your stay. The staff were great, they were very helpful and friendly. The kitchen was basic but well enough equipped for us to make breakfast and lunch. We ate out every night and the food was fantastic, there is great variety and good value for money. I would highly recommend the Japanese restaurant it was the best meal we had and it was fantastic. I would recommend going for the self catering option as the food is so good, as are the supermarkets. Those on all inclusive were complaining about the food.

The airport is close and you do hear the planes, they are not too intrusive but you will notice them.

The area itself is great, we walked for miles each night and we were not bothered by anyone and felt very safe.

Brief summary:
A good, relaxing, basic break to a fantastic place!

Stayed in block 8, was next door to family members, as requested. Excellent location, Very clean bungalow, staff very nice, Excellent value for money and definately suitable for children. Ate meals out every evening, great variety within 3-4 minute walk from bungalows. Couldnt have asked for better. Definately will stay there again and have reccommended these bungalows to friends. €10 in taxi from airport. €4 to Rancho Texas. €5 in taxi to old town. Stayed in Puerto Del Carmen 2 years ago and I would never stay there again. Matagorda alot more friendlier, cheaper, and quieter.

Room Tip: We stayed in 34 & 35 Block 8. Excellent location when you have children.

We arrived in the evening of the 1st July, were greeted by a friendly member of staff, signed us in and gave us a rundown. He seemed quite flattered that this was our 4th time in Lanzarote!
The gentleman gave us a map of the complex and a set of directions to our superior bungalow.

We set off to find it and found it very difficult, there is no signage and the numbers on the bungalows were very obscure, took about 3 wrong turns. This was a common theme when people arrived, lots passed our bungalow looking lost and headed back.

The bungalow itself was pleasant and relatively well equipped, it lacked an oven but did have a hob and microwave.

There was a sofa in the living area, a couple of bar stools and an LCD TV, can't say much about the channel selection as we used radio.

The bathroom was well equipped, hairdryer etc. Grouting was brown and the toilet needed a good scrub, but for the low price we paid it was a minor thing. My only moan is the hot water ran out very quickly, but I like long showers!

The bedroom was air conditioned (only in superior apartments) but apart from being a cool escape from the sun, wasn't really used. At night there's sufficient breeze to keep a comfortable temperature. It had to be activated initially with a key switch by a technician, he then set it to 20 degrees with a remote control and advised us that it auto cuts out after two hours, the remote wasn't left with us which was a bit annoying as we couldn't adjust the temperature, or turn it off! Once it auto cuts off, you just press a switch to turn back on.

This leads me onto the patio, it was sun soaked for most of the day and had two sunbeds, along with table and chairs. Only snag was lack of a parasol, which meant to get out of the sun you had to go inside.

Overall, it was a pleasant stay and I would stay again.

I stayed here for 1 weeks all inclusive with just my wife and I. We stayed in a superior room (block 2) and it was fine for what we wanted i.e a quiet break in a relaxing environment. Being able to get out of bed and sit on your own sunbed in a small garden area was just how we imagined it. Room had free aircon but had to pay for the safe. The reception staff were fine and the restaurant staff were great (particularly short lady). The food was reasonable for a 2 star. Bar arrangements were a bit odd as had to go through restaraunt to get a drink in the evening but once we realised how the system worked it was fine. Had a look at the non superior blocks and they were not as nicely set out as the superior ones and pool was much more crowded. You have to leave your room at 12.00 on the day of departure and at that point all inclusive services stop - this is odd and can leave you in limbo. I've never experienced this before and thomson should make this clearer - for the sake of half a days food/drink I think this policy lets down the holiday and this is why I rated as 3 out of 5 rather than 4 out of 5.

Room Tip: Block 2. Go for a superior room the small extra cost is well worth it
