Hotel Java
Ranked #8 of 78 Hotels in Playa de Palma
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 30 July 2013

If you are searching for a place far from the big crowd, Java is the best place to be!
Java is a family hotel and during our stay we could see families with small kids and seniors.

Location:
Java is in a quiet area located at Ballermann 14 and 8min by bus from the Airport (costs €2,50 and stops right in front of the hotel) and 10min from Palma (also by bus). It's 20min walking from Ballermann 5, where you'll find Bierstrasse and MegaArena.
Java is 2min from the beach and has an exclusive path for the guess to the beach, which has a great piece of sand in that area and small shops/markts all around.
Friendly staff speaking good English.

Hotel:
We read on Tripadvisor that the hotel has just been renewed before summer period and we could see that. The official pictures are exactly what you'll find there. It has big outdoor swimming pool (with beds and sofas), wellness, indoor swimming pool, bar, restaurant and rooms.
They have an entertainment program with local attractions at the Bar in the evenings.

Rooms:
We noticed that all rooms has a balcony and see/swimming pool view.
Luckily we got the room on the first floor that had a balcony and a private area with 2 sunbeds and access to the swimming pool. Next time at Java, we would like the same room (sun until 7pm). The room has airco, minibar and flat TV with many channels in German and only 1 in English.
Bathroom is really good, daily cleaned with a great shower and space enough.

Food:
We chose the halfboard package once the difference from BB wasn't that much.
Breakfast has a big variety of food - specially british breakfast. You can also get fresh fried eggs, omelets, pankaces and toasties. Unfortunately there aren't many options of fruit and any fresh juice.

At dinner they do have a big buffet for all tastes. Food is average and they must find a way to keep the food warm. Although we were 5 nights at the hotel, we only ate twice and both times dinner was cold.

WiFi:
Wifi is paid - which is a pity for such a structured hotel. There are 2 computers at the lobby where you can acess.

Staff:
Staff from the hotel is really friendly and helpful. We could get some great tips with them.

We were at Java in the beginning of July and highly recommend.

Room Tip: If you choose the first floor (between rooms 115 - 128) you'll have an extra balcony with access...

The Java may not look any different from the other surrounding holiday hotels from the outside, but the recently renovated interior and rooms do bring it up to the 4 star standard.
All the rooms have balconies and the top floors have views of the beach and sea. The rooms were practicle and clean. Large walk in showers, complimentary toiletries, flat screen TV with mostly German and Spanish channels with a few English news channels. Direct dial telephone, mini fridge and air con.
The Java has a good size outdoor pool with plenty of sun loungers and shaded chill out areas with good quality wicker/cane furniture and day beds. It also has a small indoor pool and newly equipped gym.
The quality and range of breakfast and dinner food was very good, there was something for everyone even if the hotel does seem to cater more to German/ Nordic guests.
Only 50m from the beach and promenade. This is a quieter area of Palma away from the 18-30 crowd north east of Palma.
An area more suited to families and those wishing for a more relaxing holiday.
Close to the airport, aquarium and harbour.
Many airline staff stayed in the Java, which we took as a good sign, as they would expect a certain standard of accommodation.
Only negative for us was the evening entertainment, which was pitched at the over 60's crowd (flamenco, ballroom dancing)

i stayed at Jave 40yrs ago for 14days on school trip, was great back then, and when missus said she fancied the look of it I was a bit surprised,I shouldn,t have been they have made a great job of modernising the old place. The pool area is great with plenty of rattan beds and sofas. We went B+B with sea view. If I had any complaints the beer was quite expensive for basically a 1/2 pint 7.6 Euros for 2. We were there quite early in season and the cliental was quite elderly and we are not spring chickens. All in ail a good break in the sun though maybe a bit pricey for some people.

Room Tip: If you fancy a few drinks walk 20yds to front and its half the price for double the measure?

The other reviews of this hotel helped us plan our last minute trip to Mallorca in May 2013. We chose Java Hotel because of the proximity to the airport and the beach. As the other reviewers have noted, the City Bus # 21 takes you from the airport to the hotel and back (2.50 Euros each way). It only took 10 minutes each way on the bus, and we were very happy with the ease of getting to and from the hotel. The hotel is very clean, newly renovated (but a little cold and sterile), right on the beach, and right near a bus stop. Those were the things we liked about the hotel. The reception staff were friendly enough, but they didn't really go out of their way to share any additional information about the area. There was one man who worked in the evenings and always helped us with restaurant suggestions, and he was the only reception staff who was quite pleasant. Our room was nice and clean, and we were put on the 5th floor after I emailed and requested the 5th floor or higher. My husband and I didn't really like that we were one of the youngest couples in the hotel though. While it didn't bother us that the hotel caters to German people, we were a little shocked that the average age seemed to be about 70+. I guess that doesn't matter all that much since we didn't spend a lot of time in the hotel anyway. The long stretch of beach out front of the hotel is nice enough, but it got pretty crowded with wild kids drinking sangria out of buckets and celebrating bachelor and bachelorette parties. It was a little too "Spring Break" for our tastes.

My husband and I rented bikes two days in a row and biked to much nicer and more secluded, local beaches away from the partying tourists. We loved the little beaches that we found, and we will come back again, but we will not stay at Java Hotel again because we didn't love the area. Shockingly, there are not many nice restaurants around Java Hotel either! There seem to be a lot of wealthy tourists, but the restaurant offers didn't seem quite to par. We will stay west of Palma next time we visit Mallorca.

All in all, I give this Hotel a three-star rating. They don't offer free wireless or mini bars. Two items that would seem standard for a 4-star Hotel.

Room Tip: If you want a view, Ask for the 5th floor or higher.

We stayed here for just a weekend for our anniversary and were pleasantly surprised upon our arrival (we were just relieved that the hotel refurb was finished to be honest!!). The place has gone through a complete overhaul in terms of modernisation and new decor. The rooms are small but adequate and it’s all very clean and new.

We emailed in advance and asked for a double bed in a room on the 6th floor or above and we got twin beds on the 5th floor... so close but so far!!! ....Pretty annoying really when the hotel was only at about 50% capacity!!! Still, for what we paid it was good value. We were given a fruit plate for our anniversary, but we’d much rather have just had our room requests met!!

Pool and terrace areas are lovely and the drinks prices are really reasonable here. The spa and indoor pool looked lovely – just wish we’d have had time to use them!

The shower in the room was annoying as there was no rack or shelf to put your shower gel/shampoo etc.. on (apart from the floor of the shower!) and you would be scalded intermittently every 30 seconds or so, when using the shower at peak times... I don’t know why this happened but it was disturbing and very unpleasant when it did!

Food was good – the choice was ample and quality was of a high standard. Lots of mature people at this hotel and also many French and German nationals which explains the high standards!! We like mingling with various other nationalities on holiday so this doesn't phase us at all. The location of the hotel is not great and there’s not much about really and as a result, we would not return here BUT we would consider another BG Group hotel elsewhere.

Top Tip – Get the bus to/from the airport and save yourself a fortune! It’s literally only about 3-4 minutes away and is only 2.50 Euro each!!

Room Tip: The higher the floor the better!!!

Booked this hotel one week before visit, read reviews before which were very promising.. Didn't realise the hotel had a complete renovation .. It had only reopened 10 days before our arrival. Was really impressed with very modern decor. Plush comfortable seating areas in lobby. A small indoor pool which looked out onto area with large four poster beds which I think will be used for massage therapy and treatments, when someone is appointed which receptionist stated would be another week.. A very spacious lounge bar which walked out onto pool area, beautiful cane comfy sun beds And ones that could be wheeled around , very handy, no blue ones in sight! Also had upstairs. Sunbed area, with plenty off space, very surprised not a towel on sun beds in mornings!! We were staying half board .. Food was plentiful , so much to choose from all self service ,lethal if your trying to be good , but who is on holiday certainly not me! breakfast choice. cereals fruit, yoghurts,
Hot food was cooked whilst you waited ie omelettes fried eggs, bacon etc, as well as usual scrambled and boiled .. All lovely and hot. there were plenty of people from Germany holland etc as well as many Spanish so cheese ham and other meats were on offer, there was so much more all very well presented , evening meal was the same too many foods to choose from , but again many meats cooked in front of you... Our room although not large was very neat and clean , the bed was really comfortable, beds changed every day as well as towels . Very large Walk in shower for two! With complimentary stuff , had small fridge with complimentary water. Although hotel is situated very near airport, planes were not a problem, no planes at night... If you get local bus no 21 from airport it cost 2.50 euros each ,( we didn't know and we're charged 25 euros by taxi from airport ..rip off) it will take 10 minutes and stops right outside hotel. Other bus no 23 takes you into Palma which again is not very far and only cost 1.30 euro. On the whole we thought the hotel was fantastic very reasonable bar prices 3.60 euros for San Miguel and white wine excellent :) staff were very courteous at all times, food was excellent .We will definitely vist again.. Thankyou

The good:
The buffet was pretty good with somewhat different offerings daily. The service staff in the buffet were also very good, although it is strange to bring the drink bill along with the drinks...but thats not a big issue.
The rooms were modern and the balconies are great.
The upper level rooms seem to have good views of the sea and every room atleast faces the side of the sea.
The location in proximity to the airport is pretty good. It costs between 14-18 Euro for the taxi ride from the airport (we paid 15.75) but I would recommend hopping on bus #21 as the bus stop is right outside the hotel (WHY DIDNT ANYONE ELSE POST THIS ON TRIPADVISOR!)

The bad:
The outdoor pool is freezing cold. Although we were there when the weather was nice (May) the pool was barely used because the water was so cold! I saw 2 people in the pool in 5 days...the pool might be warmer in the summer, but they need to heat it abit for May.
The front counter staff lied about room availability (as we requested a room on the higher floors) saying that there werent any rooms available...the hotel was half full for our entire stay...i dont really understand why they lied about it...but I guess its not a huge deal, but be aware of it. They also were not able to provide much information about the surrounding area and its attractions, but we didnt really press on with asking as there was a line behind us.
The hotel def. caters to Spanish and German tourists...the area surrounding the hotel (pubs and restaurants) is mini Germany (not that its an issue) so there may be language barriers if your looking to meet people.
The hotel crowd is not really suitable for younger travellers. The hotel (in may) was full of elderly couples and families. I would def. not recommend this hotel for single travellers and even young couples may find that they are somewhat out of place here.

Room Tip: Dont take no for an answer when asking for a higher floor room! The front counter staff will try an...
