“it was a bad night but light at the end of the tunnel”
Reviewed 13 February 2014

Have stayed here on many occasions over the last twenty years, this is the first time to leave a review of any kind.
The weather, as we all know has been particular bad, however, last tonight was particularly bad, force 12 at sea, and similar on land. I was travelling up from the South and the journey took an extra 2 hrs. Tried ringing but no answer, found out later they had a power cut.
When I arrived at 10.30pm, I arrived to find the place in darkness apart from a car in the car park, with Steve the landlord waiting in the car park to let me in to my room.
In the morning, Shirley, the lovely lady who makes the breakfasts arrived with a flask of hot water for coffee.
Thanks Steve and Shirley, you did not need to get that extra mile but you did.

We ordered a starter and main course and tea for two. The service was excellent as was the food. The starters were attractively presented. We had pate and scallops, both dishes being full of flavour and tantalising to our palates for the main event Our main courses of sirloin steak chips and homemade onion rings were fantastic. The quality of the beef was outstanding and cooked to perfection - at last a chef who understands how a medium steak should be served. A very enjoyable meal and an Inn we will return to soon.

Enjoyed our stay-food varied, interesting and reasonably priced. Staff pleasant and helpful.
Open fire made a nice addition.
Overuse of exclamation marks on many of the signs.

Our room ( room 5) small and overpriced.

Room Tip: Don't choose room 5.

We were a party of three familys, from different parts of the country, getting together over the xmas period.
Not only did my friend have a slug in his pint.... put all our meals came out separately! It was embarrassing!
Never again!

The buildings, the food, the drinks and the service were all lovely. The decor in both buildings is the perfect match of 'olde worlde' school house with modern finishing touches. The Arms has high ceilings, mirrors and candle-light, exposed brick walls in some places and great, sturdy, comfortable tables & chairs. I can't recommend a stay at this place enough! Although we don't have a dog, it was nice to see that the Arms is dog friendly, too. The landlord welcomed us with a handshake and plenty of warm conversation.

Room Tip: There are only 6 rooms in the wonderful HeadMaster's house, so book early!

Dropped in to this pub on a random jaunt this year, loved it that much we enquired as to room availability for that day, alas it was fully booked which didn't surprise me - the food looked amazing and the building has been lovingly restored.
Booked in for a night a few weeks later and wasn't disappointed by the experience. Food, service, drinks, room, breakfast were all top notch. The rooms are located in a separate building (formerly the Headmaster's house !) and proved to be as lovingly restored as the pub itself. The rooms have bags of class and many original features. I couldn't help notice another review criticising room 5 for being cold etc. This the room we had and I admit it was a little cold, but given the fact it had the original metal windows, this was not a surprise, but a small price to pay to stay in such a room of character. If you want double glazing and generic surroundings please feel free to stay in a Travelodge. In any case the room was supplied with a handknitted wool hot water bottle which was just the thing.

The atmosphere is very nice and well presented. We arrived for a birthday meal, and enjoyed a very good evening, the food was good, the service was good.

There were only two things which let the place down, was the colour of the chefs Whites!! They where Grey!!! Perhaps a bit more Daz might not go amiss!! Also to not even register that we booked a table for a birthday dinner, to turn up to be told in the day we do not take bookings, this is very disturbing, what about if it was a Saturday night?? We would of not been able to eat there!!!
