HOVIMA Santa Maria
Ranked #39 of 59 Hotels in Costa Adeje
Reviewed 31 May 2014

Stayed in Santa Maria mid May, never been to Tenerife before so this was our first experience away. We are in our late 20's and wanted something affordable, close to the beach and in walking distance to a few excursions. Santa Maria definitely is in the perfect location.

LOCATION
When we first arrived at Santa Maria, you have to walk up a slight hill to get to the hotel. At first we thought "god this is going to be annoying" but actually the hotel is neatly tucked away from the road in its own own private complex = less noise. Also views of the sea can be seen from higher levels of the hotel.

It's also really close to the beach and harbour (approx 5mins) with great views of the coast of Costa Adeje and lots of places to eat close by to suit a range of appetites. There's a great bar with live music east from the hotel on the coastline.

THE ROOMS
We stayed on the first floor pool side in a studio apartment and were really happy. The room was really clean- maid comes to clean regularly. The shower is powerful with hot water on demand. The kitchenette came with a hob and microwave and a range of cutlery and plates - perfect if you are self catered all week. room also comes with a seating area and tv - not that you will be using much of either! The balcony is a great size if you want to relax in the evening before venturing out. Couldn't really fault the room. The room does come with a ceiling fan which I think was adequate - you can always sleep with the balcony door open if you do get too hot!

THE POOL
Lovely pool area, plenty of sunbeds, pool is clean and refreshing in the hot sun. Relaxing atmosphere - we spent most of our days lounging by the pool - never really felt the need to head to the beach as the pool are was so nice. The bar area is nice too with music playing and tasty looking food. Though NOTE there is a supermarket at the bottom of the hill (2min walk) where you can buy all sorts for much cheaper.

THE RESTAURANT & FOOD
The restaurant is great, really big and there is an outdoor terrace with slight views of the sea - great sunset too in the evening.
Breakfast is great if you like fresh fruit, yoghurt, cereals, cold meats and pastries. The hot food isn't so great - so don't expect a well cooked breakfast if you like a good English fry up!
The evening meal is really worth the money though - fresh salad bar every night, couldn't stop eating the fresh marinated avocados. Also have a different range of hot food every night - from grilled chicken, to fish and pasta. A few nights a week they have a BBQ on the terrace so fresh cooked sausage and various meats are on offer. 4* for the evening meal I would say. We did half board and was definitely worth it.

THE STAFF
This was probably one of the low points of the hotel, on arrival don't expect a "how are you?" Or "enjoy your holiday". However they are much friendlier by the pool and in the restaurant.

HIGHLIGHTS
Pool area, evening food and the room location. Location of the actual hotel is perfect too.
Excursions - check out the VIP boat trip on a catermaran where you see dolphins and whales in the wild - amazing!

LOW LIGHTS
Unfriendly reception staff, breakfast menu (hot food)

IN SUMMARY
This hotel lives up to its 3 star status. It's in a great location it really is, in walking distance to everything. No hustle and bustle, evening food is really great and the pool area is clean and relaxing. Rooms are Spanish themed and quirky - you want to feel like you are on holiday!
Don't expect a friendly service, but other than that I would say the hotel is pretty faultless. I would definitely recommend to someone and come back again.

Room Tip: First floor, pool side 138 is great! Close to pool and great view side on to see the sea! Wouldn'...

Well located, this is 3* rated and has good facilities. We had a studio room on the 4th floor with really nice views overlooking the pool and to the right of us, the sea. The room was spotlessly clean and was a small apartment. It had 2 single beds, a small kitchen area, a decent sized bathroom, an eating area with a table and bench chairs, a sofa (which I am guessing could be pulled out to make an additional bed) and of course the balcony with table and chairs.
The kitchen area, although small was equipped with toaster, microwave, oven rings, kettle and 2 cupboards, one of which was well stocked with plates, glasses, cutlery etc x 3 of everything. I was most amused to find the security system for the balcony was to put a stick in the runner when you closed the door or left the room. Simple..but effective. There is no air conditioning in the room which would probably make it tough going in the hottest months but there is a small ceiling fan over the beds area.

Check-in was quick and efficient however the lass Sabina Martinez who checked us in managed to do the whole process without a single word or smile until she told us our room number! Not really the welcome you want when you have been on the go for 12 hours...but she was the exception as every other staff member we encountered during our stay was friendly, chatty and more than keen to help answer your question.

A safe can be hired for 18 euro's and this is something I would recommend purely as a common sense measure. Just one swipe card for the room is given which can be a little inconvenient when there are 2 or more of you but I think if we had asked, they would have been happy to provide a new one.

We stayed there on a B & B basis and I have to say the choice of foods at breakfast was really good (even if it was exactly the same every day) and everyone should be able to find something to eat. There is a hot section with bacon, some sort of sausage/hot dog, beans, fried eggs and scrambled eggs and fresh pancakes. There is a section with a choice of about 8 cereals, yoghurt, dried fruit such as prunes and apricots, tinned mixed fruit in bowls, peaches, pears, pineapple and freshly cut kiwi fruit, oranges and grapefruit and also bananas. There is also a section with the cold meats, cheeses, philadelphia cheese, tomatoes and pickles and a pastry section. There is a big assortment of breads and I saw at least 3 toasters scattered around the room. There were 2 coffee machines and 2 juice machines but sometimes, depending on what time you went for breakfast, the queues could be quite long for these. The peak time seems to be about 9am ish onwards. The restaurant is open from 7.30am until 10.00am.
There was always plenty of staff on cleaning tables/replacing plates/cutlery etc but often, one part of the restaurant was shut off by 9am and sometimes it made it difficult to find a table as it was the busiest time..so it didn't make sense to me! This is also the time when you will find it most difficult to find the plates/cutlery you need. No complaints though as we always found something and the staff replace as quick as they can.

The pool is a decent size and seemed to have plenty of sunbeds but perhaps not enough parasols. There are 3 sections to the pool and there is a little bridge in the middle that leads to a bar/restaurant. The main pool is, at the deepest just over 6ft deep. There is a separate section that is heated which is 1.20m deep and then a tiny little kiddies splash pool. We only actually had a couple of days by the pool and found a sun bed relatively easy. We used the pool bar just once and it is good value for money with hot snacks, drinks and even a full buffet meal if you want it.

There's just ONE thing though.....

On our first morning there, the peace and tranquility of every other guest in the hotel was shattered by a large bunch of young lads obviously there with the intention of drinking as much as possible from the second the bar opened, making as much noise as possible, monopolising the whole pool by power bombing and lobbing each other in as they got drunker and drunker and generally making an all round nuisance of themselves with their poor behaviour. Embarrassingly, they were all English. Their behaviour included stripping off, dropping their shorts, shouting, swearing and worst of all, urinating over the sides of their balconies. This is disgusting and unacceptable by any holiday maker of any nationality and even worse so because there were young children about as well as plenty of middle aged and older people. The hotel was inundated with complaints and they chucked them out on the second or 3rd day....but then for some in explicable reason..let them back in again so they could repeat the process. They then got banned from the bar and just carried on drinking in the nearest bar to the hotel..which ensured that no-one else went in there and they were so bad it even disrupted the bars around them. One bar owner (Place2b) banned them before they ever even set foot in the place. They were intimidating to all other guests around them in the hotel and the surrounding area and I am sure the security guard enjoyed cleaning up the vomit in the reception area that one of them kindly left. The hotel should have stuck to it's guns when it chucked them out. This hotel is NOT suitable for big gangs of lads/lasses on booze tours.

Check out is by 12 noon and there is the option to extend your room stay if you have a late flight but the charge is 30 euro's and is probably not really worth it. There is a secure luggage room for cases that is free of charge but also lockers where you pay a euro but these are small and I am not sure many cases would fit in.

Lastly, there are plenty of bars, restaurants and supermarkets nearby..very short walking distance. 5 minutes walk will get you to the beach. The area around the hotel is generally clean and you don't get too much hassle from the "looky looky" men..always a bonus.

I would recommend this hotel and I would return.

Room Tip: Go for the higher floors..great view.

Decided 6 weeks ago we needed a holiday, looking about we found a cheap 11 days at santa maria, we usually go to Panorama, same group and not far away but they were full. We were not disappointed with this place, B&B, 1 Bed apartment, no view, (but acceptable). Breakfast was good, best to go around 8 to 8-30, it does get busy later we did hear complaints about waiting for food but it is fresh, they need time to cooked. We judged this as good as panorama, and would return to this place again.

This is a very nice 3 star aparthotel with good facilities. We had a studio, which was a decent size, immaculately clean and very comfortable. We knew there was no air conditioning and only a ceiling fan before we went, and while this is ok in May I wouldn't go in the height of summer.

We went on a bed and breakfast basis, and the breakfasts were very good - plenty choice and friendly staff. Reception staff are not so friendly...efficient enough but not particularly welcoming and tell you nothing on arrival. Safe cost is 18 euros, no deposit. A smile costs nothing however!

Pool area is nice...we had no difficulty getting sunbeds or an umbrella, but I wouldn't want to try in high season. Sunbeds are very comfortable, grounds are well kept and the pool bar offers a good selection of food and snacks at reasonable prices.

Our only problem was a very large group of English lads who spent their days drinking till they fell over, shouting and singing and being generally annoying. The hotel management seemed to do nothing about this. We heard they had been put out, but then allowed to return, and the group seemed to get larger by the day as more arrived. I guess the hotel was delighted about the amount of money they spent in the pool bar..not so nice for all the families and older people around the pool, or when walking round one of them who had passed out and vomited in reception.

Such a pity the management didn't take action to stop their awful behaviour..it's the one thing which would make me wary of recommending the hotel, which is otherwise very good. If they want to take bookings from large groups of youngsters, they should be prepared to deal with the consequences for the benefit of all the other guests.

Room Tip: 432 had a lovely view and side view of the sea.

My partner and I booked a week here last minute and were very pleased with our choice. We had a large apartment adequate room. Good telly as we stopped in a couple of night to chillax so this made a big plus for us. Clean and room staffed very friendly. Excellent location. Lovely pool area. No problems with sinners as in previous reviews plenty to go round. We were bed and breakfast no complaints there either food good and plentiful at all times as we got in quite late most mornings. Only a couple of niggles - could do with 2 mugs as part of crockery. Deter a bit uncomfortable backs too high. The reception staff really need to be more welcoming. I understand it is hard work being nice all the time but the restaurant and cleaners were always cheery so why not front of house most important job. Would definitely recommend and stop here again. Adeje is a lovely area. Overall we both had a great restful stay x

Room Tip: We had a sea view from the side but very little Sun on balcony room 680 in the left wing or east sid...
