We were upgraded to a garden villa when we arrived at this hotel what a lovely surprise. Best bath and shower we have ever had in any hotel constant really hot water. Our own little garden with jacuzzi and amazing views. The staff were all very friendly and obliging and nothing was too much trouble for them. We hear people say it's up a hill 15 minutes walk to anywhere. We are in our 60s and it took us 10 minutes to walk to restaraunts and shops and a nice stroll back up the hill to the hotel no problem. The thing that makes this hotel so special is the little extras that this hotel provides. Thank you to the managers and staff we had a lovely relaxing holiday and would recommend this hotel to our friends in fact we already have .

A very large Mercedes Benz with blacked out windows awaited us at Tenerife South Airport. Now that's the way to travel to your hotel!

I emailed the hotel a few weeks prior to our arrival and asked if they would arrange an airport transfer for us. Yes, 71 Euros each way is a little steep, but, as we had hoped, it was a hassle free way to get to the hotel, fast!

The hotel makes a very good first impression - a massive amount of kerb appeal - and, as many have said before us, we were warmly welcomed with a glass of bubbly and our cases were whisked off to our room!

The hotel decor is comtemporary with accents of the islands heritage. Lots of framed photos adorn the walls showing what the island used to be like before mass tourism engulfed it and, in particular, to remind you that the hotel is situate on what used to be a banana plantation. These are complimented by rustic and robust pieces of furniture and decorative accessories.

The hotel ouzes understated style and is definitely deserving of its 'Small Luxury Hotels of the World' listing.

The room was large, spacious, bright and clean. Do however remember to take a travel kettle with you if you like to make a hot drink in your room - we brought our tea and coffee yet forgot our kettle! The view from the balcony, which boasted quality furniture, was splendid - big, big skies in Tenerife. The extra that it cost for a panoramic sea view room was worth it!

Well, that is, until it turned 7pm (it was a Saturday) and the live band started entertaining the restaurant diners below the balcony. The restaurant benefits from a very generous al fresco area (which is also where breakfast is served) and this is where the band were situate. Whilst not offensive to the ear, as the jazzy music was quite pleasant, it was loud and there, in my opinion, is absolutely no way whatsoever one could "have an early night" especially if your room faces the pools and therefore the ocean and al fresco dining area!! The band had a break at about 7:45 pm and then resumed at 8:15 pm. They had another break at 9 pm and had packed up by 10 pm. Incidentally, as my fellow reviewers have already mentioned, the entertainment differed each evening, but, was always musical. For example, it was a pianist on the second night of our stay.

Earlier in the afternoon of our first day we ate at the pool side restaurant. The menu had good variety and the food tasty. Service was prompt and there was nothing at all to be faulted. In fact, during the course of our 6 night stay, we enjoyed from this restaurant: a homemade beef burger with fries, deed fried spicy chicken, a Vienna hot dog, breaded escalope with fries, ham and cheese toastie with fries and a tuna sandwich with herb mayonaise with fries.

That same first day, we decided to see what all the fuss has been about with regards to the steep hill to the beach, which is to your right as you exit the hotel reception by the way. Well let me tell you, the decent is fine but the assent, hmm, it's by no means impossible, but in the heat of midday it will undoutedly take it out of, as it were, all but the very fittest of folk and I would defy anyone not to break into a sweat. I have however attached a photo of the information upon reception showing the timetable for the free beach shuttle service that the hotel offers.

At the bottom of said hill, you need to cross the road, which is to your left, and then head down a descending footpath to reach the beach. If however, you follow the road as it bears right, you will see in the near distance a mini supermarket - very handy! We stocked up on water, crisps and a few cheeky beers for the room (there was ample room in the mini bar for four cans of San Miguel without removing anything).

On our first night at the hotel we were very weary from travelling and decided to order room service while we waited for the band to finish. A ham and mushroom pizza together with pasta in a tomato sauce were delivered to our room with a smile within 30 mins of ordering and they, quite frankly, exceeded our expectations. The food was fresh, hot and, in terms of the pizza, certainly tasted better than anything that might have emerged from a freezer before visiting the oven!!

Wifi by the way is available in the room with a username and password obtained from reception. The connectivity in our room (221) was frustratingly patchy and I would go far as to say: very poor. In a 5 star hotel in 2013, I simply cannot fathom what the problem is: guests, in my opinion, expect good wifi in their rooms (I know I do) so hotel management please invest some money immediately and get the issue resolved! You would never find a 5 star hotel room without a flat screen TV and the same should apply to room wifi. Of course, wifi is good in the communal areas of the hotel, that is, save for the pool areas where I found it to be, once again, patcy. Interestingly, I got really good wifi on the balcony and needless to say I spent many an hour relaxing there planning our next trip with Tripadvisor's help of course!

The measure of any hotel is, in my view, the quality of the breakfast. Variety is important but variety is pointless if quality is poor. Well, I thought that both the variety and quality were excellent here. It would be a very fussy person indeed who could not find something to eat. I particularly liked being able to watch my omlette or pancakes made before me at the hot plate station!!

On the second night of our stay we thought we would venture out for dinner. We turned right as we exited the hotel and at the round about instead of turning right and heading down the hill, we headed towards the new shopping mall in the opposite direction which was hard to miss with all of its lights and neon advertisements etc. The mall itself is impressive: Cartier, Porsche Design store etc. Whilst the shops are rather exclusive and therefore expensive, the supermarket in the basement is excellent and far better than the one I mentioned above!

From the mall we headed towards the beach. Though, in my opinion, there were not that many restaurants to chose from and those that were there pretty busy (at about 8pm ish).

On our third night, rather than pound the pavements looking for a restaurant recommended on Tripadvisor, we decided to try the hotel buffet as it was BBQ night. 35 euros each was the price for as much as you could eat (drinks were extra)! We gave it a go. Hmm, now please do not take this as me saying the food was not good, but the food was not great - the main meals looked distinctly average and the meat from the BBQ was just, fine. To be blunt, variety was not as impressive as that at breakfast and a small queue frequently formed at the BBQ (say, 5 or 6 persons max). The BBQ chef was under pressure and despite my answering of his question of: "well done, medium or rare, sir" with: "medium please", the food he put on my plate was in fact raw. Now some folk might like raw meat, but I do not. Although, to be fair, I returned to the BBQ and asked him to cook both meats (beef and pork) some more and he kindly obliged without fuss or query.

On our third day, we decided to walk from the hotel to Los Cristianos. We set off at about 10am and returned to the hotel via taxi at 6pm. We thoroughly enjoyed the walk and stopped, say, 5 times along the way to cool down, eat or sip an iced drink. The taxi fare from Los Cristianos was 12 Euros (on 12 November 2013). Not bad at all I thought.

That same day, being a Tuesday, it was the first night that the hotel's Jaima (Tapas and Bar) restaurant was open (it is open Tues to Fri (inclusive) only)) and so we decided to give it a go. Having visited Seville and Cordaba in April 2013 (the home of Tapas), I was expecting great things. Well, in summary, whilst variety is limited, the food is quality. We enjoyed patatas bravas, garlic infused steak and (perhaps more oriental than andalucian!) tempura vegetables. All were very delicious and, as we had grown to expect the service was first class. Incidentally, the Tapas restaurant doubles as the pool side restaurant during the day.
In fact the food was that good, we returned on our fourth and fifth nights and enjoyed (this time more American and andalucian) garlic mushrooms, freshly baked breads, 100% mini veal burger with potatoes and onion rings, and a mini Iberian burger with mustard and potatoes. Again, all delicious!

Now let me try and summarise my opinion and observations for you:

Location: this magnificant complex can only provide the amazing views of the Atlantic Ocean that it does by being in an elevated position and thus the hills surrounding the hotel are inevitable. However, having walked from the hotel all the way to Los Christianos, the hotel is clearly in the best part of this strip of beached coast.

The Complex: The hotel's pool areas and tropical gardens are absolutely beautiful: so very peaceful. No road noise. Nothing but bird song. Indeed, fellow hotel guests are so respectful of the tranquility of the gardens (or at least were when we were there) that I do not recall any voices being raised in the 7 days that were there!

Rooms: our panoramic sea view room was generous with quality furniture, and cleaned each day and evening to a very high standard indeed. The corridors leading to our room were, say, 5 metres wide and open to the elements meaning that the sense of space and the fresh air is fantastic, not to mention providing you with a constant reminder of the stunning views!

Food: whilst the buffet restaurant will appeal to others, we were really pleased that we booked bed and breakfast only. Half board guests can eat in the buffet restaurant but not the Tapas or Gourmet restaurants. We thought the room service, breakfast, pool-side restaurant and the Tapas restaurant were excellent and far superior to the buffet restaurant.

Improvements: Wifi could do with having its signal strength increased if possible. It would also be nice to be able to request from reception hot drink making facilities for the room. Finally, it would be great if rooms were equiped with DVD players and DVDs were available to loan from reception. The hotel is so very nice, we were quite happy to stay-in most nights and if we were not reading then it would have been good to watch a movie. We stayed in the Esplendido in Soller in Mallorca a couple of years ago and this system worked great. There was a list of DVDs available to loan in each room and you simply walked to reception and asked to borrow the one you wanted. Incidentally, there was no charge for the DVD loan.

Verdict: if we ever feel like a short break in the winter sun again and would like to remain within the hotel complex, then I can't think of a better place to go - I have a sneaky suspicion that we will return, soon!

We would not hesitate to recommend this hotel to family, friends and colleagues. Keep up the good work Vincci Seleccion La Plantacion del Sur!

Very pleasant hotel and resort. Would recommend to friends and family. Food lovely. Service very good. Nice clean beach. Pool just right size and lovely sun beds. Rooms really nice and spacious with large bathrooms. Quiet after dinner, but relaxing. Only 10 mins in a cab to rowdy resort if you want that sort of thing. Will probably go back here for another October holiday next year.

We have stayed at several hotels on the Island including some more pretentious and expensive ones and this hotel is on a par with the best. Service at reception, housekeeping, restaurants and around the pool are excellent and what one should expect from a 5 star hotel. The rooms are large and comfortable and the venue is some way away from the "highlights" of Play de las Americas and Los Christianos, thank goodness, as these parts are not improving.
Our only slight disappointment was the meal we had at the Gourmet restaurant. It promises to deliver and all the small things are there but more concentration on the quality of the main courses would make it something special.
A tip for future travellers, try to get a room that doesn't suffer from the noise of breakfast being served/prepared from 6.30 in the morning.

Recently returned from a week at this superb hotel. Food was great with a stunning buffet and a different theme every night. Entertainment was low key and was perfect for after dinner relaxation for both of us. Staff all attentive, smiling and ready to help and in most cases couldn't do enough for you, plenty of pools to choose from but trust me when I say choose the pool beneath the spa. I recommend you try the local Canarian wines as most of them are outstanding especially the rosé and higher priced whites. Negatives? Bar service a little slow during busier periods of meal times, and the reservation of sun beds that on some occasions were never used or used for moving around different pools was a little frustrating but in no way spoilt one of our best relaxing weeks away in a long time thank you la plantacion
