We had great weather, the staff are indeed very helpful, and the buffet food was excellent (we were thinking we'd use the gourmet a la carte restaurant but never felt the need). But we came away with "that was ok" rather than "wow!" .

On arrival we upgraded to a solarium villa. Our original room 019 was fine but the balcony was tiny and overlooked 5 lanes of traffic. Sure it wasn't exactly spaghetti junction but there was plenty of road noise outside. So we ended up in 732 which was still overlooking the roads, but had the outside space to relax in the sun. The room itself was just ok - but apart from a splendid multi-directional shower nothing special, and the floor tiles were scratched and need repair.

The biggest irritation was the number of maintenance problems. We moved in and there was no plug for the jacuzzi. No plugs of the right size were available. Eventually the staff member went next door and gave us their plug. I hope he found one for them! Then we discovered the Russian roulette called "opening the door with key cards". We just couldn't get them to work and neither could the staff. This is a luxury small hotel of the world, and we're repeatedly standing outside unable to get into our accommodation. It's not the end of the world when the English TV channels don't work for several days, but couple that with the above - to say nothing of the erratic wifi on top - and at these prices its starts to grate. Our safe locked us out and again we're on to the maintenance team. By this stage it felt like I was co-ordinating an entire repair programme.

I now have a thing about luxury hotels and wifi. Just fix it so it works for everybody all the time. Period. Its the way of the world that some of us have to do some work when we're away and supposed to be on holiday. I expect to be able to do that when I want and not have to stop what I'm enjoying doing because the wifi has kicked in. If it doesn't work we don't go back. It's as simple as that.

We used the gym quite a bit and the norm was that either the towels or the water or the cups needed replenishing; its not the end of the world for sure but in a proper luxury small hotel of the world (and we've been there) that doesn't happen.

Don't get me wrong. We still had a good week. We went for warmth, sun and a break to recharge and that was delivered. We hired a car and got an upgrade so we were exploring the magnificent Teide in a Mercedes SLK. It had done 185,000km but it was still an SLK. And we had a lovely afternoon on a yacht with attending dolphins and pilot whales. Despite the concrete jungle of South Tenerife we'd go back for a warm week and a relatively short flight......if there was a hotel that fully lived up to the luxury billing.

So overall despite the lovely staff, for the 5 star billing and the prices, for us La Plantacion has a bit to do.

PS We're around 60, and the hill wasn't an issue, even in heat of the day.

This is the second time that my wife and I have been back to La Plantacion in four months for good reason. We travel frequently and have stayed in lots of hotels (recently: Claridges, Crazy Bear, The Grove (Watford) Cosmopolitan and Wynn ( Las Vegas), Dinarobin (Mauritius) and other luxury hotels in Tenerife / Adjede - to the bog standard for business travel). I'm just saying this to give you a sense of our reasonably broad experience of a range of hotels.

We first stayed in the hotel as part of my recovery after an operation in September and retured again for Christmas. La Plantacion, has great facilities, excellent food and nicely appointed rooms, good spa gym etc. It is in a good location, close to the beach and local amenities.

However the thing that really sets the hotel apart is the service. Which I have to say is amongst the best that I have ever experienced. It is truely world class.

Without exception the people that work in the hotel are totally genuine in their commitment to providing outstanding service in an incredibly friendly and welcoming fashion. This is regardless of their job, from porters to reception staff, to maintenance staff and maids.

Nothing was too much trouble - Wi-Fi signal not strong enough? Let’s put a router in your room. Your surgery affects your mobility? let’s put you in one of the Villas. You’ve left items behind? Let us ship them to you.

This service was delivered in that difficult to strike balance of relaxed friendliness without being overly attentive. On my return, hotel employees remembered my name and my circumstances which was totally unexpected.

The hotel can be a little quiet in the evenings and there is a fair amount of caberet acts, depending on whether that is you kind of thing. You may find hotels with better individual facilities or that are slightly more luxurious, however as an overall package with service second to none you really can't go wrong with La Plantacion.

We have had an excellent stay in your hotel for 14 days. The best stay we have had in Tenerife and Gran Canary till now. We were very satisfied to live in one of the villas - No 707, and hope to come back in the future.

Room Tip: Room 707 was very nice - but it was no sun at the terrasse

My wife and I, together with two friends, have just spent 10 days at La Plantacion. On entering the hotel on day one we had a good feeling that this was going to be special. The grounds housing the 5 pools are superb being spacious enough for you find a relaxing spot to unwind. The inside accommodation did not disappoint. The restaurant served up excellent food and the staff could not do enough for you, in fact the whole of the hotel staff deserve the highest praise for their attentiveness to the guests. The only downside - 10 days not long enough- we will return!

Room Tip: Attempt to get a high room to enjoy the superb views.

Another last minute booking-Our usual Teneriffe bolt hole -El Duque --was fully booked for new year, so this hotel was shown by TripAdvisor as being no 2. We booked 'The best villa in the hotel'--and it was very nice. Two storey, with private rooftop patio and pool--ideal for skinny dipping and an all over tan! The public pools however, were freezing and few used them The food and service was the hotels saving grace. Some of the nicest staff in any hotel I've been to and a sensational buffet food offering-- both breakfast and dinner. However, come 9,0 pm--the place turns into an old peoples retirement home. No social bar to speak of and the outside seating was limited and dimly lit. No wonder so few people were around much past 10. pm. Which is a shame. The management must clearly see the demand for after dinner drinks and socialising--and stop relying on a tacky 40 minute 'cabaret' act--usually a single person with keyboard, a singer, or in one case, a bizarre 'rock group' that were simply dreadful! We had new year there and, whilst the dinner 'party' was reasonable with really great hats, trumpets and such, [apart from the food ] it all fell flat at midnight. Whilst the whole of Teneriffe was partying--this place was cleaning up and preparing for breakfast! And that's the flaw in this otherwise quite nice hotel. If you want a very quiet, hotel. with little of no social side--then this is the one for you!

Room Tip: Avoid rooms facing the road--VERY noisy. If funds permit--take a villa.

First the positives

We visited this hotel in September of last year. Its very "zen" so peaceful and has a very calm atmosphere.
The staff are just wonderful and cannot do enough for you.
Always found a bed round the pool although if you want one of the Balinese beds you would have to be up very early in the morning.
The Drinks are hotel prices always well served and good quality brands.
The food was good if a bit repetative. There was always a great selection at breakfast but being there for two weeks we ate out a couple of times.
The room we had was lovely large with plenty of space for our clothes and a fantastic view from the side of the hotel over the bay. The bathroom was as you would expect in a 5 star hotel, spacious good quality toiletries decent hairdryer towels changed twice daily. We had a turn down service and the ladies who cleaned our room were fabulous and kept our accommodation spotless.
There was some sort of music every night which was lovely if you managed to be seated outside on the terrace.
The courtyard seating was beautiful but could be quite dark,(just a personal preference).
There is a bus service accross the road outside Del Duque hotel that will take you to Costa Adeje shops and on to Las Americas.
If you like markets there is one twice a week opposite the Adeje Gran hotel about 10 - 15 mins walk away.
Continue down that road and you reach the shopping centre. Take your bank cards its very expensive mostly designer shops. Nice to have a look around though.

The Negatives

As people have stated before the walk back up to the hotel from the beach can be quite difficult in the heat. If you dont want to face a steep climb back to the hotel - and it is steep - you could get a taxi.
After the first few times out it was always a walk there and a taxi back from wherever we were.
The first few days in this hotel were really great. Always had a table outside on the terrace then the Guest relations manager arrived. I think she worked for Tui and their German customers. She did a wonderful job for her customers always greeting them warmly and loudly whilst studiosly ignoring everyone else. Other guest spoke to us and we agreed with them that the atmosphere had changed. First consideration for tables were given to this ladies guests and after that we had to have dinner inside most nights. On the few occassions we did get a table outside she would stand near speaking loudly to her guests. It was very noticeable.
My husband did speak to the desk about this but it looked like their hands were tied. They were so lovely you could tell they couldnt say anything about it but new we and other guests were right.
We heard another couple complain as they were checking out and we were waiting on transport for a trip.
The reason I have deducted one point is after the barbeque night my husband became unwell one of the guests pointed out to me that the chef used the same tongs to pick up and serve the cooked meat as he had just used to put the raw chicken/meat on the grill. We did not go to the next barbeque night instead opting to eat out that night instead.

Overall we enjoyed our holiday. Will we go back - maybe for a week - couldnt do the hill for two.
The biggest asset this hotel has is its staff they are amazing.

Room Tip: The rooms on the side of the hotel have uninterupted views of the bay fabulous only thing is the roa...

We had five nights on half board basis at this great hotel. The accommodation, facilities and restaurant were all excellent. Above all the staff are all trained extremely well and can not do enough for you and all with a smile. The Guest Relations Managers are professional and attentive, particularly Daniella. If we return to Tenerife in the future this hotel will be at the top of our list. Well done to a we'll run hotel!
