Just come back from this hotel. Having been to Tenerife many times in my 20's I was worried as to how my husband and 10 yr old daughter would fare as I have to admit we are used to 5* luxury top 10 on trip adviser hotels...The El Duque area is certainly very exclusive, clean and tidy. This hotel was a lovely surprise. Very clean, tidy and luxurious. Nothing was too much for the staff who adored children and would play and joke with them if they saw the children in the public areas. This is not a big hotel which we like. There is enough going on but will not suit those who wish to be entertained non stop. It is very family friendly but also a lovely place for couples. There is a kid club but like ourselves most parents were actually enjoying spending time with their children. The pools and gardens were beautiful. Due to not being the usual Tenerife destination the children were well behaved and considerate but still had a really good time. The sun beds were of course popular but there was always a life guard on duty who would watch absentees and after an hour or so shut their umbrella and remove their towels unless there were personal possessions there. You were always able to find somewhere even if you had to ask someone next to an empty bed if it was free, the holiday makers were pleasant and polite in reply. They have lovely cabanas as well as the usual sunbeds and much greenery around to hide from what was hot sun in August.
My only criticism if I had one was perhaps the food in the evening. The breakfasts are wonderful (you were even offered bucks fizz on B/B) and you can have as much as you like. Pancakes and omelettes freshly made and plenty for the kids. one morning they brought out homemade chocolate covered apples which went down a treat. Lunch by the pool is very good.. the homemade beef cheese burger is out of this world as are the freshly made Mojitos. In the evening you are faced with the a la carte gourmet Canarian restaurant which we did not try. There is the buffet restaurant which has a different theme each night for example European or BBQ. There is a lot of choice but as is usually the case with mass produced food the food can be fairly same same. The presentation is excellent and the chef takes great pride in checking everything but I think it is unavoidable that some quality is lacking when you have to cater for so many people. They have a grill so each day you can have freshly cooked the meats on offer for that day and the steak, chicken and seafood were amazing and cooked in front of you by friendly staff.
We opted for B/B and so it gave us the flexibility to try other restaurants in the evening which we did and there is a good choice nearby if you do not want to go into the bigger parts of the south of the island.
Reception were very helpful and would order a taxi for you or arrange a trip. They have a special price for arranging a taxi to the airport. I always get a taxi in Tenerife so it is door to door and you do not have to stop at all hotels. It often works out cheaper too. The hotel does not charge for arranging a trip for you.
Typically our flight was in the evening and check out time is noon. If your room is still available they are more than happy to let you keep it til you go to the airport for 39 euros if not you can book a courtesy room free for an hour. We stowed our cases in the luggage room and went to the courtesy room for the pool an hour before we wanted to go to the airport. It is in effect a hotel room next to reception with all the toiletries and towels you had available in your room so it allowed us to have another day at the pool rather than sit round with our cases.
I don't usually sleep on holiday with the beds being too uncomfortable or small. We had a superking being two full singles pushed together and made as one bed and our daughter had a spacious sofa bed in the room with us.
Unlike other hotels that say tips are included but you know you will have to tip each time to get service we did not see anyone tipping here or the staff seeking the same. They were more than happy to serve you expecting nothing in return. We did tip the bellboy as usual but chose at the end of the holiday to give 10 or 20 euros to the one or two members of staff at the end of our 7 day holiday were were overwhelmed by the gesture and genuinely sorry to see us go.
This hotel is one of the few places that I really want to go back to. Even my "always on the go" husband managed to relax and enjoy himself. We will be back..
