“Nice hotel, keen but sometimes poor service. Don't try walking anywhere!”
Reviewed 26 April 2007

We booked the Plantacion hotel as a family easter break and opted for one of the Royal Suites with a couple of extra beds for the kids. The suite was actually in effect a large room which was probably twice the size of a standard room, with a walk in closet and large bathroom. Beware - some of the balconies on the upper floors are very climable for young children.

The hotel itself is very nice, and the variety of pools is great. Only one of them is heated which is a bit of an issue in April. We didn't visit the spa complex as it cost an extra 10 Euros just to use the indoor and additional outdoor pool - a bit cheeky when you're paying a few hundred Euros per night for a room.

The hotel is a couple of hundred metres from the sea, but is set up on a small hill so the views are good (but probably aren't from the apartments which are much lower). However, the walk to the sea is very convoluted and this bit of the resort is really designed for cars, not people.

The breakfast was good standard Euro breakfast with a wide variety on offer. Omelettes and pancakes could be cooked for you on demand (and on show) but this involved queueing. The evening buffet meal was comprehensive but not special and at 40 Euros a head (if you're on B&B) excluding wine is poor value.

The main problem we had with the hotel was the service, particularly at reception. The staff have variable levels of English but also have to answer the phone while they serve you, meaning that simple issues can take an age to resolve and queues can build up. They're all very willing but sometimes don't quite realise what a 5 star GL hotel should be.

Kids club was ok but sometimes the older children weren't controlled very well. The internet room computers were very unreliable and the pool tables didn't work.

Lastly the rooms are a bit noisy - we were sometime kept awake by people walking down the corridor and the air con and traffic noise can be intrusive at night and in the early morning.

All in all a pleasant week but with a few rough edges which we would not expect from a hotel of this rating (and price)

We stayed at this hotel for one week and, quite honestly, it was one of the loveliest holidays we have ever had. We upgraded to a villa which overlooked the bay and the room facilities were just amazing - including having a jacuzzi on the top floor next to a private sun terrace which had the most spectacular sea view - very romantic! The bed was enormous and the bathroom facilities superb!

We were looking for an hotel which offered the kind of service you would expect from a spa - very friendly and helpful but also discreet. Obviously this hasn't gone down well with other clients based on some of the reviews I have read, however it really suited us. On arrival we were given glasses of sparkling white wine and were transported to our villa with our luggage. Every member of staff was friendly, smiling and caring.

We stayed b&b but ended up also eating at the hotel most evenings. Yes, it is pricey but we expected this at a 5* hotel! Yes, it was served mostly as buffet but the sheer choice of food was amazing. Room service was prompt when required and , although the pool bar lunch menu offered only a limited choice, the food was excellent.

The hotel is on a hill and set apart slightly from the rest of the resort so having your own transport is definitely recommended. This remoteness may not suit everyone but we deliberately chose it so as to be away from any hustle and bustle of any other hotels. As a result it's a fairly quiet location which was exactly what we wanted.

An excellent shopping centre and gorgeous golden beach with cafes & bars is a 5 minute drive away with free parking available for up to 2 hours.

Personally speaking, we will definitely be going back.

Booked a last minute holiday to the hotel. Was very impressed on arrival - we hadn't hired a car but knew it was on a hilly location, but in all fairness, most of Spain is so this wasn't really a deterrent, however I can understand that it could be problematic for some people. The hotel itself seemed very big and deserted, which is a shame, perhaps it was becuase it was off season but other hotels seemed busy. Perhaps this is a newer hotel that people aren't aware of yet. The bars were empty at night and i felt sorry for the band playing there! However, we wanted a relaxing holiday so it was perfect. The service was ok, I wouldn't say it was bad or otherwise, the staff seemed friendly and helpful but not 5* service. The breakfast buffet was good, not amazing but good, as was the dinner buffet which we had a couple of times but i would skip that and head to the La Torre del Mirador which is a 5 minute walk downhill on the beachfront, much better food and atmosphere. Poolwise, there was no such service as such, no one coming round to offer drinks etc. I would not rate this hotel as a 5*, more a good 4* Pool areas were lovely, plenty of beds available, but only one pool could be swum in due to the fact the others were freezing, so you get kids in the main pool when you were trying to swim which is frankly a bit annoying!

Overall, I had no problems with the hotel, it just lacked atmosphere and you get the feeling the maangement weren't quite sure as to what they are trying to 'make' the hotel.

We have just returned from a week's stay at La Plantacion which we found to be a pleasant enough stay. However, from the contents of other reviews I'm inclined to think we may have been lucky in some ways. We booked a junior suite and got a top floor room overlooking the sea. As other reviewers have already mentioned, the room was top class - furnished to 5-star standards. However, much of the rest of what is on offer is very distinctly 4-star.
The breakfast buffet is generous but it's not 5-star and it's the simple things they're missing. For instance, we gave up drinking tea for breakfast because we couldn't get a pot of hot water. I know it's not the end of the world but how hard can it be?
The grounds and pools are impeccably maintained, however the poolside area got quite crowded on sunny afternoons. The one heated pool gets a bit crowded too. The lunch menu at the poolside restaurant is very basic but there is no alternative unless you pack up your belongings and head out of the hotel to one of the local restaurants. Also, as mentioned by another reviewer, a waiter service for the pool area would be a great enhancement.
Our booking was for B&B only and judging by reviews of the dinner buffet this was the better choice. Thankfully there are some very good restaurants within a few minutes taxi ride.
The staff in the hotel were extremely pleasant. They will recommend and book restaurants and order taxis willingly. They could not be more helpful. It's just a shame there aren't more of them!
Overall, we were largely underwhelmed by a rather average experience despite the quality of the premises and the best efforts of the staff.
Been there, done that and one trip will be enough.

The hotel is very impressive and tastefully decorated. It sits at the top of a hill and has the best views of all the hotels in La Caleta. Unfortunately being on the top of a hill means a steep climb back up when you've been down to the beach/supermarket/dinner! I would not recommend this hotel to people with children (unless they intend on never going out) or people in a wheelchair. There is a hotel minbus but I didn't see it once and we were there for a week. The rooms are very nice, large with great bathrooms, we stayed in a superior deluxe with seaview though it turns out every room has a seaview so don't think you are paying extra for that! The pool area is great but as everyone keeps mentioning, the pools apart from the heated pool are far too cold to go into. They were not used once including the baby pool which is a shame as we were there with our son and it was too cold to take him in there. The breakfast buffet was plentiful, fruit bar, cereals, breads/rolls, three types of caviar, freshly squeezed juices,a variety of fried foods (including some made to order), pancakes, pastries you name it. There was definitely plenty to eat! We had the evening buffet twice, it was lovely sitting outside for dinner and again there was a lot of choice though the food wasn't as good as at breakfast. We can recommend a good restaurant which is situated in front of the Bahia called La Torre del Mirador. You need to book at week-ends, it does a great fillet steak and seafood and is right on the sea front. They have live music every night and the food and service is excellent. There is a Spar Supermarket within approx. 20 min walk. This stocked a good range of items. There is another supermarket the opposite direction (down the hill towards the Sheraton) but this did not stock as good a range.
All the staff at the hotel were great, especially the breakfast staff, reception and Hussein who currently runs the different exercise programs during the day, I did the aqua aerobics and body & condiitioning and would recommend both - they were a lot of fun!
As everyone has also mentioned, there is a lack of staff at this hotel and I would therefore rate it four star, not five. It looks like a five star hotel but is missing the service you would expect.
We were after a relaxing weeks holiday in the sun with our young son and this is what we got, we loved it but next time would stay at a hotel on the sea front purely because the walking was just too much and the service could have been better. We both certainly felt a lot fitter from it though!

Stayed here last week and although the rooms, grounds, pool areas are all fantastic they can't take away from the poor service received at this hotel. I do not for 1 minute believe that there are problems with the staff but do believe that there is a significant lack of staff meaning guests are left waiting to be served continually. Not what you expect from a 5 Star hotel.

Firstly the bar and eating area at the pool are no where near big enough for the number of guests at the hotel. The lunchtime menu is poor and it takes an age to be served. It can take staff several minutes to clear and re-set dirty tables and usually you need to ask for basics such as a butter knife and sideplate. There are no pool boys/girls meaning everytime you need a drink of water, you need to get dressed and walk to the bar and wait to be served.

If you are booked to stay at this hotel, what ever you do, do not eat at the evening buffet. This is 40 euro per person, self serve, motoway service station rubbish.

Breakfast is buffet style and on initial inspection looked good however, coffee was usually cold, the juice machines empty and the food usually looked as if it had been sitting for days. They do have a hot plate on the go for eggs and pancakes though.

There is no bar inside the hotel until one of the seating areas is opened with a small bar after dinner. This was used in the evenings for some entertainment as the Jazz bar was not open. The poolside bar closes as 6.30 pm meaning there is nowhere to go for a pre-dinner drink.

The Spa although very clean and spacious offers limited treatments. Ladies, please be warned that many of the therapists are male and expect you to lie in only your pants. I was shocked by this and my therapist offended so be sure to ask for a female therapist and also mention that you wish to have your modesty respected at all times.

Room service is also poor and very expensive.

The rooms are however beautiful. Make sure you ask for a room overlooking the pool area or you will have an enclosed balcony over the dual carriageway.

During our week long stay, many guests made complaints however, these fell on deaf ears by the management. it is a shame as the staff we encountered were trying very very hard.

The hotel is at the top of a hill and although the access for the elderly and people with disabilities within the hotel is good, you will need to take taxis if you want to get out and about. Downhill is easy enough but very steep coming back up the hill.

I wouldn't stay again. The other 5 star hotels in the local area seem to have better reviews and are along the beach front with easier access to local restaurants/bars.

This hotel was booked for us by a specialised travel agent for us to take our son, who uses a wheelchair. Fortunately we went to Tenerife on our own before we took our son. We visited the hotel twice as we couldnt believe it the first time, how can you possibly take a disabled person to this hotel, they wouldnt be able to go outside. We lost our deposit as we cancelled as soon as we came back, but I think it was worth it, we will not be using the "specialised" travel agent again, this was false advertising. The area around the hotel is still being constructed in parts, the hills around the hotel are very steep, imagine that in June, trying to get a wheelchair up those hills!! You would need accessible taxis all the time to go out, not my idea of a holiday at all.
