“All you want from a B&B, and more.”
Reviewed 12 December 2011

We stayed there for a single night in November and wished we had had the time to stay longer. The place is beautiful, with welcoming rooms, a nice open living/dining room for breakfast and a perfectly manicured garden. The hosts are charming and can converse in a surprising number of languages (generally a strong point for Belgium!). Privacy is good (you can access your room without having to wake everyone up), breakfasts are splendid and the place is clean, tidy and better equipped than many luxury hotels we've seen (large bathrooms, good TV, an espresso machine in your room and many other details).

The only downside is that it's a little out of the way meaning that you should definitely have your own set of wheels if you want to stay there. However, it's also a good occasion to explore a little of Ghent's surroundings and the countryside. Lokeren is a charming small Belgian town with nice restaurants so you shouldn't give it a miss. And obviously, Ghent is the materpiece of the region, better in some ways than Bruges as it is far from being a "museum city" despite the good number of beautiful sights to visit (a fully-restored medieval castle, pedestrian city center, churches, Flemmish architecture, etc). Ghent is also quieter than Bruges when you want to avoid the tourist hordes.

All in all, DePeperbus was for us a picture-perfect B&B where we will be staying again, preferably in summer to enjoy cycling and better weather!

I am usually a hotel guy. The good ones are usually safe bets with consistent standards and convenient locations. But $300 euro a night just was too steep for our stay in Brussels so I began to check out bed and breakfasts around Brussels. I found De Peperbus (Flemish for the pepper shaker) online and since the price was reasonable and the reviews were good, I booked it for 2 nights my me, my wife, my son and daughter-in-law.
Wonderful decision!
Located out in the flemish countryside about 45 minutes west of Brussels, finding this b and b was the only challenge (but quite manageable with a gps).
We pulled in at close to 10pm to find a light on and our hostess ready to show us to our rooms. Both rooms we booked were quite spacious, clean, invitingly decorated. Both had bathrooms with shower in the room which were spotless. We slept like logs.
Next morning we got a better look at the surroundings. The b and b itself was set on about an acre lot with flower gardens, a vegetable patch and hedges which give the outdoor breakfast table a sense of privacy. (Though it is in the countryside, there are several houses nearby).
Breakfast was a feast with fresh breads, fresh vegetables, ham and all kinds of deli meats, jams which were really home made and eggs cooked any way you wanted (mine were poached to perfection). Even the orange juice was fresh squeezed that morning and bursting with flavor. Best of all was the interesting conversation we had with Pascale, the owner, who along with her husband run this delightful place. She speaks Flemish, French, and English amazingly well. We wanted her to just sit and tell us stories about Belgium and the areas we were going to see. And she was happy to accommodate us giving us tips about Bruges and Ghent which all proved to be true.
Both nights we stayed here were ideal. The perfect balance between privacy and service. We learned the Pascale and her husband built their house with a b and b in mind several years ago. The house, and Pascale, are a perfect combination.
When we left to continue our journey into Germany it was with a renewed appreciation for the difference between a good hotel and a good b and b. The level of attention and the getting to know someone and perhaps understanding the culture are just so much deeper at the b and b. Great experience.
When we come back, and we will, we will base our travels in Belgium out of De Peperbus. It is not that far from a major freeway and more than worth any extra travel time to get here.

A beautiful guesthouse in the Flanders area, close to the market town of Lokeren. With Ghent, Antwerp and Bruges not to far away.
Pascale and her husband are perfect hosts. They will go out of their way to make your stay perfect. It was out 25th wedding anniversary while we were there. Pascale put flowers and champagne in our room.
The guesthouse only as 3 guestrooms, each one is different, all beautiful. Each one as a mini bar, flatscreen tv,en suite bathroom, adjustable bed. Breakfast is plentiful, all fresh and local produce. I would recommend this beautiful guesthouse to anyone who is considering a visit to Flanders area of Belgium.
