“Lovely stopover”
Reviewed 24 June 2014

Pre-booked our night stop after checking out the Trip Advisor reports, something we always do now before deciding on a hotel. We travelled down from the Amsterdam area through Holland and Belgium before eventually after some difficulty finding this hotel. Our one night stopover was made even better by the lovely 6 course meal we had in the restaurant - the food being really delicious. The hotel is set in beautiful countryside and we only wish that we could have stayed longer to do a bit of walking. Extremely pleasant staff and have no hesitation in recommending the Chateau de la Motte as a good place to stay.

I don't know about you but we like to end our touring holidays with a bit of a treat; so a Chateau set just north of the Ardennes, which catered for classic car tourers and dog owners promised a little slice of heaven. And it didn't disappoint. Arriving late afternoon we were shown up the magical grand wooden staircase, made from what appeared to be a single giant oak, to a lovely spacious suite. The peace and quiet, after a day on the motorway, washed over us as we took an apertif in the sun-trap courtyard. The staff were preparing dinner, fresh veg was being wheeled to the kitchens and we were able to roam the Chateau and gardens like it was our own home. Entering the main hall we realised from the immaculate table settings that we had stumbled on a gastronomique treat. Not really ones for such things we asked about dining and were told it was no problem and just to come down later. So we did. The food was wonderful but it was the chef that made it special. Courteous and truly friendly, the staff really seemed to care that you felt at home. Weary, and with another days drive ahead, we retired early, saying bonsoir to the locals, all dressed up, who were beginning to arrive like guests at a private country house party. We asked to take coffee in our room and when it arrived with home made chocolates it just topped out the whole treat experience. We slept like logs in our huge soft bed and awoke to a great buffet breakfast. The dogs loved the nearby walk around the lake - a blessing when your on the road. Chateau de la Motte is wonderful; will definitely be visiting again.

This is a pleasant hotel set in lovely countryside. The rooms are small but adequate, though our bathroom was not really very good, tiny bath and hand held shower only.

The dining room is the best feature internally and is lovely, the food was generally good, though we had the half board option, and I do not think this was up to the standard of the other menus available. Breakfast was adequate.

We would visit again I think.

We did spent a Saturday night at this hotel, which is located in "the middle of nowhere", outside of the very small village of Liessies, near a lake and a forest. Beautiful environment for a nice walk ! The hotel was formerly a place where the monks from the closeby abbey could come to take a rest or to retire. Our room was good size, a bit old fashioned, but charming. The bed was soft, and a bit small for 2 people. During the night, it is absolutely quiet. Dinner in the restaurant is a positive experience. The staff is very friendly, the food is good, quite big portions, and there is a good wine selection for reasonable prices. The restaurant is quite big. Breakfast has a good choice (for French norms, at least) and is self-service from a buffet. Ample parking space. Recommended for a weekend break, "away from it all"

What a glorious chateau, appearing to be 17th century or so. The room was warm and comfortable, with an incredible marble (non-working) fireplace with ornate iron inlay. The dinner was magnificent -- excellent wine/beer choices, eclectic menu items and wonderful, gracious service. Breakfast was equally wonderful with the assortment of breads, meats and cheeses -- and requisite chocolate croissants :) If you prefer quiet and peace, this is the place for you.

Quiet and peaceful this lovely old moat (Motte) is home to a family of hoteliers who really know their business. The welcome is warm and the food is incredible. It is very comfortable and peaceful and worth going to for destination dining. They do their best to communicate in English and a knowledge of French is useful but not entirely necessary.
I liked the old world charm and breakfast in the room is a real treat.

we have just returned from a short stay at Chateau de la Motte and cannot recommend it highly enough. It is a little of the tourist trail in a beautiful area called Avesnois near forests and lakes and very peaceful. The aim for us was to visit battlefields of the first and second world wars and Waterloo as we enjoy history. Although it was a drive it was lovely to come back to the peace and seclusion. The food was amazing we were going to upgrade to a better menu as sometimes on half board the food is disappointing but there was a choice of three things every night for three courses and not one was duplicated during our four night stay. The food was HOT! Unusual for France but for us English a delightful surprise! The owners were delightful and every night came round to see that we had enjoyed the meal. The first night was quite chilly even in May and there was a roaring log fire in reception to enjoy our aperitifs by. The rooms were lovely and ours had just been decorated and we had an extra room with a sofa bed in it. They were warm and the bed very comfortable. Breakfast was the usual Continental breakfast but a juicer was put out so we could have fresh orange. The ham was home cooked and not out of a packet! Viennoisrie was very fresh and breakfast coffee very smooth. It was extremely good value and of course we benefited from the weak euro at the moment which is always a bonus! A walk before or after dinner took us to the lakes and into the forest on our doorstep. All in all a wonderful few days. We hope to return at a later dater. Monsieur has promised to enquire about the fishing rights!
