This is a working church. They allowed us to take pictures on the day we went, which was a Thursday. But the guide said they won't allow any on the weekends. It cost us $10 to enter and about that much for a person who showed us around. I don't think he was affiliated with the church, just a local who was hanging around. He didn't speak much English, but enough to help us.
I was under the impression that this was the old original church. After getting here and looking around I read that it was constructed in 1972. I think the reason it is famous in the DR is because the Pope had visited at one time. The old church from the 1500's is a few blocks away. I was more impressed with that church just because of the age of the building.
