Reviewed 3 May 2012 via mobile

This is our first trip away from our newborn for a long weekend, and we enjoyed it a lot. Like any all inclusive resorts, Dreams had many activities planned throughout the day to get both adults and kids involved.

We stayed at the preferred club @ the hotel. It provides you a private section with a smaller crowd while granting you access to everything else. The rooms seem better than the regular ones from the peeks we took into the other rooms.

The diving shop on site has a very friendly crew as well. We hadn't dove for a year and half before we went, and the dive master was very patient at explaining things to me. The sites we went to were gorgeous as well.

Our favorite 5p activity was getting some Mojito at the pool bar. When you get to combine suntanning and alcohol together, that is a vacation!

We love staying at Dreams, La Romana and we've been there twice. The only thing we can't tolerate is the souvenier vendors they allow in several times a week. They are way too aggressive and can't take a polite, "No Thank You" as a hint that you are not interested. The sad thing is that I would like to look at what they are selling, but I can't stand the high pressure and "begging". After one encounter my husband and I went to great extremes to avoid the area where they had their tables set up. Dreams needs to set some rules, or at least train these vendors on how to approach (or not approach) people because most people do not want to be chased down to buy something. I will also say that I did but a gift from one of them, and after the deal was closed the man I was dealing with looked at me with what I can only describe as malice.

Room Tip: All the rooms we've stayed in are nice.

This review is quite delayed, but I just started writing reviews here. My husband and I spent the first week of May 2011 at Dreams, La Romana.

For us, the highlight of the entire vacation was the snorkeling. We are not experienced snorkelers but found what we thought entertaining snorkel areas right off the resort's beach, very convenient. There are some good coral areas not too far out, and we basically went out there everyday. Saw a ton of different tropical fish, swarms of sargeant fish actually followed us around. We took our own snorkel gear from home.

The beach is okay for lounging, but sometimes crowded. There were quite often people selling things or toting around animals for photo-ops (for money), weaving through the chairs, so you have to make sure not to engage if you'd rather be left alone.

The food was low-end. We are definitely NOT foodies, in fact, my husband has super basic tastes...so we thought there is no way food will be a problem. In reality, even the basic things offered were just not good. We were also there at a very slow time, it seemed, so perhaps the selection was different. I am the type of person who will eat/try most anything, and found some of what I ate fairly unappetizing, overall not very tasty. The Dominican restaurant (La Jungle) was probably the best - it was my husband's birthday and some of the servers sang, brought out sparklers and made a fun and festive scene.

To get a good drink, you have to specifically request the type of liquor. The signature drinks (special of the day?) were sometimes decent. Unlike food, I am more particular about my booze, and in my opinion the stuff you'd get if you didn't ask for higher quality was total swill. We tipped at the bars, hoping it might help, but found you really just have to ask. And try a little Spanish if you can.

The room was really beautiful and we were greeted by a nice display of towel animals, bougainvillaea flowers and a plate of fruit. We were on a corner and could see the pool and the ocean, and since it was the top floor the ceiling was high and vaulted. We had no major problems with water, except that the toilet ran constantly unless we opened the top tank and adjusted the ball cock or whatever that thing in there is. The bathroom was clean with a lot of nice complimentary items. There were always the requisite "baby ants" as my husband calls them roving around on the counters, but that is normal. The one real problem we encountered, room wise, was the crazy animal that would screech repeatedly at all hours. The first night it happened we swore it was IN the room, up in the ceiling somewhere. We had a flashlight scanning around but saw nothing. It happened intermittently, we actually recorded it one time. Maybe a bat, probably a bird, either way it was loud and startling in the middle of the night! Slept with earbuds in. The last night we were there it was drowned out by the TV in the next room over (walls really are paper thin). There are actually posters in the hallways reminding people (likely housekeeping) to be quiet!

We only went on one excursion at the end of our trip - to Santo Domingo. Another excursion we tried to do got cancelled, so the day trip to SD was our second choice. It was interesting, historically. Many shopping opportunities worked in between the museums. You get to see a lot of neat architecture. My memory is tainted, however, because I believe this is where I picked up the Salmonella that set in when we got home a couple days later. Without thinking, I drank a soda with ice cubes - never do that! I should have known better, but I was so thirsty!

We do not plan to return. I think the all-inclusive resort is just not our thing. We like a little more adventure, spontaneity, and sight-seeing mixed in with the leisure time. I felt a little captive. The excursions seemed kind of expensive and required more planning ahead. We went to one of the entertainment shows and it was entertaining, but perhaps not in the way they intended! Looking at the flamingos and birds in the courtyard was cool, gardens are pretty. Didn't go to the spa, but it looked like a relaxing spot.

My fiancee and I just recently got back from a Vacation for a friends wedding at Dreams La Romana in Bayahibe and it was fantastic! We were booked in building 7, check in was a breeze, they brought our bags to our room - and a bottle of rum was waiting for us! Air Conditioning in the room was PERFECT!

Tip - the key card goes in the slot by the bathroom to turn on your lights, if this is your first time at a resort this might cause some distress, haha.

I'm a vegetarian and ate very well - try to avoid the Oceana Grill and French Restro as your options are extremely limited there. Long pants are required at the French and Italian dining options - and Flip Flops on men are a bad idea for your dinner/supper.

During the weekend it seemed there was a conference and buses of locals filled the resort, to the point service went extremely down hill. It was a bit too crowded - week days are the best days at this resort.

Don't purchase all your goods on the resort, or even at the vendors - it's cheaper at the Grocery and Shopping stores in the small fishing village of Bayahibe which is a 10 minute walk west of the resort. Price things at the resort before bargaining with the vendors on the beach - they will try and rip you off, and over charge. Be firm and you'll be happy with your purchases.

We swam with Sharks and Stingrays on a wonderful Catamaran cruise with the Marinararium Tour in Punta Cana area - the drive is a tad long (especially if you fly into Punta Cana too) but it was WELL worth it. Underwater cameras are a must!!

There were some complaints on here about the beach, and how it had a "rocky" landscape on some parts - trust me, the sand is plenty and the landscape isn't the rocks your thinking of, it's beautifully sculped coral - as seen in the photos posted. It's a real Dominican coast line, real life - stunning beautiful.

Alexis in the swim up bar is the most animated of all the employees - make sure to not forget your money at this bar for a good tip - he deserves it!

Room Tip: Buildings 5-8 are the newer upgraded rooms - a little more modernized than the other buildings.

Over all , great hotel, good service, excellent restaurants, small portion of beach that wasn't rockey.Great pools, plenty of beach chairs.Stayed in block 4 , great location .This was the first use of our RCI points vacation and was very happy with it. The only reason we(mid 60's couple) won't go back ,we prefer adults only hotels and a better beach

We have just returned from this hotel, The rooms were wonderful, we had a partial ocean view room 4236 - was next to the pool and overlooked the sea, no complaints at all, which is unusual for me as i usually change rooms on arrival. our son and wife had deluxe garden view in bloc 4 which had amazing high ceilings, rooms were always cleaned and fresh coffee and mini bar stocked up every day. They even supplied factor 15 sun cream for us.
The food was never bad and you have the luxury of going to each restaurant as many times as you want. we used to have our breakfast at the seaside grille not in the buffet restaurant, it is right on the sea front, and we loved the ambiance it created each morning eating in the sunshine.
The entertainment team were very enthusuastic and always full of energy, they can not be faulted.
You could change your beach towels as many times a day as you wanted.
Our only criticism was the nightly entertainment, at 9.30 every evening it was either watching a dance group or watching people make fools of themselves (although the dance group shows were good) we would have liked a bit more variety. That is just our opinion and were not saying it wasnt good it just wasnt for us. A couple of evenings at 10.30 they had dancing on the beach which was lovely and had a magician one night as well.
Overall this is one of the best resort hotels we have ever been to and would highly reccomend it to any body of any age, catered for young children and teenagers which we thought was fantastic as they could enjoy their holidays as well.
Well done to the Dreams management and staff :-)
