“near perfection”
Reviewed 7 March 2009

One couldn't really ask for more. If you take how little it cost it was near perfect. The food, the room, the people who worked there seemed to always be making sure everything was beyond satisfaction. the staff was incredible. Once you remembered you were on vacation the resort catered to relaxation. However if you wanted to participate there was also lots to do. There was always a bunch of like early 20's people out there to keep the fun going. Kids were kept much entertained as were the adults. If you want to learn to dance some hot Latin music there was always the chance.
The 'Palace' side of the hotel was more mellow with kids and lots of couples. Even the kids were well behaved. At night a couple of times I walked over the the 'Beach resort' side for some night club fun. Then walked back to the room via the great pizza place which was always open.
90% of the guests were Italian and French which added to the fun. The workers there speak five languages. Amazing. English was almost never spoken. Italian French German and Spanish was the dominant tongue.
I really cant think of anything that was not 'near perfect.'

Hi

We were at this hotel from january 23 to january 30.

We flew with Sunwing from Montréal, the flight was 21/2 hours late. The service was very good for registration and on the plane.

There was a group of 50 persons for a mariage in our plane and in the bus :). We were not part of it.

The check in was very fast, 5 minutes and we got the block we asked for. We were in block 56 and the room was ocean front wow.
The room was ok and everything was working very well. We did not have any problem. The made was very nice.

The employes are very nice and always ready to help. We had no problem to be understand in french or english.

The beach is beautiful and there is a lot of chair and it is very clean.

The buffet was ok, the food was good but warm, a little bit repetitive.
My husband was sick, but every year he is sick for one day.
I was sick just after him, I drank in his bottle so maybe it is because of that. I was sick on the last night only so didn't miss anything.
The 2 buffets at the beach hotel were also ok, the food was also warm.

The grounds are beautiful, full of flowers and trees, it is realy beautiful.

Went to Viva Palace and spent four days. After reading some reviews we went with an open mind. Checkin was smooth with friendly front desk. The grounds were beautiful, staff very friendly and helpful. We both enjoyed use of spa which was very reasonable and the beach area was immaculate. Its nice being allowed to use the Viva Beach amenties. We cannot speak spanish and understand very little but this wasn't much of a problem on the hotel property. This was more of a drawback when using taxis and experiencing the evening entertainment. Food was good in the a la carte restaurants. Dinner buffet was a little bland, and food was warm at best but we only went once. Breakfast was better in the buffet.(No Bacon). Weather was great. Don't asked the Dominicans how long it takes to get somewhere, because it is usually one and a half times more. Comparing Viva Palace with other AIs we've been to it was okay.

As with the last review we stayed at this property the same time they did, had 3 people sick in our group of 8. There are large cockroaches on this property and the symptoms of consuming (in the food) roach droppings fits with the symptoms we experienced for a 2-3 day period. You do have the option of having your room fumigated as they offer this with a door hanger just like maid service-I choose not to inhale poison while I am on holidays! If you stay on the 2nd or 3rd floor there are less roaches most of what we saw were on the main floor.

The rooms were all the same there is no superior, you just pay more to have a partial ocean/palm tree view. It is your standard box room with less than comfortable beds-not even a dresser or drawers for clothes. The bathroom was average, although family staying in a ground floor unit had no fan and the humidity was awful.

The beach was nice, the grounds kept clean always chairs available. If you come to enjoy the night life you should speak Italian, Spanish or French there are none or very few English speaking people. The nightly shows were horrible dancing/bad acting not worth sitting through. Most of the time the nights were less than entertaining a big change from staying at the Bavaro Princess in Punta Cana last year.

We had family at the Viva Beach (sister resort) connected to the property, they were unable to use the Palace property but we could use the Beach property. Really there was nothing special about one or the either Resort, they just charge more for the Palace (not sure why).

There are a lot of European families with very young children and mid aged to retired couples. The noise at night from the theater is unbearable even at 1am if you have a beach front room, then to wake you up at 7am are the screaming children who parents don't keep quiet while others might possibly be sleeping.

The food in the Palace main buffet was decent, breakfast was the least favorite, we were there for 2 weeks the food gets repetitive-rice, carrots and some kind of fish/meat there is always a pasta chef and breads. The Beach buffet had less selection and was not anything special. The Mexican a la cart made us sick, the Roca grill was decent but service was lacking, the Italian restaurant was good but basic food was served.

Overall this resort would be ok for a traveler on a budget if they did not charge so much. Oh and the Casino they advertise closed down a while back but the ad card is still in the rooms. Front desk did not answer the phone anytime we called for a wake up call yet when we walked by there was always at least 2 people working.

To top it off if you go from Vancouver/Calgary/Regina with Signature good luck getting any information through the rep. We got off the plane at 8pm, while most of the airport had cleared out we discovered after a half hour we were getting a taxi as they had nothing scheduled for us through Signature. We are on our 2 hour bus ride and the Signature guy gets off half way and leaves us with a Spanish speaking driver he has never met before(I found this out by asking questions, nice of them to tell us what was going on). A little unsettling driving through the country roads going 130km's with a random driver they hired. We went looking for the rep a few times during the day finally guest services called him and he was not coming in. When we arrived at the airport they had no idea when our welcome briefing was they told us to check with the hotel and they told us they had no idea, at the least they could have sent us upstairs to the area where the reps meet travelers.

I could go on and on..... the highlight of the trip was our adventure to Saona Island with SeaVis tours you can get a good deal from them (on the market street right outside the hotel) and they take you to places off the beaten path-less congested.

Just got back from a one week stay at the Dominicus Palace where we went as a group of about 50 people where we were celebrating the wedding of my brother in law. Overall the exterior of the hotel, beach, vegetation, pools and bars were excellent. Lots of activities and very good animation even if we didn't really participate as we travelled with our 1 1/2 yo daughter and spent most of the time keeping an eye on her. We could always find chairs and there was plenty of room for kids to play in the sand. The part where it gets bad is really when you enter the rooms. As previously mentionned in other reviews the bath wouldn't drain very fast so always ended up having our feet soaking even with a quick shower. Lots of mold and extreme wear of the taps. The room service was very good and the least we could say is that they did the best with what they had. As for the food, we tried pretty much all a la carte restaurants without having any problems getting reservations even if we would book for large groups, the service in those restaurants could get very long even if we would book early, we even had a power outage for a good 45mins at the Roca Grill. Food was actually not bad at all, my problem with it is that a lot of people got sick, even the brides mother on the big day. This was really a big turn off as it really messed up the trip for those people for a good 2 days in a row. I'm talking of at least 10 people out of 50 got it really bad and most of us didnt feel good for a day including myself, my wife and baby. Service is good as long as you can work your way with spanish. Lots of staff didn't speak a word other than spanish, inlcuding some waitresses at a la carte restaurants.

Bottom line, one can have a great time at this hotel if you don't get sick. I traveled to cuba and mexico as well and honnestly the Dominicus palace had the worst rooms...but again if you don't really mind the rooms and care more about the outside and activities you will have a good time. I guess we just weren't lucky. I think that for the same price we could have gotten better.

I read the reviews prior to our trip, and went with an open mind on what to expect. My husband and I love to scuba dive and booked a 4-night package deal. We felt we got a great deal for the money, and loved the resort! We flew into La Romana from San Juan and took the shuttle offered by the hotel, It was a 20-minute ride to the resort. The resort is well lanscaped and kept up very nicely. We did not feel any need to leave the resort, and although we walked to the shops right outside of the resort, we went right back in when we found that the resort had better gift item prices. The room was spacious, and we had no real complaints. The food served at the buffet we found to be very good and went there for most of our meals. We ate out at Viva Beach Cafe one night while the sun was setting and it was very romantic. That was the only restaurant we went to. I had signed up for the ByRequest card as suggested by others, and found no problems booking the restaurant at Guest Services. The other restaurants looked good, we just enjoyed the convenience and food at the buffets. Bar staff was friendly and more than generous (try the local rum drink mama juana). Red and white wine and Presidente beer is self-serve at meals (got to love that). The scuba diving was excellent and the dive staff very friendly. There was great snorkeling right off th beach as well. The beach was fun and we always went over to the side with all the activities going on. All day long there are exercises, games, and dance lessons, and if you don't want to participate, just sit back and watch! If you desire relaxation, there is a side of the beach on the Palace side that is quieter. There were very few Americans, mostly European vacationers, but most everyone spoke enough English that we could communicate without difficulty. We loved the variety of different people. Unfortunately, I cannot remark about the shows or the disco- we were so tired from scuba diving and playing all day, we never made it.
The only thing I did not like was the hard sales approach to view the Wyndham vacation time share. That got a little annoying, but I guess those guys are just trying to make a living. I just know I do not want to take an hour out of my vacation for anything!
We did offer tips at times when appropriate- just something to say thank you to the always friendly and helpful staff.
We will be back and bring the kids (ages 12 and 19)-they saw our pictures and cannot wait to go back in the summer with us!
