This is just a beautiful hotel with gorgeous landscaping, set within natural jungle. The rooms are spacious and well furnished. the terrace is lovely, but the hotel does not permit any chairs out there. (we do it anyway) My problem is I feel captive at the hotel. The evening entertainment is sparse. There are just so many times that you can take a shuttle to playa del Carmen with its hussle, bussle, shopping, and restaurants. My MAJOR problem with this hotel is the promotions. There newest one was that they are phasing out Mayan Palace, and if we do not upgrade we MAY not be able to get a room. Every 5 years I pay an EXTRA fee to have the room refurbished. We have been members for 8 years and it is still the same furniture. My thoughts and observations are they are now selling timeshares called BLISS, which is essentially the identical unit with different furniture. We tried to SELL our time share 2 years ago and were scammed out of THOUSANDS of dollars. If you just want to spend a quiet week at a beautiful hotel in Mexico, you will have a wonderful week by the pool sucking up the sunshine. If you really want to see Mexico, shop, feast, explore, I would recommend Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Cozumel. Stay away from the time share promotion, you will likely regret it!.
Do not forget to go to Havana moon restaurant. It does have dancing and live music in the evening. Some groups are better than others.

Room Tip: we refer the upper floor facing the jungle. We are in the tree tops watching the birds and the butterflies. The stirs are great exercise but the hotel has efficient elevators in all of the buildings.

We stayed from December 6 to 13, my husband, myself, our 11 year old and both sets of our parents went with us. This is our second year coming with our extended family. We stayed in a one bedroom suite (3134) and we had the kitchenette that has worked just fine for us in the past. Our parents stayed in a two-bedroom suite (3128 and 3126). The beds are very very firm but if you ask they will put a foam mattress topper on and that makes the beds more comfortable. My parents felt the pillows were too firm for their liking so they took the pillows from the couches and put pillowcases on them and used those.
We reserved the free shuttle from the airport by emailing the concierge 45 days prior to leaving, no complaints or problems.
When we arrived they were going to put us in two different buildings which was not acceptable to us, so we kindly asked if they had any suites that were together in the same building. They did some checking and located a one bedroom and a two bedroom in the same building (11). The complex has 20 buildings and building one is the closest to the pool. As I have reviewed before the resort is located in the jungle with no ocean view rooms - so if this is what you are looking for this may not be the place for you to stay. The only thing the resort could improve is check-in, it took about 45 minutes to get two families checked in.
The resort has several restaurants on site however I felt that the restaurants were really overpriced in the past so this time we only ate at Balache which is located pool side (at night turns into Frieda's) we ate there on our arrival night and planned to go to Wal-mart the next morning.
We took the mom's with us to the Wal-mart in Playa del Carmen and got the weeks worth of groceries since we pre-planned our menu - we went equipped with a grocery list. No problems with shopping at Wal-mart - not sure if there are two Wal-marts in Playa but the one we went to this year was much nicer, newer and cleaner than the one we went to last year.
The resort is off set from the main gate which leads to highway 307, we walked to the front gate with both mom's and even though they struggled a bit due to mobility issues they have no problems walking to and from the gate.
Yes, there are time share sales people that will ask if you would be interested in hearing about your "benefits" we sternly advised that we are not interested. We received one phone call during a rain storm to see if we would again like to hear about our "benefits" and I told them again that we were not interested - we did not receive any additional calls while there. We have a vacation club membership with Global and have no interest in purchasing a timeshare.
We love this resort because of the jungle atmosphere, it is beautiful and I love to walk so the acreage of the resort doesn't sway me. If you do not or cannot walk there are golf carts that take you to the pool, your building or to the other resort complexes on the property.
The pool area is absolutely the best - we never had a problem finding a place or chairs to use when at the pool - they do not allow saving. Their cabanas are a great deal, $30US to rent but you get $30 in food and beverage credit while utilizing the cabana. You can rent them for that day or the next day, you must claim by 11:00am or they will release to another renter.
The beach is being revamped by bringing in sand to rebuild the beach, the ocean is right on top of a reef system - we are not ocean swimmers so no problem for us. However there is a clear spot available for swimming to the left of the resort.
The resort does have several activities on the beach and pool, they offer bike tours (however children have to be 13 years old and reserved the prior day). The grounds includes a beautiful golf course however we don't golf but we walked it.
The purpose of this trip was to find much needed relaxation, time with our aging parents and fun with our son - this trip fit the bill. We will be back in 2014.
If you have any questions please let me know.

We just returned from our trip to Mayan Palace in Riviera Maya. Friends of ours invited us to share their time share at the Mayan Palace in Riviera Maya. The place is absolutely beautiful and well taken care of with hard working friendly service. It is huge and if you get a room in the higher numbered buildings you will have a 20 minute walk to the pool and beach if you cannot get the shuttle. The shuttle is not always running on time and you will wait for it. My friends did complain and request a room at a building closer to everything. The manager did get us that room and it made a huge difference.

The first insult was that they had no free Wi-Fi. Not that I wanted to be on a computer but McDonalds offers free Wi-Fi. The other downside to this resort was that the beach was so rocky you could not get in the water. There was one little strip of sand top go out into the water. We walked up the beach to a smaller resort that had a beautiful beach and everyone was in the water. I couldn't understand why the Mayan Palace had a huge pool and such a poor beach.

There was no night life or dancing to keep anyone at the resort at night. Simple DJ at a club would be fine. The food is super expensive. A Simple hamburg was $17-$19. The most disappointing thing about this resort was that it did not have a hot tub. What resort does not have a hot tub? There was a hot tub in the gym that you had to pay for to use???

I felt bad for our friends who had spent a huge amount of money on their time share here. They had come down earlier in the week and stayed at a smaller all inclusive resort down the road and were much more happier with it than the Mayan. While the Mayan is a huge beautiful resort, it missing things that could make it great. We won't come back again or recommend it to anyone. Go to a smaller all inclusive with a great beach. You will have more fun.

We had an hour long photo shoot with Alex from DreamArt photography. He was awesome!!! We were hoping to get just 3 good photos, but ended up buying 30!!!! We have never had such a great experience with a photographer. The shots were candid and crystal clear. Best of all we have the copyrights to the photo and a disk to print whatever sizes we choose. Thank you so much for the great memories!!! We highly recommend that anyone who stays at the Mayan Palace take an hour to capture some great memories with DreamArt photography!!!

Great place for families. Spacious rooms. Good food. Many kids activities and pool sizes to accommodate kids of all ages. We've been going here for years and they keep making more enhancements to the resort every year. Have many great memories here.
