This was a great choice if you're taking kids between the ages of 2-17. We live in Texas so it was a quick direct flight and reasonably priced for what you get. My husband and I stayed at the adult only sister hotel, the Iberostar Grand Hotel Paraiso, a few years ago and we were very impressed so we chose Paraiso Maya for our beach vacation with our seven year old. While Paraiso Maya wasn't as luxurious as the Grand Paraiso, it was still clean, well kept, and offered a fun "sensory overload" for our daughter.

Overall Appearance
--Grounds are beautifully kept and offer a lush tropical setting everywhere you walk so you truly feel like you're on vacation.
--Buildings are color coded and numbered so it helps you keep track of where you are, which is helpful because the place is enormous!
--Keep your eyes peeled, there are critters everywhere and they are not scared of humans! They look like a cross between an ant eater, monkey, and raccoon. On our second day my husband saw an iguana the size of an alligator resting on a branch. Think of it as a beach/zoo adventure all in one!

Rooms
--TIP- Before you arrive, request building 61. Based on other reviews I made this request by emailing the hotel a week prior and my husband thought I was a hero!!! This building is right next to the main pool, closest to the beach, and next to two of the buffet restaurants. I requested the third floor so it was extremely quiet. The only downside is that it's further away from the main lobby which is where the main dinner restaurants are located.
--The rooms weren't anything fancy, but they were clean. Keep in mind it's a family resort so there is a little more wear and tear from all the kiddos. The mini fridge was fully stocked with bottled water and juice daily. Our daughter loved the animal shaped towels left on her bed each day, as well as the mini hammock on the balcony. Another plus, which saved us when we needed to convince our daughter to take a break from the sun, was the English channels on the room TV. While we had hoped to get away from technology, it was nice to turn on cartoons she could understand.

Pools/Beach
--There certainly are no shortage of pools!!! Everywhere we walked we came upon new pools. The main pool, next to building 61, was always PACKED! if you want good seats you literally need to save them at 6 am, this goes for the beach huts too. SET YOUR ALARM!!!!
--There is a lazy river that is a lot of fun. The resort will rent you floats (outrageously priced), or you can take your own floats and blow them up at the beach shop directly across from the wave pool for free. I bought $3.99 round tubes at Target, blew them up when we got there, then gave them to an arriving family the day we checked out.
--Pirate Ship pool- you must find this pool! It has slides and a 100 gallon bucket that fills with water and then dumps all over the kids every 2 minutes; it's a blast for the kids.
--The beach had plenty of seating, but get there early if you want a hut. The sand is nicely raked every morning, but you won't find any shells. While there are no sand bars in the water, there was a lot of seaweed and rocks in certain spots. Overall, the beach was great for swimming once you got away from the seaweed.
--Excellent snack bar that's open all day. Friendly bar tenders.
--Fun beach activities hosted by the hotel staff for adults and kids.

Food
--The food was my biggest complaint. However, given that this is a family resort, the food was catered more to the kids. If you ask our daughter, she'd tell you it was one of her favorite parts of the trip! It was mostly buffet with a bunch of very random stations so be prepared to have ballpark style nachos, deli meat, and perhaps an occasional salad. We noticed at breakfast there were a lot of dinner leftovers from the night before. Again, kind of random, but okay if you're flexible enough to just go with it.
--Main lobby restaurants *VERY IMPORTANT* there are some nice seated restaurants in the main lobby, but be sure to BOOK RESERVATIONS AS SOON AS YOU ARRIVE.

Room Tip: Building 61, third floor

Dear guest,

On behalf of the entire team of IBEROSTAR Paraiso Maya, we would like to thank you for letting us know how your vacations went at our resort.

We are pleased to know that you had a great time with us and that you and your family enjoyed our facilities.

Regarding your comment about our food, we are aware that this is an important aspect of your holiday, and our Executive Chef and his team of cooks are working every day to improve and satisfy our national and international guests’ different palates. Similarly, the food variation in our buffets is part of our quality standards and no food from previous services is placed again in any of the restaurants. We are sorry if we did not live up to your expectations on that point, we will keep working on improving it. Thank you for your relevant comments.

Thank you for your loyalty! We look forward to seeing you again at our hotel for your 3rd visit and give you the excellent service that you and your family deserve.

Sincerely,
Quality Manager
IBEROSTAR Mexico.

I felt it was necessary to write this review based on our most recent family experience. I would like to thank TripGuy.com and Lomas travel for their customer service. If you are planning a trip, I highly recommend reaching out to Mitch at TripGuy.Com

The Resort facilities, cleanliness and service were a 5. The Family junior suite is by far the best for families who like to spread out. The staff, grounds crew and servers could not be anymore pleasant. We are a family of 4 with a 15 and 13 year old and we all thoroughly enjoyed the resort.
The major downside to this resort would be the food. l am a bit picky when it comes to my food and I felt like the resort chooses not to address this ongoing problem. Breakfast consists of your traditional resort breakfast buffet and unfortunately turns out to be the best meal of the day. The rest of the day is filled with meats and fishes of different varieties that in my opinion were sub par. Room service after 11 was less than desirable and had a minimum wait of 45 minutes.
I had low expectations of the food based on previous reviews and unfortunatley the resort did nothing to change my opinion.
I would highly recommend this resort for anyone who wants a 4 star resort with a 1 star food rating.

Room Tip: Building 65 is right in the middle.

Food (1) breakfast is good, (2) lunch is very good, (3) dinner was OK. Was expecting a little more when it came to food because this is a 5-start place, but it rarely met expectations. I'd recommend a little less variety and concentrate on quality instead. I really like the lunch buffet, by far the best of all meals.

Pools were great, very large and accommodating. I really liked the variety of smaller and larger connecting pools.

Service was excellent all the way around. Only 1 hiccup was during check-in when he couldn't find our reservation because somehow he kept reading the wrong name off the itinerary we gave him.

Room Tip: I'd recommend rooms closer to the front, more accessible at night and for dinner.

This was the best family vacation so far. The room, food, service, shows and pools were great. We tried every restaurant and have no complaints. The steakhouse was awesome. The Marina (mainly served fish) was absolutely wonderful. The Mexican restaurant was great. The Japanese hibachi restaurant was ok. The pools were never super crowded and were well kept. The grounds were absolutely immaculate. We can not wait to return.
I can not put into words how wonderful Iberostar Paraiso Maya was!!

We had a great time at Iberostar Paraiso Maya...friendly staff. Tennis drills were fun and golf course was a nice course. The Spa was superior to my expectations. Food is just okay. Beach is nice but claim your chairs early...people stake out their spots the night before.
