Wonderful experience, great pools, extremely well manicured grounds, great rooms, staff makes you feel pampered and food in all the restaurants is exceptional. Expect a long wait for restaurants if you do not have reservations, especially on weekend nights. I would definitely stay here again if on the Mexican Rivera.

Room Tip: Room was a hotel room in the "Jungle" area in building 12. Hot tub in room, sliding doors...

We rented a time share unit for 2 weeks in January. The first week the weather was iffy, and there was not much for kids to do. Like nothing. The kids club is not as advertised, the concierge desk told me that for $25 per day a child could go and participate. When I got down to the indoor restaurant they were setting up a Wii and told me that they don't supervise the children, if the kids want to get up and leave they let them. The food and drinks here are RIDICULOUSLY expensive. $8.50 for a virgin cocktail???? The no cash policy is silly, they set a limit on your "account" and we were refused our take out lunch when we unknowingly reached the limit that was not discussed with us. This was extremely embarrassing, as well as time consuming to rectify. There was no posting of activities, the only thing I saw consistently was the herds of people being led around by the time share reps. The room was nice, however a fully equipped kitchen means a small "beer fridge" and a cooktop and microwave. We had to buy utensils and storage containers at the Mega. The beach here just plain sucks. If you're a beach person, this is not for you. With this having been our 5th trip to the Mayan Riviera we know what to expect, and the Grand Mayan is ok...nice grounds, overpriced, beautiful pools but nothing to do other than swim during the day. We would not return here.

We had visited the Grand Mayan in N.Vallarta and we wanted to compare.
The free transport was waiting although you had to hunt to find them. When you exit the airport they are off to the right. We arrived at night after 8 so no time share hassles. We were told that later this year time share people will be removed from airport and off resort contact will be limited. This is due to the new president. That was good news.
The check in was quick and given a good room in building 3.
Lots of pools here. All different depths and locations. The GM pool is quiet. The beach does have a lot of coral. This area is part of the second largest coral reef in the world . But if you walk left or right there is sand beach. Don't believe that it's as horrible as everyone writes. There are flamingoes and crocodiles. Interesting to see. Numerous restaurants but nothing we found outstanding. They were adequate but pricey. Perhaps the tastiest was green break for breakfast and late lunch. Havana moon was okay and Balache good but picked up Montezumas revenge from the mixed salad. The deli/ grocery store has good sandwiches and snacks
Attended the time share presentation. It was an update. Sales rep was very good but the sales manager was a dick. Received what we were promised and it took 9:30 - 12:00 breakfast included.
Wife went to the spa and said it was good but overpriced. There is a nice little juice bar in the spa/gym on the second floor. It has an ocean view and smoothies were good.
The shuttle to Playa is available for 50 pesos each outside of the Myan. First one is @9 the last pickup from playa @9. The local van service is for 20 pesos each. We took it into puerto morelas. Then they let you off and you catch a taxi into town for 25 pesos. A taxi from the resort to p.morelas is 250 pesos.
It's not far to walk to the road outside the resort 15 minutes from GM lobby. They discourage this cause they want you to spend money at the resort or use their cabs. Should try public transport at least once. If you take the hotel shuttle in playa they change the drop off weekly. First week we were here it was at the mega. The second week it was at a jewellery store on 5th. We preferred eating in playa for the variety.
They do have planned activities around the resort daily. We went to the night sky presentation and it was a joke.Movie night on the beach was good on Tuesday nights.
All room views are jungle view. Some of the outer buildings are a walk but doable. The shuttles have a schedule and are colour coded. We didn't use them much and just as easy to walk. Hotel rooms or suites do not have coffee pots or fridges. Have to move up to a one bedroom to enjoy these. ALL staff are very good and helpfull.
There is a Cirque de Sol being built and will be open in November of this year. It is on the other side of the highway but will be connected by rail to the hotel rooms.
The resort overall is an A but the remoteness keeps it out of the + category. If you like remote this is for you. There are lots of tours in the area from chichen itza to tulum to cenotes to climb able coba. Area is spread out. We prefer a more condensed offering . Overall good vacation.

We invited another couple and a friend to join us at the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya January 6-12, 2014. We are members of the Grand Bliss in Nuevo Vallarta (a sister resort). It was the first time visiting the Grand Mayan Riviera Maya. Despite the not-so-cooperating weather we all had a wonderful time. The restaurants all were top notch, the service was always impeccable from the servers, bartenders, front desk, concierge, and maids. The golf course was excellent except for the fact that it ate most of my golf balls.
Our friends had not been to Mexico before and were impressed, vowing to come back to the area.
A little warning - the resort is not near any towns, so it is a not so cheap cab ride to Playa de Carmen if you want to get groceries. There is a convenience store on site but the prices are expensive.
There is a shuttle to Playa which is reasonable but runs on a time schedule. We did go to Playa twice for the social aspect of our trip - it was great fun.
Remember that this is a "time share - vacation ownership" resort and they will ask you to join them to discuss the advantages of joining their system. Being members already, it is less painful, but non members could get the hard sell which we experienced the first time.
We definitely would recommend this resort to any one - couples and/or families!

Room Tip: This resort does not have any ocean view rooms. We would recommend asking for a view of the jungle...

Perfection. From the restaurants Tramonto, Gong, Havana Moon and Del Lago buffets to the massive network of pools with swim up bars with an 11 am happy hour where you get 2 for 1 drinks to the impeccable service, cleanliness and comfort of the rooms. I had not one bad experience during my 8 day 7 night stay. A beautiful property with extremely well trained personnel. I cannot wait to go back again!

This was a return trip for us although we didn't review the last trip. I am noticing that other reviews are confusing the Mayan Palace with the Grand Mayan. Don't. The first is much older and doesn't have the facilities of the Grand Mayan available by wrist band. Also I read that the beach is rocky. It isn't. The beach is fine. The shallow water is rocky in most but not all places. Wear Crocks. We were told that the rocky shallow water is a problem all along that part of the coast line and they were going to try and change that in the future.
We had a two bedroom suite in bldg. 5. A bit of a walk to some places but not real long. There is the shuttle. We were ground floor, not our choise but we were told that many visitors liked the ground floor. We had a large patio with the plunge pool. The weather was a little cool to use it. The weather in January was beautiful, mid to upper 70"s in the day time and lower 60's at night.
We had two jacuzzi's in the suite. The showers were good but the very hot water could have a little more pressure. (a "green resort") We attached out DVD player and had movies each night.
The best happy hour is at the Wine Bar. Half price wine and appitisers from the Japanese and Italian restaurants. Inside or out on the terrace.
We bought beer, wine and liquor offsite and made a few meals. We did the pricy breakfast buffet once and later had a snack for dinner. You can spend a lot for dinner if you aren't careful. The prices have gone up but now include tax and tip. If you have exceptional service you might add a little more for a tip. We did.
We read about the hard sell for sales. The meal alone was about an hour and then the trips around the campus and then the look-and-see. Sales are never 60-90 minutes. We had a very pleasant time with Sally. A much better time than the last time we were there. Sales management has changed and claim a much better "warm and fuzzy" approach now.
We walked a lot, the landscapeing is about beautiful as you will ever see. They also have caged crockadiles and many other birds and animals loose in the landscape. We didn't play golf but heard often that the par 3 course was a good challenge. The Green Break Rest. has a lesser expensive breakfast overlooking the golf course and a 3-5 happy hour.
The resort has many activities listed in a schedule. Perhaps not as manny and an A.I. resort but A.I.'s expect you not to venture off campus.
The employees were all pleasant and helpful. Some couldn't speak any English when asked a question. A smile and a shrug of the shoulders. Joel was out concierge and was always helpful.
This turned out to be as good of a vacation as we could expect.

Room Tip: Building 7. Closest to activities.

We went here on a RCI timeshare. We overall had a great time. The marketing /sales pitch which was to be 60-90 minutes ended up at 3 1/2 hours, with us finally getting up and walking away. The game of let me check you out after saying no only to move into another area and have another person trying to sell you a time share for $63,000.00, then another room or area for another person to attempt the same thing. We consisted of two couples and got to the point that we were very put out by the end. The said just go down to claim your free gift, which was $99.00 and a free week with RCI again. After all the problems lately with RCI I would fore go any meeting with them to talk about a time share unless you are really looking for one. The beach was rocky and the area they are purposing a beach club is worse. When we arrived and left the check in there was really no direction of what the resort had, schedules of events (which were poor), alot of resorts have nightly shows. There big thing was bingo/casino night, Karoke, which was poorly attended. They had an area which you were not allowed as we were at the Mayan Palace which is part of the Grand Mayan. Which had a nicer beach, pools and covered areas. We did pay for the one big night show which was $73.00 a person which was great. You pay for your tickets to fly and then everything at the resort you were charged for to include bottled water in your room. So don't see the benefit. We ended up going to Walmart in Play del carmen to pickup coolers, water, drinks, snack and other things. Example: A bottle of water at the resort in your rooms bathroom was $21.00 USD and at Walmart was a large jug for $2.50. Which was 5 to 6 times the volume. We have been to Mexico over 5 times and stayed at other all inclusive resorts for less and had better shows and things to do which they explained on your arrival. Not worth the free break, sales pitch or the money.

Room Tip: There grounds are set up running from the beach to the back of the property. The lower the building...
