We just came back from a week vacation at this resort. All in all it was a nice relaxing vacation, we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. Below is a breakdown of overall ratings for the various areas of the resort.

Condition/Upkeep/Maintenance Staff: 10/10 - Overall the resort is kept very nicely. The pools are always clean, the grounds are unbelievable, and the room cleaners do a great job. The resort itself is huge but somehow they manage to stay on top of it keeping it very clean. The resort is beautiful.

Resort: 9/10 - Overall the resort is very nice. There are lots of pools, nice restaurants, a spa, shops, and excursions that can be booked through the resort. The resort is huge so if you are an elderly couple I would think twice before coming here as you have to walk a lot to get to different places around the resort. In one of the stores they have a small grocery department which is nice, fresh coffee, snacks, and a jewelry shop. All in all the resort is one of the best we have stayed at so far, it was really nice.

Beach: 1/10 - The only time we even went to the beach was the first day we got there to check it out. There isnt much of a beach, it consists of huge rocks that make it impossible to go out into the ocean. They line the beach and even into the water. My friend and I went snorkeling and there are rocks all the way out like 100yds from the shoreline. It was very disappointing to say the least but other reviewers have pointed this out as well. I suppose you could hangout in the cabanas/chairs at the beach however that didnt appease to us as we couldnt get in the water. The sand itself is decent, its not soft as its made up of a lot of tiny rocks and corral. Overall it was disappointing but it didnt ruin the vacation. If you are looking for a resort with a nice beach, do not come here.

Restuarants: 10/10 - Overall the food was very good. They have italian, japanese, a ceviche bar, mexican, and american. Every restaurant we ate at was great, we never had a bad meal. The prices are pretty reasonable to be honest, I wasnt shocked at all by the prices. They have a nice variety and at all hours you can find at least a couple open.

Golf: 1/10 - This golf course was probably the worst course I have ever golfed at. Its a Par 3, 18 hole course, but the course itself is in terrible condition. The greens are the worse, they have sand all over them making it nearly impossible to make a putt over 4ft. The clubs you can rent are decent, but bring extra water as you are only given a small bottle and there are no refill stations on the course. I wouldnt recommend you spending $55/person to golf here, save it until you go back home. If you do decide to go, bring golf balls and a glove as these are also additional $$$ if you forget it.

Staff: 5/10 - Overall the staff at the resort is very friendly and nice. For them I would give them a 10/10 as they were very accomodating and were of great assistance. The only downfall is the sales people. They literally have a staff of about 50 employees who are solely responsible for selling timeshares. Luckily we got this "meeting" over on the morning of our first day, but we literally had to sit through a 3hr presentation and went through 5 employees after telling them all "NO" we will not but a timeshare. We were here because we used my friends grandparents timeshare to stay, but they still try to sell you on this and its very annoying. It did get us 10% off our bill, a free visit to Tulum, and a free breakfast however you will waste a good portion of your day sitting through this. I think they would be better off cutting all this staff, hiring only a couple of people so that once you arent hounded and actually want to buy a timeshare you could approach them instead of vice versa which leaves an unpleasant experience.

Again all in all we had a great week long vacation, the resort is beautiful, the grounds are nice, the beach is terrible but if you plan on relaxing at the resort pools and maybe going to see other beaches this resort would fit the bill.

We traveled with our young adult children and found the Grand Mayan to be full of entertainment, beauty, and hospitality. We live to play games and Charly made it more fun by offering up free drinks every day for winning games of Black Jack, bingo, beanbag toss, mini golf, soccer, water polo, etc.

The property is gorgeous. The beach is not swimmable, but is beautiful none the less. The resort more than makes up for this with an enormous pool. The landscaping is immaculate and the architecture is amazing. The stag are all friendly and professional and most (but not all) spoke English.

The two downsides to the property are 1) WiFi is too expensive ...$95 a week per device is not even in the realm of acceptable reality... And 2) I it is far from a Wal-Mart... A taxi ride was $30 each way, which almost (but not quite) offset the cost of the food at their own grocery store. Eating on property cost $175 for four of us (including two drinks each.)

Nonetheless, I'd go back another time or two since the upsides significantly outweigh the downsides.

The grounds are beautiful and are well maintained. All the staff were pleasant, helpful and assisted if you asked. What is upsetting is the 15% higher cost of everything, mandatory 15 or 18% and a ridiculous price for WiFi (anywhere in toenail is free)! An example of such pettiness
- we gad to wait for our room so the desk gave us a discount voucher for one of their restraunts
- which was nice - but thet put a 15% discount sticker over the original 25% sticker. If you are an owner of Grand Mayan I would think you could at least get free WiFi.

Also there are no adult pools.

We chose the Grand Mayan for a family vacation before our eldest moves to Europe to work on his Master's. We booked through RCI. We were aware of the negative stories regarding the Sales team going in.

The resort itself is extremely large; the Grand Mayan is just one of many Vida properties on the grounds. It is beautifully landscaped; there are birds, iguanas, lizards, crocodiles and flamingos throughout. There are 8 residences; we were in a 1 bedroom unit on the 2nd floor of building 5. It was spacious and comfortable for 4 adults. The walk to the main infinity pool (spectacular) is approximately 10 minutes. There is a smaller pool for guests of the Grand Mayan alone. It was not kept as clean as the larger one was (plenty of bird droppings unfortunately).

The restaurants were mostly located around the main pool. We ate at Balche-lunch, Frieda-dinner (same place but changes name), Havana Moon, Del Lago (breakfast buffet) and Tramonto (absolutely worth every penny). Some restaurants were closed even though the resort literature stated they were open 7 days/week. We ordered room service twice after excursions out. We had pizza both times ( thin crust, good sauce)

The drinks were pricey so we limited our purchases to the happy hours.
We purchased some supplies (breakfast items and beer/water) at Jade. Prices were high, but the location convenient. On another occasion, returning from an excursion to Coba, we stopped at a convenience store and spent a fraction of the price on the same items.

The staff is very courteous. The cooling pool on our terrace was covered in bird droppings when we checked in. It had obviously been overlooked. Within 10 minutes of calling housekeeping, we had someone at the door ready to clean it up.

There were shuttles readily available to take you around the grounds or in to Playa del Carmen.

We had booked 2 excursions with outside companies before our arrival to Mexico. This did not seem to sit well with the staff of the Grand Mayan. On our first excursion, the driver was not allowed onto the grounds to pick us up. We were told to meet him outside the security gate. We noticed no such problem with tourists at other resorts. The Grand Mayan seems to have a negative reputation among tour companies because of this.

We decided to sacrifice what amounted to 2 hours, on our last day, to hear the member's update. We had been told by different sales staff anywhere from 15 minutes to 45 minutes to 1.5 hrs. Anyway, that sacrifice allowed us to have deducted $4400 pesos from our final bill as well as getting a free buffet breakfast for our family...a very good outcome for us.

Our family stayed at this private resort In August 2013. The place was really nice! This place is more for relaxing not much to do, unless you pay for activities. I would probably not stay here again because, I wish there was more stuff to do,Unless you paid, but overall it's a nice place and if you just want to relax its perfect for you.

First I must say that this resort is beautiful! It is huge, and there are several other "High End Resorts and Residences" in this "complex! Trams (shuttles) are available every ten minutes or so to ride you to where ever you're going on the property. There is an shuttle into Playa Del Carmen too costing $5.00 per person each way. You might want to spend some time in "Playa" grocery shopping for your "kitchenette" in the Grand Maya (food, alcohol, paper towels, everything that you might need can be bought at Walmart or the Mega store.......believe me this is definitely a good idea! To buy "Anything" on the resort costs a lot more money! Less than a half hour ride by shuttle into Playa (sight see while there).
If you read many of the other reviews posted here you will get a very good idea of what to expect. It is definitely a beautiful place. If you are used to "All-Inclusives" the prices here may not be what you expect, but added up and then compared to an all-inclusive, maybe not too bad!
Well, This being my last full day here, I feel that I'm going to miss this place when I get home tomorrow evening, but I will have fond memories of all the gracious staff, and "my man" Andres Sanchez over in the Havana Moon restaurant! Practically everyone who works here treats you in an friendly, courteous, and helpful manner. So enjoy!!! Caution: Beware the Time Share People here, and the "entrepreneurs" in Playa :) .....
