“El Dorado Royale destination”
Reviewed 13 February 2012

We just returned from Cancun, traveling with friends for their sons wedding. El Dorado Royale was the destination wedding location. It was definately a 5 Star resort, all inclusive. The restaurants were great, we ate at Cocotal which was wonderful. The lobster lasanga was great. Jo Jo's has wonderful conch and corn chowder. The entertainment was really good, better than we've had at a few other resorts. I did the yoga class every morning and it was wonderful along with the gym which was very nice. Our room was very clean and we had a jacuzzi in the room which we did not use and a hammock on the patio which we enjoyed.
The beach was fine, smaller than some places we've stayed and they had plenty of places to relax in the shade with little cabanas and thatch covered lounges. The weather was pretty windy so the ocean was quite rough. They have large barriers in the water that look like whales but this is to control the beach erosion. If they didn't have these there would probably be no beach.
The only drawback we had with this resort was it was so far away from Cancun or Playa del Carma that we pretty much just stayed on the resort. Shuttles were available but only ran certain days and we missed those or take a taxi and that was $35.00 one way so could be expensive if you wanted to go off the resort several times. I like being a little closer to a town or village so we can explore and shop. If your main goal is to just relax and unwind and not go off a resort once your there this place would fit all your needs and more. Seven restaurants and even more bars, everyone was extremely friendly and made you feel very welcome.

Room Tip: We stayed in the garden view jacuzzi suite rooms and they were just fine. We were seldom in the roo...

we have never returned to a hotel before but spent our second holiday at Eldorado Royale in Riveria Maya this January. It was still of a very high standard, very clean, excellent food, smiling polite service with one exception at the small shop next to the gym the staff are snooty, rude and unwelcoming. We had one day of rain in 2 weeks otherwise weather fab. We had one compliant about a nightdress going missing which was resolved to our satisfaction. highly recommend this hotel which has spoilt us for anywhere else now!!

Room Tip: ask for one near to the main pool and Jo Jo's

Just arrived back from the El Dorado Royale Resort this past weekend with my husband. We did not want to leave. We stayed 1 week room 5401 it was a swim up suite. The room was very nice.

Room:
Good size room, TV was just fair, bed quite comfortable, we didn't use the Jacuzzi tub i'm a little weird about germs, bathroom had decent amenities, blow dryer was ok. Outside on the deck we had a hammock that we didn't end up using not comfy at all. Patio furniture was nice. Our particular room was set back from the other so we only got an hour or so of sun on our lawn chairs in the pool part but other ones had sun most of the day. It was nice to be able to just jump right in the pool on a hot afternoon.

Food:
Amazing food, amazing service, amazing atmosphere!!!!
We really enjoyed the D'italia restaurant at the Casitas but the regular D'Italia was really nice too. If you love steak have the Filet Mignon!!! All the other restaurants were really great too. 5 course meals. Mind you the first 2 courses are small but the flavor is amazing. It was really nice to go a restaurant where they pull out your chair for you place the napkin on your lap. Just a really nice touch :) They did this for every meal.
Breakfast was great at Fuentes and you have to try the banana pancakes at Kampai soooo good!!!
Lunch was great to just grab a burger and fries at the pool side restaurant.

Things to Do:
We really didn't do a whole lot but relax and eat. We did the horseback riding it was nice wear jeans though not shorts :) Learned that one the hard way. We also went into Playa Del Carmen on the free shuttle thru the resort book ahead of time it fills up quickly. Felt really safe no problems at all.
They had activities all day long pool side. They were cute and comical at times.

Beverages:
Amazing we had the chance at La Isla to sit next to the bartender at the swim up bar and he made us quite a few amazing drinks and shots. Premium liquor which was nice. Fell in love with Bahama Mama's soo yummy!!! If you like fruity drinks.

Entertainment:
I can't say too much about this because almost every night we were in bed before the nightly entertainment. We are late 20's and we could hardly stay up past 9:30pm. The fresh air is tiring. The one night we stayed up to see the entertainment was the International Show and it was anything to brag about, we've cruised before so we're used to quite and elaborate show every night and this just didn't come close. I can appreciate the dancers and the hard work but the choreography was way off and no set designs at all. So that was a bit of a let down. But i cab't speak for the other shows the rest of the week.

Overall Service:

Not bad at all. Everyone is very friendly unless you catch someone that is almost done their shift at 11:00pm that doesn't really want to take you to your room, but does otherwise besides growling. This left a sour feeling at the end of our trip. We may have just been over tired it was at 10:30 at night :) Use the concierge service for your section they are very helpful and friendly.

Tipping:

We tipped pretty well everyone that gave use great service. Here's a little hint in your bar fridge they give you 4 beer not enough especially for us because the first night it rained really hard so we couldn't get to the bar. So the next day my husband rolled up a 5 dollar USD and placed it in an empty beer can and the next day there was 14 beer in our fridge. It was great. Also it's not the maid that does the beer it's another guy.

Overall:

Great resort, i would definitely go back. Oh 1 more thing if you have 2 free hours to go to the time share meeting you can get a free massage or candle light dinner it was soo bad. We knew exactly what it was and made it clear we had no intentions of purchasing. We went on a cloudy day so it wasn't a waste of a sunny day. Maybe try to convince them to give you both things to make it really worth your while.
Next time i think i would stay at the Casitas. I just like to accommodations better

we spent January 11-18, 2012 at El Dorado royale in Riveria Maya. The restaurants, facilities, grounds, shows and beach were all first class. The restaurant d'Italia was as good as any New york restaurant with great service, outstanding food and expertly run by Ernesto, a very professional Maitre D'. Jo Jo's was great for lunch and Cocatel was very good for breakfast. The pools and Beach and the created lagoons were very enjoyable. The lagoons with loads of sealife were the upside of the 'sandbags". The shows wee very enjoyable. It was a great vacation and we will return next winter!

Room Tip: The lagoon has many fish. Feed them with bread from the morning buffet and they will jump out of th...

Stayed Jan 10th - 24th 2012

The Good

This hotel is set in lovely, well kept grounds and operates the golf carts to take you around it as it is very large. The bar staff are great and nothing is too much trouble for them and the drink selection is one of the best i have had anywhere, with so many branded drinks to choose from. All staff are generally very friendly and always speak when they pass. The hotel is a short distance to Playa Car or Cancun and they operate a free bus to get there. Maids brought lots of towels and mini bar stocked daily and room cleaned.

The Bad

The beach is not very good and has a lot of sand bags as the beach got riuned due to a hurricane a few years back, we knew this before we went so wasnt a big deal, you can get into the water still and i'm only mentioning this bacause of lot of people complain about this, but its not the hotel's fault for a hurricaine. You can always get a sunbed no problem at the beach if you are about early, beware that if you go off to get food ect, people stole your beds and in the afternoon they would set up dining on the beach and would move you so they could do this. bed around the pool were always available but you get little sun as they have so many palm trees shading them.

THE ROOM.
Well this is meant to be a 5 star hotel, the room was damp smelling and on parts of the wall there was damp growing on it, decor was old and the drapes were damaged and didnt match around the bed or the bath like in the picture, the best part of the room was the bathroom with its big walk in shower. Hot water was really hard to get any for the shower or jacuzzi. No umberella for when it rained, no hammock as advertised. Was offered a room change to one that smelt like the previous guests had spent their holiday urinating all over the room, this even took away the damp smell.

THE FOOD

This was by far the worst i have had anywhere, it is not a la carte at all, its small rubbish portion with a drizzle of oil, sauce ect over it served cold or if you are lucky luke warm. Deffinately not
a la carte standard. I think this is just a way to make the hotel sound fancy but is excuted extremley poorly and didnt work at all. I tried very a la carte and ended up not eating a thing. I'm allergic to egg and would ask for this to be left off what i would order, it would arrive covered in something that has egg in it so i could not eat it. I spent the whole holiday trying to get something to eat that was decent or hot. This was also the same with room service, they would repeat the order when you phoned it in and still delivery it cold and wrong. I spoke to both the holiday advisor, cheif concierge, food and beverage director but nothing improved. I was so hungry that i actually went and brought food from the walmart supermarket.

The personal concierge were totally useless, I asked 5 times for a umberella as it rained for 2 days, never got one and they could not even be bother to tell you that they were not giving you one. Would ask them for a golf car to pick you when it was raining but would never arrive either. They failed to book some of the trips to go out and never told you, leaving you waiting for the bus only to be told your names not on the list so you cant go. They were asked for the hammock but again they never supplied it. They were totally useless and served no point in being there as they didnt do the job when asked.

One other thing we cant get our head round is my partner bank card was cloned and tried to be used whilst staying at this hotel, it was kept in the very old safe ( at check in, you are give a barrel lock with a key in it, this is pushed into the safe to lock it ) We went to Cancun the day before it was attempted to be used on the hotel bus, the card was left in the safe as they just took money, i took my wallet with my cards in. The next day the card was attempted to be used and was blocked by the bank, despite them trying to contact the bank also. The address for the attempted transaction was Belize, this is next to Mexico. The card was not used during the holiday anywhere by us. We can not say its the hotel or the staff that had anythig to do with this for certain, They knew what time we would be out in Cancun and its something that just seems strange. The fraud dept at the bank seems to believe its to do with the hotel/ staff.
Just thought i would mention this just incase it is.

This hotel is over priced and poor quality, it does not delivery anything they advertise, its not romantic and it actually ruined the 30th birthday we were there to celebrate. The holiday was nothing but stressful and the best thing about it was leaving it. Paying what i paid to stay here was not worth the money, i actually was starving for the whole duration of the stay and this maid it even worse and frustrating that you just could not get anything hot or good to eat that.

This hotel is nothing what they advertise it as being and at most a 2 to 3 star hotel, Ive travelled alot all over the world and this is the worst i have stayed in.
Aviod and choose somewhere nicer.

Hotel paradise would be a more suitable name for this top notch 5 star gourmet property. Food is fabulous and along with the 1 mile plus beauty it is one not too miss. The beach is the only let down but that was due to the hurricane in 2004 I think. Staff were great fun but some of the Americans were a bit obnoxious towards them. Very spacious rooms with a jacuzzi but beware because of the tropical and damp climate asthmatics will suffer badly.

All in all though a great place to stay.

Room Tip: Ask for the 5400 block as this is the quietest part of the hotel.

My husband and I stayed here for our delayed honeymoon in March 2011. When we arrived, we upgraded to a second floor ocean view room. Definitely try to do this when you arrive. It had a hammock and the view was amazing. Upon entering the room, it did have a moldy wood smell but that can be taken care of by opening the windows. But considering this a five star resort, I can see how that could really bother some people. The food is amazing! I preferred the Italian, La Isla and the Asian restaurant. The fondue place takes too long. You do have to get up early to get a spot on either the beach or pool but it is worth it. Yes there are sandbags at the beach. That is my only complaint. I prefer to look out and swim in unending blue water and if this is you too - you will be disappointed. I know that they are there to protect the beach but there must be a better way. I did love the ocean pool which I wish I had discovered earlier in the trip. And you do have to watch out for those golf carts transporting staff and people at night. I don't understand why they don't have headlights. We did have a relaxing vacation and I would go back but I would first try to go somewhere that has a better beach.
