“Great Wedding, Great Food, Great Service - A Perfect Week”
Reviewed 3 May 2009

We spent a week at the El Dorado Royale for our wedding, with a group of 22.

We were upgraded to a Swim-up Casita and have nothing but fantastic things to report. The personal concierge service was amazing, the Casita room was outstanding with a king size bed and outdoor shower. Always clean rooms (the tub did have some scuff marks and water stains but that is to be expected in hotels with high volume. Can't expect them to replace the tubs every 6 months), and everything we requested was brought to us promptly. The staff will do almost anything to make your stay perfect! The service in the casita section was incredible. They came by our beach beds in the morning asking if we wanted a news paper, magazine, water, etc. They would deliver lunches in coolers if you were at the swim-up bar, ice cream came around at 3pm, it was fantastic!!!

We have read many reviews on this site and realized that the people who had nothing but complaints were the ones who spent their vacation looking for problems rather than enjoy the beautiful resort! One morning at breakfast, the table next to us had the chef come out with the restaurant manager to complain for almost 10 minutes about the toaster not toasting their bagels enough! Come on, that is beyond ridiculous... however, we happened to be walking through the restaurant around lunch and they had the toaster taken apart! So rest assured the resort does listen to your complaints, petty or not.

Premium booze was great, clean pools at perfect temperature, and always plenty of beach and pool side beds available.

The food was outstanding at every restaurant. I suspect a little over indulgence on sugar filled booze and food would and did cause some a little stomach upset after the first couple of days, but I had no problems. We tried all of the restaurants, and loved every one. I found the fish dishes to be my favourites, particularly the beach BBQ mahi-mahi!

The purpose of this trip was for our wedding, and despite a few scares in the months preceding the trip (Resort change, wedding coordinator change) everything went perfectly. The Presidential gazebo was a stunning location, with a great ceremony performed by the Minister. The after dinner reception was great, although we had only paid until 10:30pm and they shut it down and cut the music not a minute later (despite our offering of money to stick around for another hour). The party just moved over to Guacamaya's bar and carried on until almost 2:30am.

The service here was outstanding. Of course with a staff as large as El Dorado Royale has, there is bound to be a few bad apples, but over the 7 days we spent there only 2 or 3 employees seemed to be in a bad mood. Everyone else went above and beyond our expectations and always greeted and served us with a smile.

This was a fantastic trip, and of course with a group of 22 people over 7 days there were a few hiccups along the way, but none worthy of reporting here. A great trip, great resort, and highly recommended.

We went to the El Dorado Royale for our honeymoon on 6th April for two weeks. We really couldn't have asked for a better hotel. From the moment we got there we were treated like kings. We were welcomed with a glass of sparkling wine and then escorted to our room on a mini shuttle. We stayed in a standard room, which we found to be absolutely
fine. I loved the dark antique style furniture and the bed was really comfortable. The bathroom was very grand with large walk in shower that was almost like a separate room. The jacuzzi bath was great and very relaxing after a hard day at the beach. Our balcony overlooked the beautiful gardens and was very private.

We absolutely adored the food all restaurants were fantastic, but our favourites had to be Kampai, D'Italia and Jo Jo's (for the evening meals). The service was excellent and all the staff were very attentive. The food really was out of this world, it was all presented to a high standard and most importantly it was very tasty. For breakfast we found la Cocotal to have the best buffet, with almost everything you could want. For those who love a full english there were no beans, fried tomatos or black puddings. Saying that you can only ever get good full englishes in England. There was so much choice that this didn't matter, we often had smoked salmon, eggs cooked however we wanted and the breads and pastries were all delicious, there was even a chocolate fountain. For lunch you must definately try all the different offerings, the health bar had beautiful sandwiches and nutritious shakes, Jo Jo's had a great barbecue once a week and the burger place had great hot dogs and burgers.

We loved the beach, yes there are sandbags but these don't detract in anyway. The sands were soft and white and the sunbeds and shelters were excellent. I would definately recommend hiring a free snorkel, the fish are worth seeing. There are some lovely yellow and black striped ones. In the shallow parts there are some places you can just see all the fish without going under water. We often took some soft cheese from breakfast and fed the fish. This was fun, it attracts all the fish and they follow you round for a bit after.

The swimming pools were all lovely, we used to have one of the smaller ones to ourselves after 17.00. The only bad thing is at the main pools there are sometimes a few americans shouting their heads off getting drunk, but you can easily ignore this. The swim up bars are great and as you don't need to pay for drinks you can go to one anytime you like.

The choice of activities provided for at the hotel are brilliant. I would definately recommend the bike tour, we saw a crocodile and monkeys and a beautiful fresh water natural pool in the jungle. The gym is great, it looks out onto the sea. We really got into table tennis and there are couple of places you can play this. It was too hot to play real tennis though. There are many more activities offered but we didn't have chance to do all that many.

The evening entertainment was great at the main bar, and this was always followed by live bands. We had lots of fun in there especially watching some of the people dancing. A good place to try is the Martini lounge, very posh and there is a free pool table.

If you go on any trips book through the concierge people at the hotel direct. We flew with Thomas Cook and there trips were always a lot more expensive for exactly the same.

The El Dorado Royale is the best hotel we have ever been too. It made our honeymoon all the more perfect. All the staff are very friendly and everyone says hola. The maid was brilliant and made us different animals each day out of towels. The food was absolutely beautiful we really miss that. You could drink anything you wanted and the alcohol was all the top brands. The beach was great and the choice of pools fantastic. The only bad part was when we had to leave to come home. I would strongly recommend this hotel to anyone. For those who have rated this hotel as a one star you must be the ultimate snobs, as if this is a one star hotel I would love to see what an earth they could rate as five stars. Oh and the fact that there were no kids made this hotel all the more perfect. We would hope to come back in ten years time for our wedding anniversary.

Just a warning: My wife and I stayed here to celebrate our anniversary. Kinda hard to do when you're camped out in the bathroom with a 102 degree fever, cramps, chills and you know what else . Doesn't happen to everybody, but if you pay attention, you'll see a steady stream of sick guests at the hotel clinic. They charged us 10x what the meds would have cost and for the clinic visit saying that I must have gotten sick somewhere else! Refused to compensate or defray the cost of our vacation in any way. Service and experience was marginal anyway...thin veneer of hospitality and friendliness evaporated instantly and saw a much darker side of the staff that must become tired and jaded of dealing with guests.

I read about 100 reviews on EDR and I was a bit concerned about the pool and restaurant situation. NO NEED! My wife and I went in September for our honeymoon and we were 100% satisfied and are planning a trip back with friends in a few years. The location was great, only about 15-20 mins from the cancun airport. The check-in took only a few minutes but we had to wait for our room. Simple enough tho as the gave us a beeper and we went and had lunch at JoJo's which was our favorite for lunch. As far as restaurants go, i was very satisfied with everything but the asian was my personal favorite. The Fondu and the pizza and burger lunch place weren't that great in my opinion. The italian rest was very fancy almost too much for me but a nice change. The bars were very good, martini bar in main lobby was great. We were there in the off season so the pools were almost empty so we had a palapa bed every day, although one day we waited til about 12 to go to the pool and had to wait a while to get one, but other than that no problem. We spent every day but 1 at La Isla pool which was closest to our room. Except the fact that they had one pool closed that was a little closer for retiling ( it was the off season).

The only complaint that we had was the first night we had a first floor room and you could hear the jacuzzi above us whenever they turned it on and the plumbiong made a gurgling sound. We asked the front desk for a transfer and the moved all of our stuff the next day to a second floor room and there were no problems other than that. All the staff seemed very friendly and we tipped all the staff accordingly. That is the best thing to do though is to tip the bartenders and waiters, even though it's all inclusive you get super service for a few bucks a meal or bar trip. Also if you ask for extra strong drinks, they WILL accomidate.

I know this review kinda jumps around but it covers about everything. We will definately be going back here as soon as possible and probably around the same time of year. I didn't mention the beach cuz all we did was walk down it one time for about 5 mins as we preferred the pools. They weren't very scenic though I will say that. If you are on the fence and are planning on going anytime but Dec or Jan just do it, we were so glad we did.

Just got back from a fantastic fortnight's holiday at El Dorado and after all that beautful food more than a few pounds heavier!!.

Location;
Very handy for excursions to Xel Ha, Xcaret, Cancun, Playa Del Carmen etc and only 30 mins from Cancum airport (first drop off which is nice - First Choice)

Beach;
There are sand bags but didn't spoil it for us. There are some really nice areas; the sand is soft (careful of some rocks) and the water is beautiful - warm and clear - and there are plenty of fish for snorkelling. We recommend grabbing a bagel or two from the breakfast buffet and feeding the fish - they swam all around us and got really close (not for the squeamish!!). There are also some v quiet spots on the beach if you want that.

Pools;
They are all lovely - Las Fuentes is where we went and where most of the activities are but it was still relaxing and often quiet. You can use the Casita pools and many of these were extremely quiet (only 2 - 4 beds being used) so if you want complete quiet this could be an option, They all have swim up bars

Rooms;
We had an Ocean view room. It was at the back end of the hotel by the Fuentes pool. V nice and quiet spot/location. The room itself was nice and big - lovely bed and jacuzzi, double sink, large shower, aircon, fan and decent enough balcony. Downside was noise from neighbouring rooms and our bath gurgled when they emptied theirs! Mini bar goood and always restocked. Did one night of room service and watching films which was nice and lazy!

Food and drink;
Breakfast - Las Fuentes was our favourite. Great choice of buffet - great omelettes made to your liking, and really everything you could think of (both food and drink). The Cocotaol had the same buffet but Las Fuentes had a better ambience (slightly smaller and full glass windows overlooking the pool).

Lunch - you should really try a few for lunch. For snacks/informal lunch the Mexican (behind Fuentes) and La Cabana (pizza and Burgers) were great - loads of choice. Try the braised piglet at the Mexican and the pizzas, burgers and wraps were all nice at La Cabana ((NB ask for burger well done otherwise will be pink)
For a more formal lunch we loved Kampai (oriental) - the food here is outstanding, it really is! The Caliifornian Caesar salad and the Noodles are to die for. It is also really quiet here at lunchtime and is a different menu to the evening.
Jo Jo's is good for lunch too - especially of they have a BBQ where they cook fresh fiish (yummy). The menu at Jo Jo's is the same for both Lunch and dinner.
Finally we ate at La Isla twice for lunch and weren't that impressed either time. Location nice but food a bit bland.

Evening meals;
Kampai was hard to beat - everything we ordered was fantastic. Loads of choice - starters, sushi, soups, rice, noodles, meat dishes. The Teppanyaki duck, the Chicken Tonkatsu and the Lamb and Bok Choy were all amazing. We'd suggest ordering a choice of dishes and sharing. May have to wait for a table but well worth it!
Italian - this is a formal restaurant and was lovely. Recommend lobster lasagne, shrimps and fillet mignon. Desserts were fab too! Again may have to wait for a table but well worth it - we went 3/4 times and you can go and have a drink at the martini bar whilst you wait
La Fondue - tried this in the second week and really enjoyed it. Good fun sharing the plates and a nice romantic restaurant. We went again the same week. Recommend the seafood and the dark choc dessert!

Went to Cocotaol - food good but ambience not - too big and bright.
Went to La Isla - reverse of the above! Nice location but foood non eventful
Jo Jo's - OK - but as per lunch menu
Las Fuentes - didn't go as thought would be similar to Cocotaol

On another note - house red and white were both perfectly fine and diidn't need to bother with wine list.

Drink choice is great - we tried lots of different cocktails. Measures are large! The Guacamaya bar is good foor after your meal. The entertainment team are great and the shows OK. The live bands are mixed! The music (Lady in Red, Wonderful Tonight, Sweet Caroline) becomes a bit repetitive to say the least! But all in all good fun and great people watching!

Service and tips;
The service is fantastic. Really friendly, attentive staff. We tended to tip $1-2 at breakfast and lunch and $5 - 10 for evening meal and occassional dollar tips for drinks in the day/night. We recommend taking dollars - you can change any larger notes for singles at reception (we didn;t uses pesos at all)

Other stuff!;
The activites on offer are good fun. We did the bike tour, tennis, table tennis, tandem bikes, pool basketball, volleyball. water polo, potterry painting etc The K team work really hard and are v good.
The concierge weren't great - more interested in getting you to the 'frequent visitors club' than anything else - had a letter every day and about 3 phonecalls! Ignored them all!
We treated ourselves to a massage - was good but pricey for what you get compared to at home.
The grounds are absolutely beautiful and immaculate.
All in all if you want a very chilled, relaxing holiday, in beautiful surroundings with gorgeous food and drink, this is for you.

Booked with First Choice a year ago. Excellent outbound trip with Thomsonfly (terrible food), fast track immigration, lounge access, priority boarding. Problem with private transfer but they sorted us out with lots of apologies and a big smile. On arrival, golf cart waiting and champagne (in a plastic glass in case we dropped it) for the trip to the Casita section. Some people in the Casita reception moody not wanting listen about the resort even though it was their first visit. Folks your on holiday we all work hard for our breaks and don't want to be reminded we left managers like you at home no matter how long your flight!! (ours was 10 hours that'll be 6 longer than yours).
Room excellent, cleaned well, no problems throughout the stay (except for us locking ourselves out, a very helpful passing member of staff soon found a maid to let us in) outdoor shower was a nice touch and welcome with the hot sun, bathroom large, bed very comfortable and changed every day with towel art and turned down before we came back from dinner with chocolate mints on the pillow. Food great, room service always within 30 mins of order. Restaurants slow occasionally but without the kids with us why should we care, always another cocktail to try.
I'm a fussy eater to start with carrying a number of food allergies but found something in all eateries and staff willing to remove sauces just in case. Kampai for breakfast was very civilised and always plenty of room. Didn't have to book at any restaurants and we ate at 7.30 every night.

Loved the fact there were beds available around all pools at the Casitas and beach. I liked the beach, I'm a biologist so found the rock pools created by the sand washed away in the hurricane a bonus compared to pure white sand. So if you like looking at life this is a good beach. Pedro your a star (what a memory with so many people in resort) thank you for you wonderful service at lunch and dinner.

Would like to mention the minibar chap with orthodontic appliance very funny and gave us whatever we wanted what a character jokes every time.

I was surprised at how relaxing this place was given the size we have been to a number of all-ins (as I believe a holdiay should be no cooking, cleaning, thinking etc.) and this is the best by far we've stayed at including our wedding resort .

Only problem we had was Thomsonfly on return tried to shaft us at Cancun airport and accused us of telling lies and trying to get a premium flight upgrade by standing in the queue for premium!!! Mmmm great service four calls and two hours later they got us the seats we'd paid for, no apology just a sarcastic 'you happy now'.

Shame about the homebound journey booked a Karisma resort for Christmas with the teenagers so hopefully they have as good a time as we had.

If Thomsonfly try it on this time they be referred to ABTA and whoever else it may concern as their letter back from our concern was a waste of effort on all side but I shop around and was unwilling to pay an extra £2k for the same holiday.

P.S. I don't have flu!!

My husband and I visited the resort to celebrate our honeymoon. We could not have been more thrilled that we chose EDR. It was the time of our lives. We stayed in the jacuzzi jr. suite for the first 5 days then upgraded to the casita our last 2 nights. We wanted to treat our selves with the casita suite, which is absolutely beautiful with an ocean view, a private bed on the balcony, and an outside shower. However, the junior suite was also beautiful and way more affordable. The overall resort was squeaky clean. There was always people cleaning or watering or working very hard. The food was amazing! My husband and I ate at almost every restaurant and always left satisfied. La fuetes, Kompai, and the Italian restaurant were our favorites, just be aware that if you are not staying at the casitas, you can not make reservations so go early for dinner or don't complain if you have to wait awhile. My husband and I had to wait an hour for the Italian restaurant, but we just had some cocktails at the martini bar and enjoyed each others company and when they called us, it was completely worth the wait (must try the lobster lasagna and for dessert the chocolate surprise w/ baileys ice cream)
The only major complaint that I had were with the patrons that stayed @ EDR. There were a group of people that thought it was appropriate to go to a five star resort on spring break. They brought a cooler of beer at the pool, and one gentlemen actually brought an iPod radio, plugged it in , and was blasting the music. Needless to say, my husband and I found another pool to relax in. Also, there was a grumpy, old man by the beach, yelling at his wife about how the server is taking forever, and where is his beer. My husband and I just looked at each other and laughed, the bar was literally 10 steps away. If you don't want to wait for a beer then get it yourself...everything is free!!! Another instance, we were having a quite dinner and a party of 15 walks in and starts being very rude to the hostess because they had to wait for 20 minutes for a table. My husband and I are in the restaurant/ bar industry, and it took everything in our soul not to tell this large group that they should never go out to eat because they all were a mess! Also, I know that the resort is a non tipping resort, but the workers there work their butts off, and I feel that if you can afford to go to EDR then you can afford to tip a couple bucks here and there. We saw hardly anyone tip, and I thought it was awful. There was one older couple that came to the pool that we were at everyday, and they were bragging how they own BMWs and how rich they are, but they never tipped once and to me that is a shame.
