“too many extras”
Reviewed 19 September 2008

When we arrived we had a superior room which was fine and as we arrived after dinner time a cold plate was made up for us which was good. However there was no information given about the hotel, its facilities or the surrounding area or the extras we subsequently had to pay for:
The 20 euros for a security box (kept in reception), 6 euros for beach towels and on the hotel beach, 5 euros for the sun beds. The beach however not the best for swimming so we did end up around the pool area which is lovely. Although we too had to contend with flies and ants.
There is no flexiblity on half board, whereas on similar holidays we have been able to either have lunch or dinner.
If you go make sure you know about the 'system' for sitting outside for dinner. We went into the dining area on the third night asked a waiter if we could sit at the empty table he said yes and set the table for us. We then had to encounter abuse from the head waiter who asked us to leave the table as he had a queue of people waiting, we were not aware of this. We stayed as we had done nothing wrong. He came up to us twice after that and another waiter harassed us while we were eating.
We did see the general manager who did not apologise but eventually offered some compensation of which only half was subsequently given. We did not eat in the restaurant again in the evenings after that.
Luckily the tavernas down the road towards Kos were great and the people in them lovely and far more courteous than those in the hotel.
Kos town a bit of a treck but we did it once. We also hired a car for the day which was enough to see most of the main beaches etc. Therma is worth a visit, certainly helped my mozzy bites.
Would we go back to the hotel again? no I dont think so. It does not compare to any of the hotels we have stayed at in the last ten years in the Greek islands.

visited kos 2yrs ago and was looking forward to a return visit. Hotel is very nice (tho we had an issue with ants in the room) most of the staff very nice Animation team lovely, felt let down that there was never a Greek night on or Greek music played ! Food at breakfast very good (yogurt & honey to die for) food in the evening though plenty to choose from a little disapointing waiters running around you need eyes in back of your head. the night man's dog is a lovely welcome when you come back after an evening out like home from home (he loved his scooby snacks from the leeds bikers) We got bikes for 2 days GREAT never been on a bike for ditdot yrs. Booked trips ourselves and saved a fair bit of money, Zia for the sunset a must ! Turkey for a trip out also very good Konstakis 15 euro at the harbour, Mastihari also nice trip on the bus next stop paradise beach 4 euro from Kos town. Be warned watch your weight on the luggage coming home!!!

Stayed for two weeks did not rate the food lots of flys about.
The room was nice a superior room with whirlpool bath. Not different from the other rooms exept the bath. Staff pleasant especially reception. Some of the waiters were ignorant it seemed to be the ones outside. Hired a bicycle and went quite a distance around the area. I would not go to this hotel again you expect fresh eggs cooked on a morning and omelettes, Also cover the bread from the flies. The charge for the towels was quite good until we found out other hotels don`t charge.

We have just returned from a 2 week stay at the Platanista Hotel, Kos. We booked the holiday after reading the reviews on trip advisor and were not disappointed, we were very surprised to see two less than positive reviews that have been written since as we had an excellent experience there.

The hotel is spotlessly clean, the rooms are cleaned daily with fresh towels provided if you require them. The animation team are fantastic and made our stay there all the more fun! We can recommend the aqua gym with Marco which is absolutely hillarious. The evening entertainment was a little bit hit and miss but if it wasn't something we fancied then we would visit one of the local tavernas or go into Kos town. The food at the hotel is the best that we've ever had from a hotel abroad, it doesn't get repetitive and there is so much choice that you end up with plates piled high. The waiter at the hotel did appear a little rude at first but we soon got him smiling with a bit of banter and ended up having a table reserved every night for us as we were in a group of 6.

Every Thursday Marco from the animation does a buggy tour around the island, this tour is fantastic. We visited Paradise beach (although this was not the nicest of beaches we were only there for an hour so it was fine), we headed up the mountains to Zia which is beautiful, had some lunch there and then off to Therma on the coastal road which is a little scary and to the thermal springs. Had a great day in all and Marco was a fantastic tour guide. Zia is also worth a visit at night to get the best view of the sunset on the island, we booked a minibus to take us up there through a company called InterKos this cost 7 Euros per person and was well worth the visit.

Around the hotel there are tavernas along the coast on the way into Kos town. We visited the Europa bar on a number of occasions and the Spikado bar (think this is the name, it is close to Kos town just before the harbour) do nice lunches. To get into Kos town it is approximately a 25 minute walk, we did it twice but it was much easier to get the bus in which only took around 5 mins. Kos town was lively, lots of little shops selling jewellery and fake designer handbags. We found some nice bars - Global cafe is definitely worth a visit and if you want to venture into bar street then at Charisma bar you get two for one on cocktails and free shots every 5 mins!

We were in a group of 6 aged between 29 and 57 and there was something for everyone. Spartak at the pool bar is the nicest barman you could wish for, we are missing our 7 o'clock drinks with him and all the lovely people that we met already. I would definitely recommend the Platanista!

We spent 2 relaxing weeks here at the Platanista, which was a good location for relaxing but not too far away to go into KOS Town (45 minute walk or 10 min bus ride - 1 euro and busses every 15 minute last bus back 2am) The hotel was very clean, some rooms had sun on their balconies - we were very lucky in 483 as the sun was on most of the day until 6pm. Food was very nice and varied if you are vegetarian there was a choice of pasta dishes every night and plenty of salad. The pools were not over crowded and there was never a rush for sunbeds, the animation team were fantastic not pushing you to take part in activities but were nice and friendly (they even organise buggie trips around the Island, don't forget your license) If getting out and about is for you we can recommend the trip over to
- Bodrum for some shopping, which only cost 15 euro down at the KOS Harbour
- Kalymnos which was a bus trip to Mastihiri then a boat for the day which was 16 euro (Boat times are limited so 10.30am and back 4.00pm, we found there wasn't not much there though)
- Zia is a must see for the sun set and the small selection of shops and fabulous views. Many taverna's for a nice Greek meal. We booked this with one of the agents in KOS Town for 7 euro pick up from the hotel at 5.30pm and return 10.30pm.
The only grubble is we felt the lobby area in reception would have been better with air conditioning, the doors are always open but it was sooo sooo hot in the late 30's and early 40's.
A great place and we shall return in the future.

We have just returned from staying at the platanista for 2 weeks and can only say that this is the best hotel we have stayed in. There are only good points and I can honestly say there wasn't any bad points. The rooms are immaculate and the maids come in every day with fresh towels and throughly clean your room for you. The breakfasts are lovely especially the crepes and the waffles, there is plenty of choice here for everyone and the waitress and waiters can't do enough for you. The animacion team were brilliant and can't understand the previous review about one of the members we didn't see any of this and thought they did a excellent job entertaining the children. It is quite expensive for drinks in the hotel but down the road is a mini market and were you would pay 2.20 euros for a coke in the hotel it is only 80 cent here. I would certainly recommend this hotel to anyone and would definately go back again.

If you come to a Greek island exactly because an island
is sorrounded by the sea, then if you stay at the Platanista,
get a car!!! - the hotel is probably in the worst part of the island
as far as beaches/sea are concerned. On top of that, the best beaches are on the other side of Kos and this means 50km each
way or 2 hours per day by car/motobike. Is it worth??
Moreover, the beach of the hotel is unguarded, open to everybody,
along a busy road and not exaclty inviting.
If you come all the way down to Kos to spend your vacation around a pool, then go for it, because the hotel itself is nice, new
and has nice pool area.
Breakfast good with freshly made crepes while food at dinner is
just OK - a lot of choice though. A waiter have been not
just unfriendly but really rude to me (I sat without asking the first day), but generally speaking staff was kind.
