“Best meal in Cuba”
Reviewed 19 August 2014

We ate at the restaurant in Hotel Velasco one evening and were delighted with the standard of food and wine, the service and the great music.
We had the best steak, beautifully tender and cooked to our order (warm blue - which is easy to not do well).
The ambience is warm and intimate despite that the room is quite large. This hotel has been recently renovated with care and is delightful.
Easily the best meal we had in Cuba

The style of the hotel, the friendliness of the staff and the quality of the food made this our best stop on our Cuban vacation. You would not, necessarily, visit Matanzas for many other resons, buit this hotel, alone, made the trip worthwhile! From the colonial, open fronted entrance, leading out to the noisy main square, to the height of the ceilings in the rooms (we traded up to the superior room for CUC30) this hotel was a grand experience. Honestly, the best food we had on our trip and reasonably priced. The bar staff know how to mix their cocktails and the management were just very nice!

Room Tip: Trade up for the superior room, if you can. The smaller rooms are fine, for sleeping in, but have ve...

After arriving from Varadero airport, I was happy to see the clerk jack of all trade waiting for us. Being doorman, luggage carrier and barman, this Hernan offered us the best service. The booking through Cabanacan website worked good, even if done only 3 days ahead. Standard rooms were ok and clean, but no windows. The suite that we visited had windows but directly on street. Recently renovated, this Hotel offers all services and the barman kept us interested to the Cuban way of life until 2am, with good English speaking. We had a very good service from the lady in the morning to help out booking casas for next days. It cost us 35 CUC for taxi from the airport. The Hotel is directly in front of the park were local people and lovers have good time.

I have visited this hotel several times and every time I was there I had a cocktail that is a signature one. It costs 3CUC and it is really amazing and delicious.
If you are already in Matanzas, on the tour or passing by, please visit this hotel, and have a drink. Also, cross the park, and visit pharmaceutical museum. Staff is so nice, and willing to explain you everything.
I simply love Matanzas.
I love that city, its atmosphere, people, windows, church on the hill. Caves…everything simply everything

This is a very nice hotel − probably the best in Matanzas − on the lovely Plaza de la Libertad in the heart of the city. The hotel is small, and our 25-person group took all the rooms. By the luck of the draw, we got a suite (number 8) that faced on the Plaza. The sitting room and bedroom were quite large with high ceilings, and the bathroom was equipped with a substantial shower and plenty of hot water (not always a certainty in Cuba). The room was clean and the bed comfortable. The public spaces in the hotel are attractive, with a large atrium in the center for the restaurant and a nice interior terrace on the second floor. (Note that there is no elevator − only a long staircase to the second floor.)

There was no breakfast buffet, but you took whatever they were offering − in our case eggs, ham, juice, and two cups of coffee (which were quite decent). Dinner in the restaurant was surprisingly good. I had a tasty vegetarian main course and my wife had roast chicken. We had a reasonably good and fairly priced Spanish wine with dinner and a coconut dish for dessert.

Room Tip: Number 8, a suite overlooking the Plaza, is excellent.

A good stop-over if travelling from e.g. Vinales to Cienfuegos (altogether to much time in a car). It is like travelling back in time as soon as you pass the threshold. Colonial images. Beautifully restored, very good service and very good food. Large rooms, high ceilings and a nice, hotel-like bathroom. The receptionist is very informative and keen on providing information (in spite of a 12 hour day shift). Dinner was included in the price and it was very good. A glass of wine was also presented and again, very tasteful. Breakfast was poor, compared to the breakfast in the casas. A pity since they have all the ingredients to provide for the best. Nevertheless, the architecture was worth while. I would definitively go there again (and not park my car opposite of the road - the designated parking spot - for the starlings to use as a deposit for their waste during their evening break in the trees......).

Room Tip: Since the square is opposite and festivities can take place, a room on the back side is best. The su...

We have stayed at the Velasco several times and always enjoyed our stay. The staff, Jose, Jorge, Ingrid and all of the front desk staff are very friendly and helpful as is the manager, Miladys. The food in the restaurant is 5 star quality and is excellent. Ernesto Cruz, an amazing photographer and one of the Velasco staff, had a photo display in the lobby which was fantastic.

Room Tip: The suites overlooking the City square are excellent, but can be noisy because they overlook a major...
