“Simply awful! Bedbug infestation and very basic”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 19 May 2012

We recently stayed here as part of a tour on the slow boat and had (stupidly) pre-booked this hotel as we had been convinced it was nice and there were limited rooms in Pakbeng...big mistake!

When we arrived there were dead cockroaches in the room and it was unclean with lots of insects. There was what appeared to be a pink childs duvet on the bed which looked like it hadn't been washed in a while! There was no aircon or hot water. Although we supposedly had a river view room, you could barely see it and the window didn't open. The toilet looked like it had never been cleaned. We thought as its only one night we would grin and bare it, but worse was to come...

We woke up in the night to find we had been attacked by bedbugs, I even saw 2 of them...my girlfriend had over 70 bites! When we tried to inform staff there was noone to be found and we had to wait till morning. When we did try to tell staff they didn't speak any English and didn't seem to care when we showed them the bites.

When we looked at trip advisor (wish we had before hand) it seems the bedbugs have been around for years, and given the owners complete lack of customer service don't expect it to change any time soon. You would have to pay me a lot of money to stay there again!!

This hotel was by far the most basic i stayed in while in asia. I read some of the other reviews and all though i didnt have problems with bed bugs in my room they werent the cleanest rooms. The bathroom is super basic with the shower over the toilet and the door doesnt close properly. There is no airconditioning just a rickety old fan we turned off because it was so loud. I dont know what the rest of the hotels are like in pakbeng but i would check them out. However the views from the patio are awesome and the restaurant attached has great food. This hotel fits in with pakbeng standards but not western.

We stayed in this hotel one night, during our 2 days slow boat trip on the Mekong. While the hotel has excellent views on the Mekong, has convenient looking rooms and is located close to the pier, the reason to stay away is the bedbugs in the rooms!! You only discover that you have bites all over during the next day and than you have to suffer for days afterwards. Better pick another place on the same street!

This is the worst place we stayed on our backpacking trip. We never listen to solicitors or pre-purchase hotels without seeing the rooms first, but unfortunately decided to pre-book this place after a charistmatic character got on the slow boat in Huye Xi before the departure to Pakbeng and raved about the hostel. We considered that it may be a scam, but decided to book anyway because the boat was running 2 hours late and we didn't want to search for accomodations after dark for just one night. DON'T MAKE OUR MISTAKE and warn everyone on the boat if this character comes on to sell rooms!

Most of the rooms are infested with bed bugs. When you pull back the bed covers, you'll see that the sheets are completely covered with blood stains from previous bug bites. Disgusting! There are also only fans and no A/C at the exorbitant 100,000 kip per night. The Lonely Planet book says 125,000 kip! Someone definitely paid for that listing. Every room we stayed in in Laos at those prices comes with A/C, fresh towels, WiFi and sometimes breakfast. This place is a complete dump and should cost no more than 40,000 kip, if that, if you don't mind bedbugs.

We ended up not falling asleep, suspecting bedbugs would come out at night and they did. We packed up and went to sit outside until the morning. Then we had to fight with the owner/manager to get refunds for our two rooms. He protested until we threatened to go to the police. In the end, after an hour-long hassle, we got our money back.

Warning again: DO NOT STAY AT THIS PLACE. Do not believe the hype that there are no rooms. There are plenty and at half the price without bedbugs!

Room Tip: Don't stay here unless you want bedbugs!

We booked this ahead because we read horror stories about hassles in Pakbeng. Meanwhile we were greeted at the pier by VERY friendly touts that were not pushy at all to take us to much nicer hotels than Salika, for a better price. Our room had no A/C, no fan (broken), no toilet flush and only a trickle of water for a shower. Stiflingly hot, sleepless night.
Finding accommodation upon arrival in Pakbeng is very easy and recommended.

We stopped here for one night going down the river to Luang Prabang. The rooms were basic, no a/c, just a fan on the table between the beds. The door was a bit sticky and i had some problems with the lock. The staff were very welcoming and did their best to help. The best part about the hotel is the balcony area outside the rooms and sitting out there as the sun goes down watching the river traffic on the Mekong below. In flood season apparently the river comes right up to the hotel. Breakfast was basic but nice.

Like most we stayed here while traveling on the boat down the Mekong. For US$10 we got a fan (worked all night), clean enough bathroom and a comfortable bed. From our stay nothing stood out, but we didn't experience any problems.
