“Aweful welcome, overpriced and dirty”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 7 August 2014

As Cong is one of the most beautiful and lovely spots in Ireland we were shocked, to say the least,of the frosty welcome we received of the receptionist when we wanted to check into the Hostel. Not only was the guy very unfriendly and a bit shabby looking, further he made no effort at all to give us a room at first. After reconsidering his books he finally said he has a room for us. When it came to payment we were told no card payment accepted despite a sign behind him saying differently . We pointed out to him it was possible he replied this option is only for B&B guests cash only! We received our keys with no further information as we had no chance to ask him cause he turned around and choose to ignore us. Not only was it overpriced, breakfast the next morning was non existing. The same guy from previous night, remarked to guests breakfast is over at 9:30, not that he mentioned any of this to us but barking it out to people and cleaning the breakfast buffet at 9:10 was a bit much for me. What a disappointment after it has been recommended to us. Definitely do not recommended at all, for 10€ uro more we would have stood in the B&B around the corner, including a change of breakfast.

Positive: the room was clean, we had a double bed and a private bathroom. You could regulate the temperature of the shower and soap as well as a towel for the hands was provided. There was wifi in the room. The owners, a couple also running a B&B across the road, provided some useful information of the area, like hiking-trails with little maps and telephone numbers.
Negative: She was very short on the phone, after saying that there are vacancies, she hung up, no chance to ask more questions. When we arrived no one was in the office (it was nearly 9pm). We had to search for 10min until we found someone on the grounds. She was again very busy (but friendly), just the most important points, no time for more questions. We weren´t offered to just take the room without breakfast, so we thought it is always included. She mentioned that breakfast starts at 8:30 and was gone. We then had our dinner in the loveless furnitered living room and had to dry our dishes with dirty, smelly towels.
On our first morning we met her husband, the owner. He was unfriendly and didn´t act appropriate to someone running a hostel.
The breakfast buffet consisted of toast, jam, coffee and tea as well as juice. The coffee was ok, but the juice tasted awful, it might have been sirup lengthened with water. When I went to the buffet to get my third slice of bread I was told that the amount of slices is limited to 2-3 slices pp, for the bread has to last for 20 people. Meanwhile a woman wanting to take milk for the cornflakes she brought on her own, was denied to do so because it´s only to use for coffee and tea. At quarter to nine the breakfast guard (not the owner) started to remove the buffet. So breakfast time was only 45 minutes (!) which we weren´t told about. Some late-arrivals were only able to grab a cup of coffee, although the big suspenders were almost half full, as we realised while he poured it away. So they payed the full price for a very light breakfast... And again we had to dry our dishes with these dirty and smelly towels from our first day. But to be fair, the rest of the place seemed to be quiet clean.
To summarise: We really can´t recommend to stay at this place regarding what we experienced as described above. Visit the lovely town of Cong with it´s beautiful surrounding, but stay somewhere else. As this is one of the more expensive YHA´s you don´t have to pay very much more fore a B&B where you will defenitely get a better service.

All we needed, and a nice location next to Ashford Castle, close to the lough, a short walk. We had 9 family members sharing one bathroom 2 rooms. The social areas are a little bleak, not exactly welcoming! But that's a minor gripe, we didn't come to Cong to hang out in a hostel after all.

I camped in Cong Hostel/Campsite for a week and after being in several place i found it a good place to be, Its well maintained which is good when camping and caravanning for breakfast and dinner. I also found the owner open easy to talk to people and would recommend Cong Hostel.

We camped at this hostel and campsite in June 2014. Very well kept grounds, ample electricity and water points, welcoming staff. We found the kitchen, which is actually the hostel kitchen, really well stocked with multiple hobs and crockery (a few extra drying cloths wouldn't go astray). The toilets and showers were very clean. The site is in a great location because of its proximity to the quay -where you can enjoy a one hour cruise 365 days a year (at 11:15) or a longer boat trip (at 3pm)- and to the lovely village of Cong. We enjoyed the local cafes, pottered about the abbey, and would have loved more time to explore the nature trails in the woods. The campsite playground was a big hit with the children -it needs a little TLC to keep it looking good -standards of public playgrounds have soared in Ireland recently. (Lovely one in Cornamona which we discovered while out and about -complete with picnic tables). We'll be back! (By the way, the local Spar delivers to the hostel/campsite -how handy is that?!)

First of all, the photos in the following web page are incorrect and misleading (actually annoying) and this is the official page.
http://anoige.ie/Hostels/Our-Hostel-Guide/Cong-Hostel.htm
The photo showing the building of Cong Hostel is actually the B&B opposite to it, run by the same people.
The photo of the bedroom is most probably also from the B&B. The room we stayed in is nothing like it.
The breakfast room photo is also probably that of the B&B. The area in the hostel was nowhere as cozy as it is shown here.

E-mail response from this hostel was slow.

The dishwashing sponges were quite dirty (one was also very greasy), like they should have been thrown out a few months earlier.
One kitchen towel was dirty - it was at least dirty looking. It was perhaps washed and the stain didn't go away, but the problem is, we as users don't know which of the 2 is actually the case.
Another was torn and I wasn't sure, if these 2 towels were actually meant to be used for drying dishes or wiping the counter top, etc.

Rooms were smelling musty.

One of the people at the reception was unfriendly. Others were okay/friendly.

The atmosphere wasn't cozy at all. There were very few people staying there and so it wasn't possible to have a chat at the end of the day, which is one reason why people tend to go to hostels. This'll perhaps change as the season picks up, but at least somebody in management could have come around to have a chat.

Wi-Fi was available, but only in the laundry room and it was extremely slow. I'm wondering, if they'll change it when more people stay there. By the way, the laundry room was locked already at 9:40 pm, although it should have been open until 10 pm.

The hostel is about 2 km from the city center and that is where you'll find a grocery store, pubs, restaurants. This is an important aspect to consider, if you have no bicycle, or car, and are staying there for several days.

The room itself was comfortable, bed was good and I was able to sleep well. Showers in the room were good. It was possible to control the temperature of the water.

Nevertheless, all in all, I didn't enjoy the stay there. If you are only looking for a place to stay, and that too only for a night or two, and are traveling in a large group, it'll perhaps be fine, but if you are looking for more, like a good atmosphere, reasonably clean kitchen, etc., I wouldn't recommend it.

After a recent stay in Cong hostel I thought the hostel was in a great condition. It is great for big groups (ours was 50). It has a big well equipped kitchen perfect for self catering. It is clean and very well kept and situated in a nice peaceful area.
