“Downton Abbey”
Reviewed 13 July 2014

Stayed 2 nights in grand style. We were "piped" in with and Irish bagpipe. Members of the staff were in front, and greeted us as though we were visiting Downton Abbey. Rooms were good size, but did not have a/c. Normally not an issue. The grounds and gardens provided excellent areas to walk and enjoy the lake views. The formal restaurant, George V, was excellent, and the service was as expected. Food was all well prepared, and professional served. If you want a royal experience, this is the place.

We recently returned from a 10 day driving tour of Ireland and only stayed one night at the Ashford Castle. We had a wonderful time, the grounds were beautiful, the castle was amazing, the food and service outstanding with friendly staff that delivered exceptional customer service.

Our room was absolutely outstanding, well thought out and appointed with everything / anything we could possible want at our fingertips. At dinner we were surprised with a special dessert to honor the 60th birthday and 40th wedding anniversary we were celebrating on this trip, along with a fabulous meal and superior service!

The next morning, we took the ferry tour and it was well worth the time and cost, as we learned a lot about the history of the area and the castle. It also provided us amazing views of the Castle and grounds that we would not have had the ability to experience without riding the ferry. We then walked into Cong via the well cared for wooded path from the Castle to the quaint little town, it was one of our best days in Ireland.

Our next trip to Ireland, we will use Ashford Castle as our base! If you are looking for an exceptional experience, I highly recommend staying at the Ashford Castle, as it is a truly amazing place with extraordinary staff that truly love what they do!

Dear Peggie G,

Firstly I would like to extend my thanks for choosing to spend such a milestone with us at Ashford Castle. I am delighted to read that your celebrations were so well met by the service and surprises the castle staff were able to offer you.

It is great that you had the opportunity to fully explore the grounds and neighbouring village, and to soak up all that history on one of Pat’s fabulous boat cruises. I would like to wish you a very happy birthday and anniversary, and I would hope to welcome you back for many more celebrations in the future.

Many thanks

It is quite an impressive sight as you drive through the gates, up the private road, and first spot Ashford Castle. As the castle sits on the bank of a river, you approach the castle by driving over a bridge, almost as if you are crossing a moat. You are greeted by an impressively uniformed and top-hatted doorman who leads you to the reception room where you are warmly greeted and attended to by the castle staff.
As you are walked to your accommodations by a staff person, you will see the magnificent back lawn of the castle that overlooks a lake. In addition, you'll see the tea room, the bar, and the George V dining room, each with its own unique and highly ornate decor.
I doubt that there are no two identical sleeping quarters as our group of three each had our own room and each was different in setup and decor, but each keeping the castle ambience.
The food at the Dungeon restaurant was good, not extraordinary, but dinner in the George V dining room was very good, along with the attentive service.
There are lots of activities at the castle, but be sure to do the Falconry School activity. It is unique, educational, and fun.
Even with all of the positive comments above, the best part of your castle stay will be the hospitality you receive from the staff. They are all there to make your stay a very memorable experience.(special thanks to Geraldine of the reception/concierge staff)
This is quite a "hotel"!!!

The first sight of the castle as you round the bend, takes your breath away! It's a fantastic complex of castle construction. The room was large and well appointed. Sounds of the river tumbling through the gates outside. Dining in the Castle proper was elegant and well attended. The Cullen down the lane was also excellent with Bea Tollman's fantastic recipes! The most amazing experience at this castle is the friendliness of the staff. You could not pass a single person without a sincere and gracious "hello" and some of them knew you by name (even with only a two-day stay!). Although the falconry was one of the highlights of our trip, I felt that the attitude and sincerity of the staff defined Ireland for me this time. Don't miss it!

how lucky were we to be upgraded to the Presidential Suite and it was just stunning, beautifully decorated living room which had a complimentary carafe of sherry, upstairs a fabulous bedroom which had a television inside the four poster bed (perfect for watching The Quite Man), a luxurious bathroom and a seperate shower room, this room is the reason for 4 stars not 5 as it did not have hot water on our departure morning. Dinner in the dungeon was delicious, the staff were simply wonderful just full of Irish hospitality (as were all the staff in this beautiful castle) they kindly delivered the reminder of our wine to our room. Our room was 204 right beside the lift my brothers installed. Breakfast was totally delicious although the service could be quicker we did have to wait a while until our waitress came to take our breakfast orders. Anyone not staying at the hotel can go for breakfast for 25 euros which is total value for money. The grounds are extensive and beautifully manicured perfect for taking a stroll around. Do not miss an opportunity to stay at this enchanting castle it is just magical.

We so enjoyed our three nights at Ashford Castle. Yes, there are a few glitches - doorknob falling off (in a beautifully renovated jr suite), bumbles in the restaurant - no wonder, given the staff works all three meals, laundry not loaded in the car when we left.

And yet, we have rarely met such lovely people, from management to bell men. Really helpful, very friendly and professional.

The castle itself is pretty magical and the gardens are magnificent. The views of the lake, stellar. Live music every night. Cong, a short walk away, with its Abbey to explore. All of it, a photographer's dream.

The best, and most unexpected, outing though, was our afternoon boat ride with Pat, the captain and owner of Corrib Cruises. The ride itself was wonderful - incredible photos, a charming 84 year old musician/singer, very comfortable. The happy surprise was the island of Inishgaioll - the history and ruins there are incredible. Pat is so knowledgable and full of stories about the island, it's history and the history of Ashford Castle, as well. A wonderful afternoon! Not to be missed.

So go - enjoy the castle, the delicious food and beautiful surroundings and the magic of this part of County Mayo. I know we'll return.
