Oriel Country Hotel & Spa
Ranked #2 of 2 Hotels in St. Asaph
Reviewed 19 January 2012

We booked this hotel for 4 nights between Christmas & New Year.

I had several conversations over email with the manager, Justin, who always seemed happy to help and give advice in any way possible. We booked a Deluxe Room for 3 nights, and the Indonesian Suite on our final night (following recommendation from Justin).

On arrival at the hotel, we were welcomed by the reception staff who confirmed our booking and showed us to our room (114, I think). It was extremely spacious, with very high ceilings, and perfectly clean. The sleep was good as the hotel was quiet and our room seemed to be towards the back of the hotel.

We also made use of the Spa Facilities, which were once again of high quality. The swimming pool was lovely (and quiet during our stay), along with the sauna and fitness facilities. (All of this is included in the price of the room!)

We had 1 evening meal at the hotel, which was really nice, but somewhat expensive. It was a high quality meal, and you could tell. The waitresses were extremely helpful and polite. We also spent time in the bar/conservatory area which was very homely and comfortable.

Breakfast was quite possibly the best I have ever experienced. The cooked breakfast was made to order (with a wide variety as you would expect), but it was the continental part of the breakfast which was exceptional. There were facilities to make your own toast, around 12-15 different types of cereal, pastries, muffins, fruit, yoghurts, juice (several varieties)... to name just a few!

The staff were extremely helpful, and following our 3rd night when were moving to the Indonesian Suite, we were told by the receptionist to put all of our luggage on the bed and whilst we were out for the day, they would move all of our luggage to our new room. I was sceptical, but this was done without a hitch.

The Indonesian Suite was very different to our first room with lower ceilings, but it was decorated extremely well. The facilities in the room were amazing, with 2 TV's and a Jacuzzi bath. It also had a compact en-suite with a large shower.

The only criticism I would have to make, is the lack of DVD player in the rooms.

The hotel is in a great location on the outskirts of a village (St Asaph), with Chester, Manchester & Liverpool all within easy reach/access in under 60 mins.

We were made extremely welcome at The Oriel, and nothing was ever too much for the helpful and friendly staff. It could only be described as the perfect stay!

Room Tip: 114 (I think) was towards the back of the hotel. Quiet with no noise from dining room or road. Large...

Spent another good stay at this place which is just off the A55 Expressway. Rooms are spacious and clean with very helpful staff throughout.

Food is excellent and very reasonably priced, breakfast has a great selection to choose from which is always a bonus.

There is a well equipped gym with a swimming pool which does get busy around 1600 hours.

Room Tip: The traffic along with the floodlights can be troublesome so you may wish to ask for a room on the s...

We stayed one night, on December 15th, and arrived a little concerned after reading some reviews. It was dark outside but the entrance glowed with a beautifully decorated Christmas tree, warmth rushed out at us as we opened the door, and we were received with a smile and quickly found our large, clean and comfortably appointed room - 106. Yes there were twists and turns to get there but this is an older, country house. We didn't notice any unpleasant smells en route! The toiletries in the room added a gorgeous scent as we prepared for dinner. We thoroughly enjoyed well served lamb and salmon and after a tiring day fell into bed early not disturbed by fellow guests enjoying a Casino night. Breakfast choices were extensive. We had awoken to snow adding to the Christmas atmosphere and were glad to have booked treatments in the spa. Alas we were disappointed. A crash on the A55 had closed the road; staff were stranded. Apologies were sincere. Our suggestion to come back in the New Year was welcomed and we were offered a complimentary lunch to add to our enjoyment then. After using the pool and sauna we managed a parting coffee and mince pie and accepted further apologies before we ventured into the picture postcard, Welsh, winter countryside. Can't wait to return for our spa day.

my husband and myself have recently returned from this wonderful part of the country having spent that time at the oriel hotel. if you're going for one night its great value for money with wonderful staff, however, having spent 3 nights there the cracks had well and truly shown themselves.... the exterior of the hotel was impressive without being pretentious, the staff were warm and welcoming, the conservatory comfortable and homely... then there was the tiny finishing touches that the management clearly didnt think were important but as a guest we were so disappointed with.... you enter the hall with the wonderful christmas tree and all you can think is ''it stinks'', the smell of damp from the front door to our room was horrendous. the decor is lovely but starting to get very shabby, paint peeling on walls, gloss in dire need of a wash if not another lick of paint, stains on the carpet, toilets not flushing... why???? this hotel could be truely wonderful if someone gave it a bloody good clean... they need to give some of the attention to detail to the hotel as they have to their wonderful gastro pub 'The Bridge'... please please get the chef from The Bridge to share their ideas and enthusiasm for great food at the hotel, the menus couldnt of been more different if you had tried.

Room Tip: we were in room 110 and the size and facilities were great, view not fantastic and you do get early...

This hotel is excellent in every respect, The management have thought or the guests every need before the guest has thought if it. Every proceedure is simplified to the the ultimate degree.Tthis all happens because the management are around all of the time , especially at breakfast where they ensure eveone is totaly satisfied. Probalby the best spa facilities that we encounter in a hotel. Food good, sevice good, everything good. Have visited many times and will continue to do so.

The best welcome in the area. More relaxed than the Quay and better in other respects than all the other hotels in the area. The manager, Justin, could not have been more helpful. Very good breakfast service - better than The Quay. Will be staying for a 3rd time very soon. Highly recommended.

My wife and I visited the hotel restaurant for Sunday lunch only, we did not use any of the other facilities on offer . the food the service and the whole experience were excellent from start to finish, if the rest of the facilities are anything like as good I would love to stay & enjoy them.
Thanks to all the staff.
