On the plus side, this hotel is very central, inexpensive (we paid €73 for a balcony room, without breakfast) and it has baths - a good long soak was just what was needed after a day's cycling. However, there was a smell of mould/damp about the place, possibly resulting from the leaking flat roof over the dining room that was in the process of being repaired. As others have said, the bathrooms are dated and "tired", as is much of the decor. I don't think you'd want to stay here for any longer than a night or two at most.

Room Tip: It's not worth paying extra for the balcony rooms overlooking the front of the hotel.

Good location, not noisy. Rooms dated but clean, good beds and bedding. Decor tired. Nice staff. Lots of mosquitos if windows left open! No tea/coffee mking facilities. We paid 80e per night, so not bad value, would use again if on a budget.

Having booked this hotel last year we had great hopes. I should have read the French reviews as these seem more on the mark as does the last English review.
It's true there are not many hotels in this area but this one is way below the three star rating it claims to be.
Our room No. 34 was at the back of the hotel overlooking the car park and local housing. The balcony was not big enough for a table and chairs and so we just had two grey plastic chairs ( I think they were white a very, very long time ago!) Rooms at the front have larger balconies and better chairs, although they try to charge the same price! The carpet was frayed and thread bare in places and the view from the loo (dirty pipe work as seen in the photo) was quite awful. The shower head would not stay in the same place and the whole bathroom needs an update.
There is a fridge that does not work and the old kitchen unit is kept locked and made to look like a luggage rack, not convincing or useful as it is at sink height.
Very disappointed and would not recommend this very overpriced hotel £125.00 a night no breakfast, half a balcony and paper thin walls! Avoid!

I'm in two minds concerning the Hotel Palmyre. There are several positive aspects of it. Firstly, it is very central to the main facilities in the town. There are plenty of restaurants nearby and it is very close to the shops and the zoo. At night it was quiet, as the hotel is set back from the main road. The hotel windows all had shutters to cut out the noise and block out the heat. In addition, the hotel does have a private secure car park.

However, overall I found the hotel only satisfactory. The whole place seemed to be totally lacking in any atmosphere. The rooms were relatively small and the furnishings desperately needed to be replaced and modernised. The corridors leading to the rooms were very dark, and the automatic light took far too long to come on.

I am unable to make comment on the service and the friendliness of the staff, as we only encountered the receptionist who booked us in. The breakfast was buffet style and this included the usual fare. However, it has to be said; the 'fresh fruit salad' seemed to be far from fresh and the cooked breakfast of sausage and scrambled egg, which my husband chose, was not enjoyable, as it was cold. I would really have liked a glass of water, as I don't drink coffee or tea, but there were no staff to be seen in the dining room to ask for one.

The bill for the one night was 127 euros for the room, parking and 2 breakfasts. Even taking into account the positive aspects of the hotel, I didn't consider this a reasonable tariff for a hotel which barely deserved the 3 stars it has been awarded.

I spent two nights at this hotel this week. I cannot fault the friendly reception staff who made the effort to speak English when I struggle with more than basic French. I really should learn more!

The room was comfortable and the pillows whilst at first glance appeared to look uncomfortable actually proved me wrong as they were very comfortable.

The bathroom could have done with a makeover but it was perfectly serviceable.

A bottle of mineral water on the table was a welcome sight on arrival.

Only downside in the plumbing makes a racket.

La Palmyre and the surrounding area is beautiful. Very clean. Puts us to shame. I would highly recommend this area. Only 1 hour from La Rochelle airport and with Ryanair flights, it makes it very affordable.

Room Tip: I was on the ground floor and this didn't present a problem. Shaded from the sun though so if yo...

We ate in the restaurant as a couple and with the family (we did not stay in the hotel) the service was good, not all the staff speak English, the food was very reasonable, we could have as many starters and as many desserts as we wanted, excellent selection, for my main I choose a rump steak medium rare, it was so tough it was impossible to eat, it was changed and a new meal was provided without any fuss, have yet to have a decent steak in France!! would certainly eat there again.
