“A glorious find!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 27 December 2011

After a long day of driving Cathar country, we were blessed to stay at this fantastic hotel. It is gloriously situated and so peaceful. On arrival we sat on the hotel terrace just soaking in the beatiful surroundings with a pre-dinner drink--redefining relaxing. We had a triple room, comprised of two large rooms, good bathroom and two terraces. We took advantage of their dinner on a half board plan which was excellent. Very delicious pintade. Totally homemade and excellent value. Breakfast was also excellent. Both were served outside with glorious views of the town and the countryside. Service was very friendly. We were sad to have only booked one night. I would highly recommend this little gem of a hotel.

Tucked away in the heart of Cathar Country this was the perfect place for a short break. We had four days with no TV, no internet, no newspapers and came home thoroughly refreshed.
Our room was in a converted barn just across the tiny street from reception - rough white painted walls and simple but spotless furnishings. We had the same delightful view from the terrace where most meals were served (cosy dining room when it was too cold one night.) Excellent regional food - half board extremely good value as others have said with full bottle of very drinkable local wine included between two. Lovely sunny swimming pool for cooling off at the end of the day.
Endless walks and driving tours nearby - do go up to the source of the Sals river (salt spring). Recommend the Sunflower guide for walks (their route to get to Carcassonne is spectacular.) For a bit of local colour Kate Mosse's 'Sepulchre' made great bedtime reading.

Sougraigne has a population of 90, yet sustains a marvelous B&B with an outstanding dinner service. The owners are extremely nice. When my bike broke down 10k away, they came to pick me up, without complaint. The room was quaint, and larger than most we've had in France (though that still means small). The dinner prepared was superb, and they were able to accommodate my wife's pescatarian needs without trouble. A reasonably good house wine is included with the meal (a nice gesture, since they could squeeze tourists here without much trouble). They even offered to pack nus a picnic the following day, for our next bike ride. We went in October--a bit cool to sit outside--but the patio looks marvelous for warmer months. Like many Logis places, it might be challenging for non-French speakers to communicate. (FYI: no internet access here, except through the owners)

Auberge Ecluse au Soleile is set in Sougraine, a tiny village in the Aude in the Cathar hills. It is a in a delightful setting and the auberge itself is charming, run by a very pleasant couple. Be warned, however, that Sougraine consists only of a small number of residential houses and that there is nothing there other than the auberge, beautiful views of the Salz valley from the restaurant and an old church. I would say it was tailored for those who have had an active day exploring and just come back for a quick dip in the pool before dinner as there is nothing to do there in the evening except dine. There is lots of walking you can do in the surrounding area and some of the drives over the mountains are spectacular. Our room in the auberge was set up in the eaves, was consequently very dark but was comfortable with a small roof terrace – although you had to stand and stretch to see over the roof up to the views. Good beds, bed linen and towels with a very nice bathroom. In fact, it was really a sort of suite (without the sitting room) in that there was another adjoining twin bedded room which shared the bathroom. There was no air conditioning as it is a rustic auberge. The hotel had a tennis court, boules pitch and a pleasant swimming pool which was bracing, despite the 34 degrees temperature. You can get drinks from the auberge and it provided an excellent dinner menu for 25 euros (which you preferably need to book in advance because they are popular) based on good local ingredients and excellent cooking by Madame. The hotel is popular with touring French, cyclists and walkers. Although I've said I would recommend it to a friend, it would only be one who was looking for a very quiet location.

A rambling Logis in an interesting old hillside village with simple but very adequate accommodation, polite hosts, and lots to do for outdoor types. Set four course dinners are very flavoursome, carefully cooked and presented and served with good local wines. Remarkable value for money. We loved it, and the surrounding area.
