“What a gem of a find !”
Reviewed 4 August 2013

We stumbled across this delightful place whilst walking around the hill top town of Ourem. The owner invited us in to have some traditional Portugese food and suggested a homemade soup, fish salad and some local wine as we had said we eat at night back at our hotel. We are so glad we went in ! The Taberna is small, almost a cave dwelling but spotlessly clean. The food was wonderful and beautifully presented. The owner spoke to us, a french group and a Spanish couple all in our own language and switched easily. We would have gone back many times had we have been staying closer.

“Traditional little restaurant with welcoming hostess/cook/waitress”
Reviewed 13 July 2013

This is a very small traditional restaurant, where the owner (a former English and French teacher) does everything herself. Since we did not know what to choose, the owner served some of everything she had prepared, all traditional Portuguese dishes, including deserts and home made aperitif, wine and digestif.
Meanwhile, we talked with the owner about her life, life in Portugal, the economy, the area, ....

We spent a wonderful evening in this little restaurant.

“I would fly back from New York just to have another culinary experience here!”
Reviewed 25 June 2013

Wow, did I love this place! From the outside it did not look like much, but inside holds one of the most memorable food experiences you will ever have. The restaurant is run at night solely by the owner who does all the cooking and changes the menu daily. Not only is the food delicious and gives off the feel of being homecooked, but is presented with such sophistication as you would see in a five star restaurant.

The prices are extremely reasonable and the homemade wine is so addictive that I suggest staying at the nearby Pousada.

We were there for almost 4 hours drinking and eating while talking with the owner. She is the sweetest woman and was a real pleasure to talk to.

When we left, we were all a bit sad. We know we would not have another experience like this and we did not want the night to end.

Also, the homemade ginjinha was to die for.

“Unique experience”
Reviewed 29 March 2013

A very old, very small taverna not far from the Castle and less than a 5 minute walk from the Pousada de Ourem. The owner/chef/waitress/story teller is delightful. All the food we were served, including the wine, was local and excellent. She lit a fire for us and shared her knowledge of the area. All this for a very reasonable price. Drop by - it will be a highlight of your vacation as it was ours.
