“Great place to spend a few days”
Reviewed 5 April 2010

I spent 3 fantastic days with friends (Easter weekend). The service is very good. The decoration of many houses is very well achieved. Located in a rural area, but very close to everything. The breakfasts are fantastic. I recommend a stay in this house

A perfect place for a weekend in family (or with friends), far from the rush of cities and ideal to relax after a week of work, even if living abroad since it is not very far from Lisbon's airport. The Quinta is super charming and the owners’ hospitality is highly recommended. We arrived late Friday and were welcomed by the owner (and Tico a very friendly dog) who very nicely, showed us our apartment, mirroring the Portuguese traditional decoration and with a very nice fireplace which invited for a good reading, chat, and playing cards…super cozy! The availability and care of the owners was excellent. The peaceful silence allowed for a great rest and to fully recover energy…walking around and see the beauty of the surroundings made the rest together with the restaurants recommended. Hard to leave such peaceful intimate place…

We stayed here on a trip that started in Porto and finished in the Algarve, and randomly picked the location when booking. Can't express how much you must visit Tomar.

Now to the "bizarre"... we turned up about 12 noon, couldnt find anyone to "check in" and it was obvious they didnt expect us that early. Our room wasnt ready, but we got to choose one. It was last week Sept/Oct and we were the only guests apart from one other that night. It was a good comfortable bed, and good breakfast. We never saw anyone until breakfast time. Hospitality was great, and forthcoming at breakfast, it was just a bizarre arrival, afternoon and evening, not seeing anyone.

The Quinta is a mix of rennovated but tired in places, and being old, is a little "dusty and musty" in places. My husband went for a run in the morning and was accompanied the whole way by "Tico" the dog. Which amused everyone

It was a monday night, couldnt find the restaurant recommended to us, so ended up driving back to Tomar, most things were shut, out of season on a monday night.

As it was a quite period, we were offered the largest self-catering accommodation on the estate, the Alambique cottage. A period spacious cottage comprised of a large living area with a kitchenette and a fireplace and a double bedroom (there was also a twin which we didn’t use) with a very comfortable bed. As the weather was still unstable, it was very comforting to come back to make fire in the fireplace, with wood thoughtfully replenished daily. Some nice touches in addition, like a DVD/CD player, and even some CDs. Bring your own DVDs, though.

The cottage had wonderful views across the valley, but it was not as secluded as we judged from the photos on the website. And the whole state is in fact quite close to the (admittedly quiet) road and is on the outskirts of Ouarem. So this was not quite the rural hideaway we thought it will be. All the same, it will make a lovely family stay, with or without children.

One advise: while the gentleman who runs the estate is very knowledgeable on where to eat out, for advise on walking routes talk to his wife. He could not recommend any walking routes, only for his wife to show us a whole book of trails in the region right at the end of our stay, which was a little annoying.

  • Liked — Log-fire in the evenings
  • Disliked — Lack of seclusion

We spent 2 peaceful evenings and nights at this guest house just a few kilometres outside Ourem on the road to Tomar. Set on farmland, surrounded by other small rural alotments, we were able to ramble on the gently hilly property, swim in the pristine pool, sip wine (ours) on the balcony near sunset, and port (theirs) after dinner. Large rooms, large ensuites (but need better airflow), quietness. Pleasant chat with fellow travellers and your hostess (in her home for decades) at the dinner table and at breakfast. Easy drive to Tomar and to Fatima. Maybe not the view from Ourem castle, but a great place for a short stay.
